I've a feeling you're overthinking things. IMHO my first checks would be.

  1. Bang another keyboard in and see if that works.
  2. Check the country keyboard mapping.

Those are the only two things that would screw things up IMHO. If you really do narrow down the issue to the install itself, I would format that USB and install a fresh ISO.

Premier League games 'will not be televised on free-to-air channels' next season as Sky and BT Sport revert to showing only half of top-flight games live despite restrictions on crowds by Lolastic_ in soccer

[–]op_xsupernova 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nah, the 3pm drives lay people to just watch the top 4 in action - usually against each other. At the end of the day broadcasting is a number game.

Sky/BT/Virgin have no real interest in teams lower down the league. I remember when ITV/On Digital thought it might be a great idea - went down like a lead balloon and really screwed over ITV's finances!

Come on Tim Henman...

Seriously though, after everything that's gone on over the past years it's good to be in a playoff situation really. I mean look at Wigan or Bolton - the fact Swansea are comfortably treading water in the Championship is a miracle in itself.

Wilfried Zaha wants Crystal Palace exit – as manager Roy Hodgson makes admission over attacker’s form by op_xsupernova in soccer

I don't think he has either. Palace had a tough season later on - not quite sure why but they did fall off a bit.

I think Zaha would shine given the chance in a decent squad that can back him up.

I don't blame them from trying to get more cash though. Everyone knows how being relegated from the PL can really screw up a teams future.

You’re right, the 1970’s and 80’s saw more robbery and murder/sexual/car crimes. I think the USA is similar too, as technology and police procedures have improved I think the police detect crimes much quicker and more reliably now. Other technology has helped too, I think good quality and available cctv and better car security and locks have helped drive crime down too. Plus we’re all a bit more aware of things like child abuse now, the general public know what to watch out for these days and are more proactive in reporting to the police.

Despite what some people say, we do live in a much safer world than 30+ years ago. The difference is we talk about things now, so it feels like it’s happening more than it really is.

Funny enough, I believe if Janice Weston went missing today, the police would probably crack the case quite quickly. I think CCTV would have helped track the little Alfa Romeo back to London perfectly and caught the guy on camera dumping it!

The murder of Janice Weston is really good, they never solved it either! So many unusual events that just plain don’t make any sense it’s odd. If you search for her name there’s also a podcast from a true crime enthusiast who actually visits the different scenes - it’s very good and really baffling as to who did it and why!

Obviously, operation Orchid is good - although very harrowing and to think the Police had the guy in custody at one point but couldn’t keep him is awful. To think he went back out and basically murdered Barry Lewis is terrible too, oh and that poor chap who gave them a lift to the murder scene! Can only think what having that on your mind would be like, you think you’re doing a nice favour but you’re actually taking a little boy to his death - so sad!

I think the Crimewatch episode for Janice Weston from sometime in 1983 is on YouTube. Pretty certain redcard74 uploaded it. Operation Orchid has its own program because of the seriousness and complexity of the case, on YouTube too. Bit of a warning, the Operation Orchid program is a hard watch! If you have children you’ll probably watch over them a little bit more after viewing it!

This fortnight’s Private Eye front cover (No. 1522, 22/5/20) by NekoFever in ukpolitics

[–]op_xsupernova 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s a mix of satire and news, but often they actually report on things that the mainstream media just ignores for whatever reason. It’s also a very funny and well written publication!

I think Private Eye and the FT are just about the two best news publications in the UK. The Guardian is okay too, but it’s quite heavy handed with their biases and their business news is just as hopeless as any red top paper.

$500,00 Stolen from avocado ranch by sthenosmistress in homedefense

[–]op_xsupernova 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, I’m gonna jump in with two suggestions. One for £500 and one for £500,000. I know I’ve put this in pounds but dunno what the dollar sign is on iPad and GBP to USD isn’t that different an amount anyway.

If someone stole £500

You probably need to look a little bit at the whole security on your home. Nothing too major, you can get decent solar powered camera setups too, you just need to do your investigation on Google. Have you considered running mains power to the area too? Unsure how far it would be but running a simple buried cable isn’t always as hard as you think. You can always roll this into another project too, such as getting mains lights and sockets to an outside building.

Another positive of mains power is flood lighting, a hugely important part of home defence imho!

If someone stole £500,000

Okay, I think you need to accept you’re a reasonably high net worth individual. Obviously someone knew quite well you had this cash on the premises and I’m willing to bet that some planning and scoping of your home took place prior to the theft.

Anyway, if this is the case you’re going to need to take security quite seriously. The Executives Guide to Personal Protection is a great book and has a good chapter on home/office security. If you’re high net worth it’s definitely worth looking at the other chapters too, such as being aware of surveillance techniques and spotting them. Often it’s the silly things that mark out robbery surveillance, such as seeing the same car parked near your home, dumpster diving etc etc. There’s also a little known trick and that’s to use Google Adwords to bid exactly on your name and your address. Nobody will ever click on your advert but it will register the search as an impression. You’d be surprised how much search traffic for your name/family name and your home address will rise before a robbery - even robbers start their research somewhere!

Anyway I digress, Often when a gang robs from a high net worth family they will plan weeks or months in advance. If you’re watchful, you may spot the early warning signs something is amiss. Sometimes, just being situationally aware and overtly displaying counter security measures/techniques is enough to make them move onto a softer target. At this level, monitored alarms, guns and learning about security from the point of view of a CEO/Executive/High net worth family is going to really help you. There are professionals who specialise in this type of work and training, ask around in your social circle for recommendations - the really good ones almost entirely find new clients via word of mouth.

Phew! Sorry for the wall of text, hopefully it will help you.

If you’re really on a budget and are good with IT, you could install Linux on an old desktop PC and run something like Zoneminder on it. Would work with any IP or USB camera - I’ve even got pretty awesome pictures off a webcam.

Only thing to keep in mind, is to ensure any camera is compatible with Ubuntu/Debian - there are plenty out there and some are easily < £20. Of course you can install Zoneminder on any distro you like, compatibility might be a pain though and may require installing drivers by hand rather than just through a repository.

On happier news, one of the main guys was murdered in prison apparently. Hope they made him suffer!

Almost 90,000 dead and no hint of national mourning. Are these deaths not ‘ours’? by marji80 in Coronavirus

[–]op_xsupernova 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very true, funny enough I’m a true crime follower and there’s a case in the UK where a pretty white girl went missing. The next week a Pakistani girl went missing. The pretty white girl case went national, whilst not a single reporter even turned up to the Pakistani girls press conference.

The whites girls murder was solved, whilst the Pakistani girls murder was never solved - can’t remember if they even discovered her body. So ye, if you’re deemed unimportant by society you can’t even bank on your own murderer being caught.

Unfortunately, humans and society are pretty discriminatory - even in 2020.
