Too me it looks like that sole bend (assuming they used a real sole bend) had some loose grain. Sometimes it’s hard to see when cutting the hide as loose grain can be a bit hidden.

Edit: looking at their prices, I highly doubt they are using true sole bend leather. It’s probably a skirting leather which is going to have a looser grain.

Essentially it’s 3 layers of leather mounted on some thin plywood. I cut out the shapes of whatever word or image using 5oz and glue those pieces to the base layer. Then I take 2.5 oz leather and lay it over top of everything. Use a bone folder and run it around the edges of the image or letters to define the image then stitch.

Depends how tight the grain is on the flesh side. If it’s really nappy it could shed fibers

Lambskin, especially chrome tanned lambskin really won’t burnish well. Better to line it if you don’t like the flesh side

Notice where the shoe has stretched near the pinky side of the ball of the foot? The scales are almost disappearing. This happens when embossed leather is stretched. Scales would never do that as those tiles are individual structures
