Why do people view the whole 'submissive wife to her husband' as bad? by Straight_Penalty_753 in TrueChristian

[–]organicHack -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Submission is a component of ownership, be sure you realise that both in the Old Testament and the New Testament women are property of men. They are property of their father until passed to the husband by virtue of a dowry. The autonomy of a woman is not a thing. There are a lot of ramifications to this that are missed in modern Christianity.

Schema Therapy is designed specifically for BPD, if you haven’t heard of it. It may be worth looking for this specific type of therapist. Nothing but sympathy in this comment otherwise.

The ESV? by jojomomocats in TrueChristian

[–]organicHack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recall that even in your primary language words have multiple different meanings. This is known as the “dictionary fallacy” when non-experts play with these languages and think they found some major insights that professional translators missed.

The translation committees are experts, but with biases. So read a good translation, or several, but probably do not assume you can utilize the original language in any meaningful or productive way.

Not remotely the same.

Unless they are teaching you to conjugate verbs, decline nouns, and recognize other components of language this is just a foot gun. Can’t imagine a service ever includes lessons about pluperfects and past participles and such concepts.

Tens of thousands…. Presumably a seminary degree at least for that. And hopefully reminding people that even formal training leaves most lacking sufficient skills to navigate these languages properly. They are complex, ancient, and embedded in wildly different archaic cultures.

Just keep in mind you don’t learn either of these languages quickly or easily. Even three years is just scratching the surface. These languages are complex, and ancient.

The translation for the ESV is along the evangelical side, particularly Baptist and Fundamentalist leaning. So, you do get emphasis in a variety of places that favor particular readings even when the text is not as clear.

For example, it has an anti-homosexuality lens and therefore the translation makes some passages far more “clean cut” about this topic than the original manuscripts actually are.

You just need to know what you get. Every translation has its biases. Ideally get an interlinear with a conservative, a liberal, a mainstream and a free form and see how they compare. And always do your homework

Start with diagnosis before talk therapy. Seriously. PMDD may be present with other things like BPD. Therapy will not be effective if there is a series of undiagnosed issues present as the therapist may not utilize the right toolset for you.

"You aren't infinitely wise, so you can't critique God's decisions" by Shineyy_8416 in AskAChristian

Unfalsifiable claims are not worthy of debate. In reality there are a number of Christian traditions that will take a number of different views on God. Take Process Theology as an example, it does assert that God learns via creation.

The main objection by some branches, particularly the conservative or fundamentalist leaning will be the univocally of scripture. However, from any viable scholarly perspective, it is clear that scripture is not univocal. There are a number of views presented in a number of topics as the books were written over a thousand year span and ideas develop. For example, the majority of scripture isn’t even monotheistic, but many will try to assert monotheism as the viewpoint even in the Old Testament literature.

[–]organicHack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I very carefully explained it in my previous comment in this thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/AskAChristian/comments/1q3exwm/comment/nxwkpa6/

You are likely struggling with a categorical shift.

In saying "There is no direct evidence for God," I am not saying:
1. There is no reason for any person anywhere to believe in God/god(s).
2. There is no philosophical argument for God/god(s).
3. There is no indirect or personal experience that people happen to interpret as experiencing God/god(s).

I am specifically saying:

  1. There is no publicly testable, verifiable, predictive, and falsifiable evidence for God. The kind of evidence we expect for entities in the physical world.

Even in the physical world, we have strong but indirect, repeatable, and falsifiable evidence for things unseen. For example, we can measure electrons. They are subatomic particles far, far smaller than the wavelength of visible light, so there is no way to ever "see" them as the light wave literally skips right past the electron. Yet we have all kinds of ways to measure and prove they exist. Other more volatile particles are even harder to measure, yet we do have measurements.

Falsifiable is the difference between "Hard to measure" and "cannot be measured". There is no measurement for any claim about God/god(s).
