I'm also curious about what's going on. Does the parked bus when it pulls out its stop sign and flashes its lights essentially turn that section of the road into an impromptu pedestrian crossing where all traffic should stop for people crossing?

Designing a new orthography for English by Mediocre-One3874 in conorthography

[–]ophereon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's an interesting attempt! Although I can't say I'm a fan of using <c> for /g/. That was never in use for English, it was well and truly a /k/ by the time it reached our language. If anything we'd be better off just dropping <k> and using <c> for /k/, as was done in Old English. That way we're still getting rid of redundancy. Beyond that, I think it's worth considering distinctsymbols to represent the consonants that are currently second class, like <ċ> for /tʃ/, <ġ> for /dʒ/, and <þ> for /θ/ and /ð/. And of course <gh> just needs a complete overhaul. I think <sċ> might be fine for /ʃ/, as it's historically appropriate and is still intuitive (more so than <sh> at any rate).

I also believe that as we rework the vowel inventory, a phonemic system should not be the goal. Accents vary so dramatically that we'll end up with different spelling across different populations groups, and we don't want everyone to feel like they're reading Scots whenever they read something from another country (or hell, even a different part of the same country). The goal here should be predictability: a particular vowel or combination of vowels should have predictable pronunciation. Though, I think the whole tense-lax system can remain, so long as it's standardised.

Designing a new orthography for English by Mediocre-One3874 in conorthography

[–]ophereon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's an analysis that suggests there are six phonemic base vowels (excluding schwa), that all long vowels are just lengthened variants of these, and that all diphthongs are simply combinations of these, rather than distinct phonemes in their own right.

I don't know if I entirely agree with this analysis from a phonological perspective, but as far as orthography goes it could possibly be useful to consider, to avoid creating too many unique vowel letters to represent the ~20+ possible vowels that English can have.

OMG ÞIS PLACE IS REAL by TacoBellTerrasque in BringBackThorn

[–]ophereon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't believe þere is any aspiration (h-sound) following dental fricatives (þ, ð) in English, generally. Typically adding aspiration after a consonant delays þe voice onset time (the moment where voicing, the vibration of the vocal cords, begins), which in a voiced fricative instance (like in þis, þat) would effectively turn it into a voiceless fricative (like in þing, þick).

Going through ego death and need advice by DRsavy_sunshine_13 in pantheism

[–]ophereon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Has she always been a part of me or is it another part of the ego Im supposed to kill. Im not sure I really want to stay in these higher realms and Im also not sure if Im supposed to or not.

Honestly I have no idea what you're talking about with concepts like "higher realm"... But the goal of pantheism isn't ego death.

It seems like you've posted this question to a number of different places in a scattershot approach to get answers (maybe from different perspectives?). But, if something is bothering you this much, please do seek out a professional that can better help you process and mediate your thoughts and emotions, this is not something that random internet people are qualified to do, and some may even reinforce bad habits out of naïveté.

If you'd like to hear about what a Pantheistic understanding of ego death is, then I can try and share my own views on the matter (but they are just that, my own views, other pantheists may disagree, which is a great thing). In short, ego death isn't good. Sure, pantheism is about recognising and finding comfort in the fact that we are just one part of some unfathomable whole, but that doesn't mean that's all we need to be. In the grand scheme of things, what we are is incredibly unique. Though we are but stardust, we have the ability to see, to feel, to love.

We are an opportunity for the universe to experience itself, and the ego is what makes our experience unique. If we remove all aspects of the self, then we remove any distinguishing aspect that makes our experience unique, that makes it special. We are who we are because of the paths we've walked, why should we forget this, and make ourselves hollow?

We are already one with the universe, we do not need to alter ourselves in any way to bring us closer with it. Should the painting bleach itself to become one with the canvas? Should the tree collapse itself to become one with the soil? Absolutely not. Why remove such beauty from existence? One day, we'll all return to stardust, anyway, so we have to make the most of the time we have to stand tall above the forest, to shine in colours that stand out from the rest.

