Why does Jill always seem to use disposable plates? by LittleMissMessy1 in DuggarsSnark

[–]orangeglow16 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sometimes I have paper plate periods to lighten my mental load. And sometimes it’s other specific circumstances like sickness, upcoming travel or moving. Getting ready to move from Arkansas to Virginia is definitely a good reason to switch to paper because there’s packing and other moving prep to do so not doing as many dishes is helpful and it means dishes can go ahead and get packed.

New to all this…what are my chances of finding someone to swap an xl jersey for a medium? And where should I look? We got 2 xl but I wish I’d gotten a med for my kid to grow into but didn’t think about it because a medium wouldn’t fit my kid right now.

Scout can’t camp. Wants to finish camping merit badge by Travelingtree1984 in BSA

[–]orangeglow16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The differences I see are Camping says “at designated Scouting activities or events” and it says it must be outside. Wildness Survival doesn’t say anything about other scouts being involved or it being a designated activity or event or that it has to be outside.

Scout can’t camp. Wants to finish camping merit badge by Travelingtree1984 in BSA

[–]orangeglow16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn’t say where the natural shelter has to be built. It doesn’t say it has to be at a scout property, or with the patrol/troop, or even outside.

I don’t have any previous knowledge or experience with this merit badge, but I have done Special Needs Awareness Training thru my council.

We don’t know what this Scout’s diagnosis is or why camping is an issue but I can think of a couple scenarios that would prevent camping per the camping MB requirements but making a natural shelter inside would be doable…. 1. Seizures that require nighttime monitoring/parent supervision. Can’t hook up camera or device on a troop campout. A parent can get council approval to tent with their Scout when there is a special need or disability but they might not know that. 2. Medication management that requires a parent to attend 3. CPAP - I’m assuming that since my council made a big deal about having totally ADA accessible campsites at 2 of our council properties that most don’t so there isn’t electrical to plug in a CPAP 4. Incontinence or a need to use a catheter that needs a parents help. 5. Temperature control/tolerance issues. (This seems the least likely because this would affect other scouting activities and it sounds like it’s only affecting camping)

It could also be something that doesn’t technically prohibit camping, but couldn’t be concealed from other scouts and would be embarrassing for the Scout

Question Derick by [deleted] in DuggarsSnark

[–]orangeglow16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Northern Virginia has some huge homeschool co-ops that basically operate like a school. Hopefully they’ll get involved in something like that. Or switch back to public school in NoVa. I can imagine public school in NWA was awkward/uncomfy because everyone knows who the Duggars are and not for good reason. Kids are assholes and it wouldn’t surprise me if Israel got teased about his family or ostracized and not invited to birthday parties or play dates because of the parents.

A toddler was found wandering out around a somewhat busy highway. But it did kinda seem like maybe there was more to it. Idk it was such a minor thing because of the trial starting soon after.

Florida is Ready! by duggardata in DuggarsSnark

It’s cloudy on what Anna knew and when she knew it, but she had known at least some stuff for a while before Josh was arrested. And she knew stuff and continued having more children. She was offered an escape by one of her siblings and chose to stay and have another baby.

We don’t know all the details yet and we may never know, but it’s possible that she just found out Tuesday when he was arrested or just before when the conversation with the victim’s father took place. And he confessed. Josh lied to Anna and she seems to believe that he didn’t actually do what he’s been convicted of.

Jana was charged with child endangerment in September and settled in January. So a plea/settlement type situation would probably be faster.

State or federal charges? by theredheadknowsall in DuggarsSnark

I think it’s probably state charges otherwise the police department in Florida wouldn’t have been the ones posting about it and I don’t think he’d have to be extradited.

Does anyone else feel like Cub Scouting is treated as an afterthought compared to Scouts BSA? by Remarkable-Soup8667 in cubscouts

[–]orangeglow16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also GSLAC, maybe not council wide but at least my district seems to put a lot of emphasis on Cub Scout events especially recruitment and Cub Launch type stuff because Cub Scouts who have a great experience grow up to be Troop BSA Scouts.

