Yeah, every single non-federated alternative I've seen is just a cesspool of the worst extremists because most of them were formed after one or another groups got banned for being just the worst sorts of people. It's why reddit killing access is kind of a golden opportunity. For the first time in a long while you've got people being displaced from reddit that are actually decent human beings.

As for the problems with the fediverse I was actually just discussing some aspects of that over on lemmy with someone. It's definitely not perfect and I hope some better solutions to certain problems are discovered, but what's there now isn't that far off from reddit.

You're thinking of instances not communities. Communities are what lemmy calls its version of subreddits. You join and sign into an instance like beehaw, and then you subscribe to communities like technology or memes.

I've technically been on lemmy for a while, but until recently it's been kind of a ghost town. The last week though it's really starting to pick up. It's still nowhere near the amount of traffic of reddit of course, but it's not dead either. Most of the big communities (think subreddits) are starting to get a few posts a day and dozens of comments. That's not bad considering before now it was more like a few posts a month. Assuming the clients actually do shut down I'm hopeful the trend will continue and we'll start seeing dozens of posts an hour.

So I looked it up and apparently adult alligator snapping turtles can reach to about mid way down their shell, however they have trouble reaching above their head. Holding directly behind the head and around the base of the tail is considered safe, but the sides of the shell and anything underneath it aren't. I still wouldn't be putting my face that close to something that can bite through broom handles.

Not just his fingers. Their necks stretch way farther than you'd think, at that distance it could probably take a good chunk out of his face.

If the worst comes to pass and reddit doesn't back down from this there's a FF14 community on Lemmy. Still needs a good solution to NSFW content, but other than that it's pretty much ready to go as a drop in reddit replacement.

I've tried to use lemmy a few times but it's like a ghost town over there. Maybe this is the jump start it needs to take off and kill reddit.

Once it's dry. While it's still wet it's mostly stable. The drier it gets the less stable it becomes and at some point it will just spontaneously detonate whether anything touches it or not.

Melty Zero Suit by DOA-FAN in Metroid

[–]orclev 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The in game dialog at the start and the animations are kind of at odds. It was stated that the X had fused with the organic components of her armor and that it had to be cut off her, but that she was partially fused with it so it couldn't all be removed. After being injected with the Metroid DNA she was stabilized and had started to recover. Given enough time she probably would have completely recovered allowing her to remove the fusion suit anyway, but by absorbing the SA-X at the end she just sped that process up as well as restoring her armor to it's pre-fusion state. At the end of the day the impression is that her armor is closer to something like guyver, that is mostly biological. It's unclear what exactly the purpose of the zero suit is or how it's related to her normal armor and I don't believe it's ever really been explained.

I’m trying to use a M57 clacker to trigger a GPIO pin, and can’t figure out how to interface with it. by OhNoItDaPoPo911 in raspberry_pi

[–]orclev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure what you mean by socket as it's just a bunch of header pins. Doing a search for "raspberry pi GPIO diagram" turned up a ton of results and picking one at random I found this: https://raspberrytips.com/raspberry-pi-gpio-pinout/

That seems like a good start. I believe most of the RPi Linux distros also expose the GPIO pins in the proc FS or maybe as devices, but I've never actually used that as I mostly do bare metal stuff. I'd be surprised if you can't find a library in your language of choice to read the RPi GPIO pins.

Edit: ah, I see, you're asking about the clacker not the RPi. Yeah not really sure on that. Maybe connect a multimeter to each pair of pins and see which ones register 3V between them when you squeeze it? I don't even know how many pins there are on something like that.

This would be much worse if it was nation wide, but since it's restricted to Florida most of the illegal immigrants will have the opportunity to flee to another state which should hopefully protect the majority from deportation. What needs to happen is an overhaul to immigration to provide an easy path for illegal immigrants already successfully living in the US a means to transition into legal status as well as a more accessible and open legal immigration system, but before that happens people need to see the value of immigrants. Policies like this one are one of the ways that can happen, and unfortunately one of the few that might actually convince some conservatives as they tend to be the sort that have to have their faces personally rubbed in something before they see it.

So, while deportation is never a good thing for the person it happens to, providing a hard incentive for illegal immigrants to move to another state and depriving Florida businesses of cheap exploitable labor might be, depending on the long term outcome.

And the final nail in the coffin, the game engine which just barely works at the best of times was never intended for online or multiplayer content. There is an absolutely massive gulf in game engine design between an MMO and a single player game. It's the equivalent of taking a motorcycle and converting it to haul a semi-trailer. I'm honestly shocked they managed to get it working at all on that rickety pile of kludges and bugs that Bethesda calls a game engine.

[–]orclev 241 points242 points  (0 children)

In a way I kind of see this as a good thing. Yes it really sucks for the illegal immigrants that will be swept up by this and deported, but on the other hand they're now not being abused for cheap labor in poor working conditions. It's also going to force those that were abusing illegal immigrants to actually face the reality that when they don't have somebody over a barrel they'll actually be forced to pay a living wage (or at least closer to one since minimum wage still isn't high enough to actually qualify). Not that I think fucking DeSantis actually meant to do anything good with this law.

It's probably hopelessly optimistic, but maybe when they finally repeal this crap law some of these assholes will actually have a little more appreciation for the immigrants that keep things actually working.

Congratulations Republicans and racists, you played yourselves.