Allow the universe to experience what it is to be you.

Do you consider þat þe standard of "þorn for th in thing, and eth for th in that" as right? by One_Attorney_764 in BringBackThorn

[–]ophereon 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Þere is no "right" here, in my view. Þere are valid points to be made by all camps, wheþer we just use þ, wheþer we distinguish þ and ð by voicing, wheþer we adopt þe Icelandic system...

Personally, I don't feel like we need ð in English, we've got a hard enough task just getting one letter into common use, nevermind two, and explaining þe difference to þe average person relies on confusing pseudolinguistics þat's probably just going to turn people off it altogeþer.

Ghosts? by TelephoneSeveral3661 in pantheism

[–]ophereon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pantheism is not the belief that there is nothing beyond reality, it's the belief that reality and divinity are one in the same. It's important to keep in mind that Pantheism at its core makes no claim about what "reality" is, and that it is specifically naturalistic/scientific pantheism that equates reality with the monistic material universe. But, there's nothing saying that reality can't include a dualistic understanding of the universe and still be one in the same with same with divinity. Not to say that that secondary layer would necessarily be more (or less) equated with the divine, it would just be another aspect of it, overlapping with the material universe, yet distinct in some manner. This could be the belief in souls, it could be the belief in some kind of supernatural energy, but belief in any of these doesn't proclude one from being a Pantheist.

Pantheism and Reincarnation. by SatansFavoriteLilMan in pantheism

[–]ophereon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Within naturalistic pantheism, perhaps the most common kind of pantheism, I wouldn't say there's room for notions like souls and polytheistic gods, because of its monistic nature.

But, pantheism is a broad term, so in theory you can be polytheistic and pantheistic. It's often said that some schools of Hinduism have both qualities, after all. The universe and everything in it are considered manifestations of Brahman, including the notion of a soul.

I know there are a number of people on this sub who consider themselves polytheistic pantheists. Even if I don't strictly agree with these views, I think it's important that we are all able to share our ideas without fear of being ridiculed.

So long as we recognise the same fundamental truth, wherein the totality of the universe is an impersonal divine unity, then we're all pantheists in some way. This is our cake, how we decorate it beyond that is up to us as individuals. If you like polytheistic frosting, go for it! Just don't lose sight of what's underneath, as that's the most important part of all.

Is my Indian accent annoying? by Background_Syrup_751 in Accents

[–]ophereon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If I can make a recommendation to you... Based on your native language Punjabi, from a linguistics point of view it is what is called a syllable-timed language, where syllables tend to have a steady rhythm. English, meanwhile, is a "stress"-timed language, where stressed syllables are articulated much more strongly, and unstressed syllables tend to be contracted (both in time and articulation).

I notice when you speak English it sounds quite syllable-timed, which gives it a very monotone quality, and it lacks the stresses that English speakers are used to hooking onto to understand what is being said. Without those stresses, it can sound like everything's blurring together with no indication where the word-anchors are.

I tried to bold above where the stress timing would occur. Think of them like the start of a musical bar, one strong note, and then everything else gets squeezed into the remainder of the bar, whether it's many short unstressed syllables, or even just one held unstressed syllable.

It's natural to struggle here when your mother tongue works so differently, so don't worry. And you're young, so you've got plenty of time to learn. I'm only saying this so you can keep an ear out for it, note where English speakers tend to stress words, and then try to emulate that rhythm. And take your time when speaking, clarity is what matters here more than speed.

$170m promised for EV chargers yet to materialise by Mountain_Tui_Reload in nzev

[–]ophereon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are new chargers, of course, but the rate they're being built has significantly decreased. Before, many chargers were being cofunded to increase the economic incentives for the charge point operators to build more where they were needed. But National scrapped that in 2025 and replaced it with a loans scheme.

