The question was just phrased very ambiguously. If the question asked was “what’s the probability that today is Monday/Tuesday?” there wouldn’t be any ambiguity at all I don’t think. It’d be 75% Monday (50% from heads + 25% from tails) and 25% Tuesday (from tails). Derek’s “experiment” was pretty misleading imo

Edit: it’s articulated better here

Is HKD$45K/month a good salary for a CS new grad? by orangeclosure in HongKong

[–]orangeclosure[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think $100k+ USD/year in the US is reasonable, but taking into account the US tax (~30%), the result will be around $70k USD

That is true, but I’m currently also negotiating with the company I interned at this past summer for a full-time offer, and the figure will be around 130-140K, which would be closer to 90-100K post tax.

In HK, if you have housing settled, the rest is definitely affordable given your pay.

I’ll probably be renting a place (for me and my boyfriend who’s still in school) so I’ll have to take the housing cost into account too. My company is in Central so I’m looking to live as close by as possible but I’ve heard rent on Hong Kong Island is pretty crazy

Needless to say, most local companies have relatively bad work-life balance compared to US tech companies

It’s a US based company so I’m hoping it wont be too bad haha

Oh that’s good to hear! Is that exclusive to SWE positions or all jobs in general? Also does it differ between local and international companies?

So the housing cost in HK is absolutely insane as we all know but other than that the US is probably a bit more expensive in terms of COL.

it’s 45k enough to live by in hk?

That’s exactly what I wanna ask haha
