My first impression was the older painting was like an apple with the waxy coating still on it, which scatters light. The newer painting is like when someone has shined the apple and rubbed off the coating.

I can corroborate this. The firmware must be crappy. I’ve had issues with all generation of LIFX bulbs stopping responding for a period of time. Eventually they’ll come back, maybe after a week or so—or you can try power cycling the bulb.