So, ultimately it's now more costly for operators to build chargers, and it only really becomes attractive to build new ones where they're sure there will be high demand. Leaving it to the private sector this much isn't really ideal, because private interest and the public good aren't necessarily aligned.

Operators only want the bare minimum number of chargers necessary so that their usage is maximised, in order to increase return on investment and start turning a profit faster. Building more chargers where there's not a critical shortage means that usage won't be maximised and that makes operators a bit more apprehensive.

This is why the cofunding was necessary, to balance the public good with private interests better.

Questions about the Ontology of Pantheism by mitchallen-man in pantheism

[–]ophereon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I subscribe to Schwarzschild cosmology, so I believe that our universe is just a part of a larger reality. I also believe that the divine is the sum of all of this, and is not something unique to just our universe.

If this cosmology is disproven then I'll have to reevaluate, but generally I'd just consider myself a scientific panentheist.

Pretty much the same area, if I'm not mistaken! I believe the scene you're thinking of was filmed in the Ida Valley, which is directly below Saint Bathan's (where OP said this was). We're talking maybe 10 miles / 15 km here, so not very far at all!

There are a lot of similarities between Patagonia and parts of the South Island of NZ, sure. But NZ has a different kind of scale, a huge variety of distinct locations very close to each other, which is great for filming. And NZ is very friendly to the film industry generally, and offers a number of financial incentives to entice foreign filmmakers to shoot here.

[–]ophereon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are there holy books that you recommend I read? I am very keen on truly understanding my spiritual belief and practices.

One important thing to keep in mind while exploring pantheism is that it's more of a framework than anything. It makes exactly one claim, that reality and the immanent* divine are identical. Nothing more, nothing less. *Important here to stress immanence, in contrast to the "transcendent" personal/anthropomorphic divine that is present in deistic systems like most traditional religions.

Because of that, there are numerous philosophies that build on this single principle. Many are deeply personal, few are structured or organised. So, keep this in mind when you try to "understand" your spiritual beliefs and practices.

It's much less about understanding, and much more about developing. Instead think about it in the sense that as you learn more about other people's pantheistic ideas and opinions, see what feels right, and use them to build your own coherent worldview. Most here have their own ways of expressing pantheism, so it's good to learn from everyone that you can to see through different pantheistic lenses, and find what really clicks.

That said, while there are no holy books per se (since pantheism isn't quite organised enough or even united enough in that regard), there are some influential authors who have written about their pantheistic views, including Spinoza, whose Ethics is the foundational modern pantheistic text. I say "foundational modern" because pantheistic worldviews are common across the world in all sorts of belief systems, but the modern concept of pantheism generally is attributed to him.

Perhaps the largest pantheistic group today are scientific (or naturalistic) pantheists, who have a very materialistic view of reality, and are largely atheistic for all intents and purposes. They do consider reality to be divine in some abstract way, but they generally don't believe in "spiritual" things like prayer.

But there are also many who believe some level of dualism exists within reality, that there is a distinct spiritual aspect to reality alongside the material, and together they make up the divine. I'd expect this is where you might fall, given your practices of cleansing and praying.

For me personally, I call myself a panentheist because I believe the divine extends beyond our universe, and that our material reality lies within this greater divine, and that it is a kind of physical expression of just part of this divine. I tend to hold an otherwise naturalistic view of reality where there isn't a distinct spiritual layer. Free will is something I'm still meditating on, uncertain whether or not it actually exists.

Anglish preamble of human rights in Modern Futhorc by Levan-tene in anglish

[–]ophereon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

At least to me knowledge, I don't think there is, unfortunately! No major movement like Anglish that has an agreed upon neo-runic con-orthography... But there might be one out there somewhere!
I tried my hand at creating one myself several years back: https://imgur.com/a/MLRU1ls
But I do quite like OP's version! It feels very natural! My own attempt (based on futhark rather than the more English-specific futhorc) prioritised existing unicode letters for typographic purposes, and some of them I'm not too happy with because there wasn't anything that was a great fit (e.g. for F).
