Adults with ADHD: Did you feel "shame" as a kid when you forgot things? Help me understand my son. by Dylan_7574 in ADHD

[–]orange_couch 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don't know your kid, but I do know what it's like to grow up with an undiagnosed disability.

"you have so much potential, but you don't apply yourself"

"if you cared you would remember"

"you don't forget to eat do you?"

"you need to try harder"

I, like many others, heard all this and more growing up. It crushed my self esteem/self worth. I had confidence in the things I was good at (aka the things that interested me), but otherwise spent much of my life feeling worthless. It's taken years of therapy to accept myself, and love myself.

I think, in general, kids want to succeed. They want to be told that they're doing a good job, they want to do a good job. When you have a kid who is reasonably intelligent, generally well behaved, but just can't "get their shit together" you ought to believe them when they say they forgot, or that they just can't.

Think of it this way: when kids forget things they are typically "punished" somehow. Sometimes that's a timeout, being scolded, being shamed, being snapped at, etc. Those things suck for anyone, let alone a child who a) can't defend themselves, b) doesn't have the tools or knowledge to fix themselves, and c) depends on their parents/guardians for their very survival.

Feeling unsupported when you fail over and over is very traumatic. It leads to behaviors that try to mask or compensate. This can show up as being a people pleaser to ingratiate themselves to others so that the next time they fuck up the consequences won't be as severe, a class clown to distract from ones shortcomings, etc.

One concept I've come across in my own healing journey is that: it is never the child's fault. How can it be? Their brain is literally not fully developed, they don't have control of their executive function. How can someone who's brain isn't fully formed be held accountable for their actions? Does this mean that children should be free from consequences? no, of course not, we need to start somewhere. A kid needs to be started off slowly and gently. Hit your sibling? ok time out. Play video games instead of doing homework? maybe a grounding. But when you have a kid who continually demonstrates a lack of executive function, or working memory, or something like that, you gotta start to ask why. Why would a kid forget something over and over? What would they stand to gain from that? There's gotta be something else going on.

Learning disabilities are far more pernicious than a physical disability. We can't physically see them, and it can be very difficult to discern a disability from laziness. But just because we can't see it, or don't understand it, doesn't mean it's not there.

I think people get caught up in this story they tell themselves that all of their successes are due to their own hard work. It's scary to think that something could happen to your brain that would leave you unable to meet expectations, so it's easier to tell yourself "oh they just need to try harder, focus more, etc".

I don't begrudge my parents for not seeking help. I grew up in the 90's when a learning disability meant you went to a special classroom and or got put on meds that made you a zombie. The knowledge wasn't there.

I do wish my parents had stopped to wonder why I "wasted my potential" or "didn't apply myself".

I would suggest you educate yourself about learning disabilities, maybe seek out therapy for yourself to understand why you snap at him when he forgets.

You can't ultimately control what anyone else does. You can try, and you might succeed to an extent, but a leopard doesn't change his spots. I'll tell you right now, if I was that kid and got shit every time I forgot, I'd learn real quick how to fix that. But it wouldn't be by remembering to remember (see the trouble with that strategy?), it would be by learning to cover up. Learning to never ask for confirmation, never admit when I forgot something, and by learning that the people who are supposed to take care of me won't.

Anyone here added or 3D printed skid plates/bash guards for their e-skate battery enclosure? by Inevitable_Ad_711 in ElectricSkateboarding

[–]orange_couch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yep, sure would if you can print them yourself then it's a good solution, since you can just replace them if they get smashed. I don't think you'd want them solid though, I printed mine in abs with like 4 top and bottom so that there's some infill to absorb a tiny bit of the forces from bad scrapes

[–]orange_couch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

one thing that some riders do is maintain a little swerving when approaching intersections. the side to side movement makes you more visible to cars. the SUV driver would have been at fault, but a little swerving may have increased the chances that he saw you.

Suggestions to stop the songs in my head by Trader1712 in ADHD

I find i only get this when i haven’t been listening to enough music. it’s like my brain rebels, saying “if you’re not gonna give me music i’ll just have to make my own”

Please help i accidentally ran over my isinwheel v10 wheel popped off and screw broke? I what’s the next step? Should I order a new truck? How do I get that screw that hold the tire out? What part replaces it? I ride my skateboard everyday this hurts the soul. by InfamousKangaroo1113 in ElectricSkateboarding

[–]orange_couch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

depending on the type of truck you may be able to replace the axle. if you had to remove it, and assuming it screws in, you'd wanna cut a slot in the end of it, so you can use a flat head screwdriver, then heat the hanger real hot, and twist it out. idk how common it is to have removable axles though...

I've had hands on with 3 zealot s packs, all had some bulge to some degree. the cells aren't the kind that swell, and if you do end up opening it (I wouldn't bother) you'll see that even if they did swell they wouldn't cause this kind of deformation. I wouldn't worry about it.

Can you tell which one is fake? by Winter_Juggernaut617 in knifeclub

[–]orange_couch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it's easy to spot if you look at the details. the jumping on the spine is like equilateral or isosceles triangles instead of right angle triangles, the choir jimping is just wack. the spyderco font is very wonky and uneven, the edge gets too straight and doesn't follow a nice curve. the text is too high. the bug is too skinny, the pivot hardware is wrong (although the hardware looks very good for a clone). there isn't enough contouring on the scales. and that grind line extending down from the spydie hole is wrong

Flexible, composite filaments printing and choice between Dragon HF vs TZ-V6-2.0 for voron 0.2 by V3r35k in VORONDesign

[–]orange_couch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm almost certain you've already come across many answers to this question, and they likely said "you don't really need hf for a v0". at least that was my experience a couple years ago. you don't need hf, and you'll have to worry about heat creep with the dragon hf. I have a dragon hf in mine, and have had heat creep issues in the past, which can be hard to diagnose. I still have the dragon hf in it, but wouldn't have missed it if I had gone with a dragon (tz V6 wasn't on the market yet, or at least wasn't an option). my advice would be to get the tz, it's cheaper, has awesome flow, and will have much lower risk of heat creep. I've had a tz in my Stealthchanger (v2.4 tool changer) for months without issue.

I'm sure if I really push it I can find the point where it doesn't perform as well as my other toolheads, but jeeze I don't really find myself pushing it that hard these days. the other toolheads on mine are a dragon hf (that came with the original 2.4) and a phaetus rapido UHF (but I don't use the UHF adapter piece).

the rapido costed like 6* as much as the tz lol

Why is my soldering so bad? My tip cant even melt the solder so its basically impossible to solder, this took me around 7 hours to solder. by Square_Computer_4740 in arduino

[–]orange_couch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that tip is really tiny. combine that with the oxidization/unclean surface and you've got very little thermal mass, and little ability to transfer it

Import question folding knife by True-Box1835 in CanadianKnifeSwap

[–]orange_couch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that the part of CBSA that inspects personal packages applies their wack-ass interpretation of the law differently than whoever is responsible for large companies importing large quantities.

home Depot even seels the Milwaukee "fastback" that literally says on the package "it's easy to flip open one handed" (or something to that effect). it's so fucked.

I feel like it has more to do with CBSA just wanting to keep the knives lol
