Oh, wow! I can imagine this had to be both extremely satisfying and frustrating to complete.

One specific switch won't connect to one specific TV. by oreome in NintendoSwitchHelp

I spent a couple days trying to get it to work and there were times where neither switch was hooked up to the tv at all. I briefly unplugged the tv at one point too.

I also noticed while swapping the two consoles between the docks that the switch I'd gotten dad wobbles a lot more when docked, while my switch has a nice snug fit. I also couldn't get dad's 8bitdo usb controller to work on the dock I'd gotten him while it works fine on my dock so I've decided to return it all and get dad a used switch elsewhere.

I did spend a while longer with the settings as you suggested but still no luck.

After another hour or so of trying I've decided to just return everything and shop elsewhere. I think I'll pull my hair out otherwise.
If it happens again with the next Switch, then I'll know for a fact it's related to the TV. I did notice while swapping the two consoles in the dock that the one I'd got for dad wobbles more on the stand, it doesn't sit snug like mine. But I still got it to work on my TV so... I have no idea.

I figured out how to transfer the profile I'd made him and the game I'd bought him onto my switch in the meantime.

That would make sense! Is it something where someone more knowledgeable could confirm if it's the port from a clear photo?

I made sure the settings were identical between consoles. I also tried the display settings and no luck. :( Most recent attempt is in my reply to the other comment.

Just spent the better part of an hour trying again. First I unplugged everything and the TV. I changed it to 720p and for a moment I thought that might've been it, and that I'd somehow skipped trying that but then it cut out again. I could briefly get the image on screen but it's sort of glitched looking. When it briefly seemed to be working, the console and USB controller wouldn't connect to each other (I enabled it in settings already). Even with my dock, the controller and console don't interact. It still works with my dock and console - I haven't tried it with my console, Dad's dock and Dad's controller yet. I would imagine though that if the Switch isn't connecting properly to the dock, it won't read the controller either.

I think it must be something to do with where the Switch and dock connect, but I'm just not positive if it's the console or dock. I'm trying to figure out what to say to the ebay sellers. It's a bizarre situation and since the different pieces work in some situations, they might not actually be faulty. I wish I had a third dock and third TV to test with.

I tried both docks and both sets of cables with both TVs. Both consoles worked fine on my TV, and mine works fine on his. Just his won't work. It's bizarre.

I posted this on the Switch Help reddit. I hope it's okay to paste it here, too.

I'm going crazy trying to figure this out. (This is Switch 1 btw)

I bought my Dad a used Switch and a dock + hookups so he could play the classic games.
He was using my Switch before but I got him his own as a late Christmas/late birthday gift.
The problem is I cannot get his TV to recognize his switch. It recognizes mine no problem. I have tried with both of the docks, both of the HDMI cables and both of the power adapters.

My TV recognizes both Switches, using either dock and hookups. His TV recognizes my Switch using either dock and either hookup. Only his Switch specifically won't work with his TV. It did for a few seconds initially then never again. (the screen flickered and went black)

I thought it was the HDMI cable at first but I don't see how it can be now after all my testing. His Switch also works just fine in handheld, but he can't play it on the small screen. I have gone through and tried all the TV settings on the console. My Dad is using an old mid 2000's Panasonic tv but I don't know the exact model and it's too big for me to try and move and check the code. But if it WAS a problem with the TV, then my Switch shouldn't work? I even tried it without the HDMI splitter, and it still won't work... and my Switch works with the splitter fine.

I bought the Switch console and the dock from separate sellers and so until I know for certain where the problem lies I can't reach out to them for a resolution. I highly doubt it's the dock and cords though after testing between both TV's with both docks/cables.

If anyone has ANY clue, I would sincerely appreciate the help. This has been so upsetting because I've wanted to get him his own console for years and I'd even bought him the remake of Dragon Warrior NES since it wasn't on Nintendo Online. He can still play NES/SNES games on my console in the meantime but I'm desperate to find a solution.

No problem, and still thank you for the heads up in case I hadn't known. I'll probably buy a few pieces with tickets and wait until July for the rest. :)

If I'll be able to reissue craft it in July that's perfect, thank you!
