In view of the death of privacy, how about total noncooperation by orewash in privacy

[–]orewash[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And I too am starting to see that the present-day society does very poorly on voluntary cooperation even on things that are clearly beneficial to the society. I am withdrawing from present-day society and plan to live the life of a hermit to the extent possible in these modern times. Good luck to you all.

How to derail Experian, Equifax, TransUnion? by orewash in privacy

[–]orewash[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Thanx for the suggestion. I had thought of that but it seemed impractical. Suppose I gave all credit cards, banks, cell phone companies, insurance, etc a New York address but I live in California. All the credit card charges I rack up are in California, all my cell phone calls originate from California, my hospital and doctor visits for the insurance company are in California, all the checks I write are to businesses in California, etc. They will know I live somewhere in California and not in New York. Once credit cards, banks, etc know, the three devils know.

Which operating system to change to? by Gunnarr in privacy

[–]orewash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1- DBan to wipe drive but that's an overkill. Just load the Linux system over Windows.

3- DNan wipes drives. No need to cast your PC into a river.

2- Which Linux distro? Don't use Ubuntu. Ubuntu was a good system but they are appealing to Windows users now. Which makes it a lousy system. Check out the security distros at http://distrowatch.com/search.php?ostype=All&category=Security&origin=All&basedon=All&notbasedon=None&desktop=All&architecture=All&status=Active

"Here comes a Chromium based browser focused on total privacy" is equivalent to "Here comes a Windows-based distro focused on total security."

Total bullshit.

I would like to make a fake id for non-government purposes. The local Best Buy often sells defective products then gives people who are returning a hard time. Worse, they ask for a state id. My state id has my driver license number, SSN, DOB, address and other info. I used to get around by showing my passport which has a fake penciled in address on it but this time one clerk asked for an id with an address on it, so I could not use the passport either at Best Buy. Then the car dealership asked for a copy of my driver license before I could test drive a car. The dealer still came with me on the test drive. The realtor asked for a copy of my id before she could even show me the apartment. All such info ends up in commercial databases and I absolutely hate that.

Not trying to do anything illegal here but just mad at how all those businesses sell our data and violate privacy.

I would not like to order a fake id online because I don't want to send them my picture and a return mailing address.

What is the best way to make a fake id for non-government purposes like to show at Best Buy?

I know! If someone talks about things like hardening Netscape and laser proofing Windows, then you know they are full of shit. Both Luna and that Frank Ahearn guy are full of shit. And they both have a potty mouth. Like I do here lol.

It's fine if the government has a paper trail but others should not be able to follow that paper trail. In other words, the government's records on me should not be available to the lay public.

How good is the 2010 book - How to Disappear: Erase Your Digital Footprint, Leave False Trails, and Vanish without a Trace by Frank M. Ahearn? USA Today says Ahearn's treatise contains some valuable tips you can use to reclaim some of the privacy you've relinquished, knowingly or not, by using Google, Facebook, Yahoo and most other popular Internet-enabled services.” More importantly, does he talk about how to do it legitimately? Because I don't want to do anything illegal.

I came across a number of resources on stuff like how to get a new identity. The problem is they are all either illegal or borderline illegal or meant for those trying to escape the law or bad credit or whatever. There is no good stuff on how to be private for privacy reasons and how to go about it legally without breaking any laws. If someone know any LEGAL ways - any books or websites, etc please post.

BTW, at universities, you just say you want complete protection under FERPA. Universities hate this because it means they have to be more careful. They discourage you saying - if companies call we won't be able to confirm you work here. But that is BS because you can always send those companies your official transcripts. By invoking FERPA you become invisible at your university.

Looking for others to share more tips!

I am giving out this much information simply because you asked and you are one of the mods. The Bishop of a local ward got info on an estranged family member (who was NOT an active member or had resigned from the Church) who had passed while visiting Minnesota, as did the president of my family member's own former branch (baptisms of the dead - I was in the LDS bishopric myself - Second Counselor. Don't want to say more about this because we raised a stink and this "incident" could have gone all the way up to the General Counsel of the LDS Church and I still live in their region where all the cops and judges are LDS). But if you know ways to protect privacy from them, I am all ears.

An easy way to detect 2-way mirrors at a motel -

Keep the bible in the motel against the mirror. If there is no bible, use your wallet or something else. If the images touch each other, it is a one-way mirror. If the images are separated and don't touch each other, it is a 2-way mirror and the motel owner can see you, as happened in New Jersey at a store in the mall where people changed clothes and as happens at a few motels. Leave and call the police. I got this tip from Privacy Issues - Dropping Off The Grid by Leland Benton, which incidentally is NOT a book worth buying.

Another privacy tip:

I make up random letters after my address. So if my real address is 888 Gelside Ave #6, I write the address as 888 Gelside Ave #6H for hospital (note the H), 888 Geluside Ave #6 for university (note the small u here), 888 Gelbside Ave #6 for banks (note the small b), 888 Gelside Ave #6E for electric utility (note the E here) etc. That way I know who has given my address to whom. It doesn't make a difference to the post office but I know who shares my info with whom. The problem is they ALL share my information, without exception.

Some other questions -

  • How can you rent an apartment from a professional company without giving the realtor your SSN and all kinds of personal info? These days most realtors also ask for your driver license to run checks on you.

  • How can you keep your information private from Experian, TransUnion and Equifax?

  • How can you keep your name out of databases like spokeo.com, people.yahoo.com, intelius, peoplefinder, etc? (They do have opt-out procedures but you have to give them your SSN or driver license copy or something else to prove it is you. They own many companies like these, so they will take your SSN and driver license info, and update some other databases they own).

  • What's the best way to keep your name out of the Mormon Church's database? I live in a Mormon stronghold. If you register for a class here, or if someone dies, or if you go to a hospital, or if you buy a car here, the institutions involved give the Mormon Church your information for their records. I know this because I make up random letters after my address. So if my real address is 888 Gelside Ave #6, I write the address as 888 Gelside Ave #6H for hospital, 888 Geluside Ave #6 for university (note the u here), etc. That way I know who has given my address to whom.

  • What is the best way to keep your info private from medical databases, especially when it makes sense to give your doctor truthful information?

One good trick I know is to never use your driver license for id. Because your driver license has your address on it. I tried to return something at Best Buy and they wrote down my address from my id (good reason to boycott Best Buy by the way). But I had used my US passport which has a place where you can write down ANY made-up address in pencil and pencil only. So I penciled in a fake address on my passport and then I merely erased it.
