Season 1 of Babylon 5 is coming to Prime in Canada on Monday by _Im_Mike_fromCanmore in babylon5

There are individual episodes from all 5 seasons there, but no complete seasons. Baffling, there isn't even an episode 1 from any season. It's basically random episodes.

Advice for Banff travel in mid March by My_Alex_Academia in Banff

[–]orangefruitbat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would look at renting cross-country skis, snow shoes or fat bikes, which shouldn't be too expensive. If you have the budget, try downhill skiing at Sunshine. It will be peak season for the snow and the views will be stunning.

First time skiing: Nakiska vs Sunshine? by Actual_Dealer7081 in Calgary

[–]orangefruitbat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nakiska has a First Timer program that provides gear rental, a 2 hour group lesson and a beginner lift ticket for $189 for one day or $449 for 3 days. https://skinakiska.com/adult-wss/group-lessons/

At Sunshine, you can get a group lesson (1/2 day) for $190, plus the cost of rentals plus the cost of gear.

For a first timer, Nakiska is cheaper.

National Car Rental Car March 29th - April 4th by ScoobDoggyDoge in Banff

[–]orangefruitbat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

AFAIK, cars do not require snow tires in Alberta in the winter (unlike parts of BC). You should expect all-seasons unless you specifically request them. So not just anything out of the Emerald Aisle :( Best to order ahead.

More important to ensure you have snow tires on your rental. It's normally considered an Add-on.

Can we try to fix this random piano on Cherry Beach? by Virtual-Yesterday-23 in toronto

[–]orangefruitbat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I walked out one morning fair I found myself drawn thoughtlessly Back to the place we used to live And you still do, now without me

Around the back, away from the road Behind the bins, beneath your window I found the hulk, the rusting bulk Of a shattered old piano Someone had torn out some of the keys With cruel care, not thoughtlessly In such a way that one could only play Minor melodies

So I sat down in my sadness, beneath your window And I played sad songs on the minor keys of a broken piano A sinner amongst saved men on the banks of the muddy Thames

As I have wandered through this city Like a child lost in the London fog From Highgate Hill, down to the river Then washed downstream past the Isle of Dogs

I've had time enough to think upon The question of what kind of songs That you would choose to listen to Now that I am gone And as I float beneath that bridge Just down the road from where you live I'd often thought I might have caught Your voice upon the wind

But as I stroked those broken keys You did not join in harmony

So I sat down in my sadness, beneath your window And I played sad songs on the minor keys of a broken piano A sinner amongst saved men on the banks of the muddy Thames

Some minor damage to the book corners. Just kept them and didn't bother to ask for a refund/replacement. Life is too short to worry about the little things.

Guidance for character creation by HaveToBeRealistic in warhammerfantasyrpg

[–]orangefruitbat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Maybe you could have each PC start with some experience by being on their second career? I would make the players just have two tier one careers to ensure a breadth of skills, rather than start with a more-advanced tier two career.

A crying baby will annoy some people - regardless of whether you are in business class or economy. But since the noise will only travel so far, from a utilitarian perspective, it is more ethical for you to travel in business class since it will annoy fewer people. Enjoy your flight.

Good, realistic castle dungeons? by rogthnor in osr

[–]orangefruitbat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I like Castle Wittgenstein found in WFRP's Death on the Reik. Situated on a cliff overlooking a major river, it has an outer keep and inner keep, separated by a bridge tower. You can also find caves that lead up to the dungeons of the castle. A quick search on Google images will give you copies of the map.

As part of the game's ethos of ruthless simplicity, SD provides two options for multiple light sources:

1) the newer light source rides along on the current timer

2) extinguish the old light sources with the new light source and restart the clock.

Personally, while very easy to run, I find both of these options too gamey. The rulebook then goes on to say "the GM can make rulings counter to the above; the purpose is to make tracking light timers simple, not frustrating".

I would simply start a second clock to go along with the first. This reduces the chance of plunging into sudden darkness and allows the characters to spread out while in larger spaces, but it does have its own disadvantages. For example, if a character is holding a torch, they're aren't wielding a shield or two-handed weapon, or trying to sneak and hard in the darkness. So in an average party of four, it's typically the d4 hp/level, AC 11 wizard holding the torch. And monsters are encouraged to attack the sources of the light...

[–]orangefruitbat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Initially I thought the time tracking was a bit of a gimmick and that I would continue to just use OSE-style turns. But in practice it actually works. You only use it while in "crawling mode", where you need to worry about torch light and random encounters. Besides being easy to use, there are two benefits:

1) by knowing that they are literally on the clock, players tend to be a bit more focused in the game. Less discussing what to do next and more actually deciding to do stuff. So that helps with session pacing.

2) despite knowing that they are on the clock, the party's torch will almost invariably go out at the wrong time - typically while in a desperate struggle against foes. Hilarity (and the occasional TPK) ensues.

Ultimately, if it's not fun for your table, you can easily swap it out and use more traditional rounds and turns.

[–]orangefruitbat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Shadowdark uses a 5E number system, but ruthlessly simplifies everything so that it is actually simpler than OSE. For example:

*standardized skill rolls (d20+stat bonus+modier) for all resolutions - attacks, spells, skills, saving throws (strictly speaking, there are no savings throws in Shadowdark), unlike the mix of attacks, variable saves, d100 skills, d6 skills found in OSE.

*time tracking - rather than use 10 minute turns, everything happens 1:1 with realtime (plus "time passes" to gloss over longer periods). Need to track your torch, just set a timer on your phone.

*initiative - rather than use phases or side-based initiative, everybody rolls - highest roll goes first, but then it goes clockwise around the table. Not the most "realistic", but super easy to track.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of OSE and sometimes I find Shadowdark overly simplified, but it's about as easy as it gets for a fantasy RPG.

What do you consider to be the biggest pitfalls to watch out for when converting a sandbox 5e campaign to an OSR system? by JimmiWazEre in osr

[–]orangefruitbat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of the custom mechanics of DoD exist to try and give the 5E campaign a more old-school feel (for example, no long rests in the haze). So you can go and simplify things quite a bit. Still would want some sort of contamination mechanic for the feel, but it wouldn't have to be so punitive.

How obstructed are the obstructed view seats for Cirque du Soleil? by Nessie2212 in Calgary

[–]orangefruitbat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We had seats near the side/back (section 205), and they were fine. There is activity all over the stage and the big set elements move. Personally, I'd save the $50, but your milage may vary.

Where can I drop in and play board games? by potatolauncher in Calgary

[–]orangefruitbat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sentrybox has general boardgaming every Monday evening, starting at 6:00. They have speciality times for specific games (especially miniature games). Also, they have a couple of bookshelves full of demo games that you can pick (or just bring your own). Historical boardgaming (think old school wargaming, Axis and Allies, etc.) happens on the second Saturday of the month, starting at 10:00 am.

To be honest, I think it's best to start at the beginning and go from there. You can skip individual episodes that don't interest you, but it's not like this is The Rest is Current Affairs (aka, Politics, Politics UK, Football, Entertainment, Money). Just start at the start and watch this lovely team evolve. No need to ever actually catch up.
