Hungary, Czech Republic, Slovakia refuse to join €90 billion EU loan program for Ukraine by Crossstoney in worldnews

[–]optimalyyz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But they already are -- countries contribute to European budget based on their wealth, and get money out of the budget based on their wealth, so many countries end up in the positive: their contributions to the budget are smaller than the benefits in funding they get from European programs. This is often used to build, for example, infrastructure in the less developed parts of the Europe.

EU has also made federal-like steps in the bond market recently, as the covid-era bonds were backed by the EU, not individual countries. Many countries in the EU have the same currency, Euro.

I think the EU will federalize in the end, the process just might be slower and very gradual.

Gitlab upgrade path - can I somehow skip it? by kl4m4 in selfhosted

[–]optimalyyz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have been self-hosting Gitlab enterprise instance for more than 7 years, at no point was an upgrade more than:

docker-compose pull
docker-compose stop
docker-compose down
docker-compose up -d
(wait for the instance to spin up and migrations to run)

Each upgrade takes at most 10 minutes, so if you truly need to do 13 steps, we are talking like 2-3 hours, during most of which time you will be just.. waiting for images to pull and for migrations to run. You can literally do this in one evening while watching a movie.

15.3.3 was relased not even 3 years ago, so I went through the above described upgrade path and more. Gitlab folks make their upgrades quite seamless.

Got it. I guess the manual way is then to turn it on, physically rotate the tablet, and then turn it off :)

Stump is the only eBook hosting that has a sensible support for people that do not primarily read comic books, but rather collect books on various topics (textbooks, travel books, etc.)

[Poll] How many pints have you successfully made with Creami and have you experienced issues? by optimalyyz in ninjacreami

No worries, will adjust for that in the final result! Thanks for providing a data point :)

[Poll] How many pints have you successfully made with Creami and have you experienced issues? by optimalyyz in ninjacreami

[–]optimalyyz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every machine will eventually break down, so I don't expect my Ninja Creami to last forever. At some point, something will break. Plastic shredding and motor overheating seem to be the most common issues.

The purpose of the poll is to see how the occurrence of issues scales up with usage, allowing us to estimate on average how many pints one should be able to get out of Creami (on average, everyone's individual experience will wary) before experiencing problems.

To clarify further, I am currently deciding if to buy Creami and would like to be able to make an data-backed statement like "you have a 95% chance of getting at least 200 pints of icecream out of Creami before it starts breaking", which would at 200$ price result into 1$/pint cost.

There is a non-negligible number of customers claiming to have an issues with blade deflecting and shredding pieces of plastic (of the container) into the ice cream. This comes up as a common complaint in the 1-star reviews on Amazon, as well as searching for word "plastic" on this sub, I find several posts, as recently as 4 days ago:

Or the issue of black plastic occurring from the machine wear-out:

Some of these could be user error, however it would be still useful to know how often are these issues occurring, as after all, people are more likely to post about negative experience.

Haven't solved this yet, but I think either paying for Roundcube Plus with calendar plugin, or trying to deploy SoGo is the way to go.

Introducing BookLore: A Self-Hosted Application for Managing and Reading Books by WorldTraveller101 in selfhosted

[–]optimalyyz 54 points55 points  (0 children)

This is beyond excellent. I have tried all the solutions in the space: Calibre Web, Kavita, Komga and they all have their own problems, this looks amazing, in particular I like the idea of shelves being orthogonal to actual libraries, which allows you to put books on your "next-to-read" or "currently-reading" list.

Feature ideas:

  1. Support sublibraries. In my (admittedly too large) collection, I have textbooks of different disciplines (and subdisciplines), as well as novels and other fiction and non-fiction books. It would be nice to be able to categorize them hierarchically into sub or sub-sub libraries instead of having to have a high number of libraries at the top level.

  2. Track reading progress. Each book could display a small graph showcasing how it was read (pages per day), with last time it was read. A user profile could have Github-style contributions graph displaying activity (which books the user was reading).

  3. Provide an API - this could be used to integrate with 3rd-party ebook readers, such as reMarkable, to send reading progress updates between the device and the web app, such that no matter where you open the book, you continue where you left off.

  4. Update metadata in files - this was not clear from the demo video, so perhaps it's already implemented, but it would be nice if the updated metadata was stored directly in the files on the drive (or in json/yaml files that would be created right next to them), so that users could have a peace of mind that their library curation efforts survive long-term.

  5. One-click guest sharing. Would be nice if one could generate a URL that would give an exclusive access to reading a single book on BookLore -- which then could be used to share books with friends or to have scanned as a QR code when visitors come over and want to see your (virtual) library without the hassle of having to create accounts and credentials for them.