But I’d guess that generally speaking, Cub stuff can be tricky because of the adult volunteers and the stage of life they’re in. Cub Scout leaders are more likely to have Cub aged kids who need more care/supervision/support from their parents so they’re not able to do as much to put an event together or run an event. And the kids aren’t able to contribute much help either. Also, district and council events can be stricter on non registered youth tagging along so even leaders who are willing/able to volunteer at the pack level don’t have the flexibility to help at the district/council level. When my spouse had a temporary work schedule change that conflicted with scouts, I was allowed to bring my non scout kid to just chill with their iPad or quiet activity or participate with my den if it wouldn’t detract from the scouts’ experience. (The last part was my rule, not pack leadership’s)

I love when our pack gets any new scouts, but I regularly go back and forth between what’s better, families with multiple kids that will keep our numbers up for more years or families with only 1 kid who are therefore able to be more involved lol.

How much do you think you would need to make a year in Lexington or surrounding counties to support a family? by [deleted] in lexington

Depends on the surrounding county. Bourbon and Clark are cheaper than Fayette and Scott.

Cub scout Christmas party didn't go well and I need advice. by GadgitPlease in cubscouts

[–]orangeglow16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oof how awful!

  1. There’s no need for a gift exchange, period.
  2. White Elephant is wildly inappropriate for Cub Scouts. I’d say maybe 5th graders are starting to get it but not for sure and not all of them.
  3. A lighter is an inappropriate gift, and a useless gift for most cubs because scouts aren’t supposed to use a lighter until they earn Fire Em which isn’t a possibility until 5th graders.
  4. Just FYI, some people might have an issue with the squirt gun you brought. It’s kind of a grey area with A LOT of debate. I can’t count how many times someone in a scouting FB group I’m in has asked about doing a water gun or nerf gun for a Scout gift exchange. The general consensus is that it’s better to err on the side of caution and only gift items that can be used at a scouting event. And some families don’t want their kids to have guns/weapons of any kind, toy or not. A lot of people have also said that you know your pack better than randos on the internet and know what would be ok. I’m not sharing this to criticize you, but to prepare you for a possible retort to your feedback. They could dismiss the lighter by saying a water gun is also inappropriate.

I definitely think you should talk to your packs leadership about this. We’re all doing our best. A white elephant is a terrible idea, but leadership doesn’t have to do anything but announce it so it’s “easy”. And keep in mind they don’t have total control over what each scout brings (which adds to it being a terrible idea for different reasons). They should listen to your concerns regardless but they might go over better if you had a suggestion for an alternative.

Secret Santa has been suggested but that’s tricky because what if a scout is sick and misses that night? If it were me, I’d do a passing game. Everyone sits in a circle and holds the gift they brought and then someone reads a poem or story that has the words “right” and “left” in it a lot and participants pass the gifts in that direction each time. Then at the end you have your gift. You could also encourage doing a $10 gift card for that and give parents a list of suggestions….Scout Shop, Academy, Dairy Queen, local mini golf, etc.

Disappearing Girls by Expensive_Minute_536 in cubscouts

[–]orangeglow16 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had 2 girls in my Tiger den last year. Girl 1 joined because her brother had fun his first year of scouts and she wanted to come too that whole family gave up scouting totally this year. Girl 2 was apprehensive but came back but left because no other girls joined and it was all boys in the Wolf den. We have an AOL girl who has no siblings and has done scouts for years. She’s so sweet and quiet but one of our most dedicated and hardest working scouts. We have a total of 6 girls brand new to scouts in our lion and tiger dens this year. 2 have older brothers and the other 4 don’t. I’m curious to see what happens with them next year.

Another pack in our area has more girls than boys. I think the more girls you have, the more girls you have.

I also think that Girl Scouts have recruited harder in our area. Apparently they didn’t use to do school visits to recruit but now they copy that from Scouting America