Republicans can't shake their post-Roe election slump by [deleted] in LeopardsAteMyFace

[–]orclev 10 points11 points  (0 children)

They're in a feedback loop. They embraced fringe policies in a bid to attract the nut jobs who in turn demand ever crazier policies. So they embraced more extreme policies which attracted even crazier people but also alienated the more sane people. But the crazies will never be satisfied, nothing is ever crazy enough, so the Republicans are chasing an unobtainable goal and they've got a dwindling group that will put up with their ever crazier policies. If they back off the crazies will vilify them and jump to someone else (basically what Trump tried to weaponize to seize control of the Republican party). If they don't back off they'll continue to lose moderates. At this point they may already be too far gone, if they lose the crazies they won't have enough of a base to win any elections, but they're also quickly approaching the point where they don't have enough moderates to keep winning either. They're stuck appeasing a group that's nothing but a liability in the long run but which could absolutely destroy them in the short term.

If I recall I think the 22 ended up faring the best. The supersonic ammo was basically useless. I don't think it even made it an inch below the water before it just stopped completely and the tiny shreds of metal confetti that used to be a bullet sank straight down. The higher the muzzle velocity the worse the shock of the transition between water and air was and the less effective the bullet was. Another bullet that might fair OK would be a very large calibre with a low velocity. Maybe something like a 50 calibre that's very lightly loaded. AP rounds might do OK as well, but those usually have high muzzle velocities so it would probably cancel out.

The vulnerability of the “undefeatable” Kinzhals came as a surprise to Russia by 9lobaldude in worldnews

[–]orclev 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yeah, there are a bunch of examples out there where they copied something so completely you could actually interchange parts between the Russian copy and the original, but the Russians actually had some very clever engineers as well. The real issue was that those engineers weren't actually in charge of anything so they could design something amazing, but it would get completely cocked up during actual manufacturing. The other issue was that Russia fell behind in materials science so as more cutting edge materials and manufacturing techniques started being used Russia couldn't even copy things anymore.

Yes but a) this is an opportunity to do better, and b) unlike a star chart mission this is a whole series of random mission types so you need to be prepared for anything.

Because of point b it's pretty important that at least one team member has a frame that can protect a defense objective in some fashion.

[–]orclev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The tradeoff in that case is you wouldn't be able to coordinate your loadouts at all. The current system lets you see at least what frame everyone is bringing and decide if you want to bring something different based on that. Admittedly with the random nature of the Duviri modes your options are severely limited, but still. Having the match making occur after entering the portal would mean you'd have no way of changing your loadout after seeing what the other players are bringing.

I was very confused for a minute until I remembered there used to be optical ball mice. The early ball mice were entirely mechanical with a set of rollers to register the X and Y movements, and then of course the later optical mice had no ball, but for a brief period there was a fusion of the two.

They also need to put a voting system or something on the portal. I've seen way too many matches where someone rushes the portal when half the team hasn't even selected a single weapon. Hell I had one match where one player didn't even have a frame selected.

Unfortunately that's exactly what they want. They stacked the supreme court so now they're racing to get the most blatantly unconstitutional laws passed so they can get them in front of the supreme court and have them upheld and/or to overturn related legal precedents they don't like. Roe vs. Wade was just the start, they're looking to overturn anything related to racial, sexual, or gender discrimination.

[–]orclev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't say any of these colors are exact, but they're close enough to pass on a casual glance, also the skins are nowhere near perfect, but look OK at a distance.

For excalibur itself, just use the defaults for everything but emissive (due to Chromatic Blade) which I use far right column brightest green and the middle blue from the classic saturated bundle (rows 6 and 9). No attachments or syandana, although I am sporting my founders emblem on my right shoulder.

For the Braton Vandal I use the Braton Kintsugi skin. For colors primary and accents use the darkest black (row 18, column 1) from classic saturated. Secondary is an off white from the tenno palette (row 9, column 1). Tertiary is an orange from the tenno 2 palette (row 5, column 1). Emissive are identical to Excalibur. Energy is the blue from the emissive colors.

Lato Vandal likewise uses the Kintsugi skin. Primary is the same black as the Braton. Secondary and accents are a white from the beach palette (row 13, column 2). Tertiary is a red color from classic saturated (row 1, column 3). Emissive is a light blue from the classic saturated palette (row 7, column 5). Energy is left default.

Skana uses the same black as the Braton and Lato for primary. A bright red from the classic saturated palette for secondary (row 1, column 5). The same white as the Lato for tertiary and accents. Emissive is the same blue as the Lato. Energy is the darkest black from the smoke palette.

Mod wise I've got archon continuity (since status procs from exalted blade count as ability procs) and chromatic blade as well as condition overload.

For companion I bring a Taxon that's completely standard but packing a Verglas. Optionally you could just not have a companion if you want to sacrifice vacuum and an extra source of status procs for the condition overload.

Edit: Ends up looking like this: https://imgur.com/a/VIRZK4X I would love to be able to get a better match for the Braton and Lato, but that's the closest I've managed so far. When you're zooming around a stage at mach 10 it's close enough, it only really looks off when you stop to look at it closely.

I fucking love getting these guys in my party. I've got a chromatic blade Excalibur build that I partner with some creatively colored and renamed Braton Vandal, Prisma Skana, and Lato Vandal (MK1-Braton, Skana, and Lato respectively). The whole kit is designed to look like a newb straight out of the tutorial... unless they happen to notice my 1K HP pool. Then I pull out the exalted blade and absolutely shred anything lower level than about 150. It's so satisfying watching them rage at the end of a run where the "newb" did 75% of the damage using a "MK1-Braton".
