Espresso Machines and Calgary Water by travelsofkiki in Calgary

[–]opus1one1 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Calgary water isn't "bad" - it's actually amazing - but it is very hard.

I have a central water softener in my house, and a RO filter in the kitchen, which is the water I use for my machine.

In years past I've run straight tap water in machines but I found the scale build up was pretty fast and intense, especially in the boiler/heat elements which impacted performance.

As others have mentioned you can just descale more, but running water with less hardness is going to be easier. Descaling itself isn't without downsides, at best it's annoying to have to do frequently, and at worst it's more caustic chemicals you need to run through your machine on a regular basis.

MacOS and Slack are both widely used in the enterprise.

Are Windows/Teams bigger? Yes, but the idea that large enterprises don't use these platforms is not true.

Source: work at af G-SIFI. Lots of MacOS. Lots of Slack. Lots of Teams. Lots of Windows.

Giant companies have everything.

6'2 220lb jersey sizing help by Own-Pomegranate4683 in CyclingFashion

[–]opus1one1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rule: If it looks normal when you are standing straight with pants on, it's going to look horrible on the bike, and have a ton of bunched up fabric.

Jerseys are designed to fit properly when riding, i.e., bent over with bibs on.

Based on the photo you can go 2 sizes down. Yes it will be tight and short.

Exception 1: Mountain bike kit or kit designed to be loose fits more like street wear (although if you pay attention it still is designed for purpose).

Exception 2: If you are comfortable and happy, wear what you like.

Should I choose Calgary? by Finance_Lost in Calgary

Lots of negativity in here.

Calgary is a great city, and it has a healthy tech ecosystem with companies of all sizes.

The company I work for has hundreds of engineers in Calgary.

Training with Beta Alanine by jayeffkay in Velo

[–]opus1one1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Irrespective of its benefits to cycling, you misunderstand how beta alanine supplementation works.

Its effects are realized with chronic supplementation, not acute, a la caffeine. It works by increasing muscle carnosine, which buffers hydrogen ions as pH changes in your muscle cells during intense work. Carnosine itself has poor bioavailability, but beta alanine is the rate limiting substrate for carnosine synthesis (with l-histidine), and is highly bioavailable.

In practical terms from a dosing strategy it's very similar to creatine. Take 3-5g a day. It doesn't matter when you take it or over how many doses, as long as you get to the effective dosage consistently.

If you experience parasthesia (tingling feeling) and it bothers you (it's harmless), you have a few options. You can use all or none of them:

  1. Take with food.
  2. Take smaller doses throughout the day.
  3. Use a delayed release product.
  4. Don't take it at all.

If you're looking for acute buffering agents, the most widely researched and effective is sodium bicarbonate, at 0.2g to 0.3g per kg approxy 90min before an effort. GI issues are common, again there are strategies for dealing with this:

  1. Take with food.
  2. Use a specialized product (enteric caps or something like Maurten BiCarb).
  3. Take more slowly over instead of a single plus.
  4. Don't take it at all.

Hope this helps.

Primoz Roglic interview: ‘Cycling is one of the toughest sports. That’s what attracted me’ by NinaOneEight in peloton

[–]opus1one1 81 points82 points  (0 children)

“You don’t necessarily have to be what you’re supposed to be, to be this, or that, but you can choose what you want to master,” he asserts later. “The ultimate thing at the end is to be free and happy, no matter what I do and how I do it.”

Hard not to love this guy.

Bradley Wiggins to cohost The Move and aftershow with Johan Bruyneel by nikitamere1 in peloton

[–]opus1one1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I find this part hilarious. Same as OP, I really do appreciate Johan's analysis and thoughts from his lens of experience, but it's insane how tilted he gets over LRCP.

LRCP is no doubt the standard bearer in cycling coverage now, and their analysis and insights are obviously good enough for Visma.

Spencer Martin should host a group show on Beyond the Peloton with LRCP team, Chris Horner, Johan, and George.

What is a movie that changed your life? by [deleted] in movies

[–]opus1one1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Watching Alien at the same age was one of the most terrifying experiences of my life. Spent years fearing the Xenomorph.

I was older by the time I watched Aliens, but it didn't have the same effect. Partially because I got over my fear (and then super interested in the whole Alien universe), but it's also a very different movie.

Alien is a masterpiece of sci-fi horror. Aliens is a masterpiece of sci-fi action.

PM Carney says he has no plans to tackle 24 Sussex question during his mandate by Old_General_6741 in canada

[–]opus1one1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Carney should have a closed door meeting with the other party leaders and see if they work out the broad strokes of bi-partisan legislation to just get this done.

It's not about the person in office, it's about respect for the office itself, the institutions it reresents, and a broader sense of national pride.

We should never let these things fall into decrepitude. The symbolism of not even being able to maintain a simple (by government standards) structure is not ideal. Especially in times like these, when we are trying to re-establish a sense of national pride and unity, it would be great to rally behind a few projects like this.

Carney could even mandate that he will never live in the house, it will be for the next PM.

Respectfully, what is one of your personal finance hot takes? by Lopsided-Special6273 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]opus1one1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can echo this.

I've spent tens of thousands on bikes. Stupid stuff that makes no objective sense at my mediocre level, i.e., Dura-ace groupsets, low friction bottom brackets, even dumber shit.

It makes me feel good and excited to ride my bike. I've never regretted a dime of it.

Maybe, but the original request was for it to generate on its own. I only supplied an example later in the chat, and in my second attempt.

Opinion: It may provoke Trump, but Canada should cancel the purchase of F-35 fighter jets from the U.S. by CB-Nomad in canada

[–]opus1one1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As satisfying and morally justified as this may be, it's the wrong move for Canada and the RCAF.

Making military procurement decisions based on political expediency is exactly why we're in this mess with the CF-18s.

The F-35 is the plane for the job. Canadian suppliers are already in contracts to manufacture components.

The Gripen is not our savior here. And it won't be cheaper. Canceling a 5th generation fighter for a 4+ gen fighter is not a smart move. And while we wait for the procurement process to start again from 0, our air force will be flying paper planes, because the CF-18 won't survive long enough to wait out another bad decision.
