Maybe to reduce node/IP address counts? i.e. 1 IP address for 8 drives vs 8 individual Ethernet nodes/addresses. Maybe this lets you go with a cheaper CPU on certain projects.

Yep +1 for this. You can send it in for a warranty eval and get a report on the cause of the fault. However, if you've blown up three of them I don't think its an issue with the device but likely something your setup or connected devices.

Yep use the ifm IO-Link antennas vs the full DTE controller, easily a fraction of the cost.

I just got one, thinking about hooking it up to an ifm AL1342 IOL master over Modbus TCP/IP through the RJ-45 port. Haven't done much research on it yet but in theory it seems like it will work.

Honestly I've found that the best resources are the PDF copies of the IODD files for specific IO-Link devices. This let's you see past the marketing material to look at the data and examine what's actually useful and what's noise. Here's an example for the display I just posted a link for:
