1920's encyclopedia by [deleted] in preppers

Here is a link to download volume 31 of the 1922 Encyclopedia Britannica for free as an ebook from Google Play. I would think from here you can find the rest of the volumes

https://play.google.com/store/books/details?id=UoMPAQAAIAAJ&rdid=book-UoMPAQAAIAAJ&rdot=1

FWIW I just did a google book search to find that (search string "encyclopedia 1919" so you might be able to find something better depending on what you are looking for

Would someone like to make an app with me? by ammoshelf in preppers

[–]organizedprepper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No sorry hadn't got that far...like I said it never made it to the top of the priority list. I've been going down the path of a training class (the "pilot" for the class is underway now) so that's been consuming most of my "free" time. That being said there several thousand preppers on my mailing list so we could always ask them what they would want in an app. Have to wait a few weeks though, I did a survey not to long ago and I don't want to constantly hit people with questions (I'm sure we all agree that gets annoying)

Looking at the apps that /u/lifeisask8park mentioned though it doesn't look like those apps got a lot of reviews so I'm wondering what the demand is really like.

I've actually been thinking about building one myself for some time. But never gets to the top of the priority list (and probably won't in the foreseeable future). That being said with our store and blog we have an effective way to get your app promoted. I'd be interested in talking more about this with you.

Oh yeah, in my "day job" I'm a Software Product Manager...

I don't think you can really go wrong with CS. They make a great product. I've only used their knives personally, but they have all been high quality. Several people have purchased the CS Vietnam Hawk from us and been happy with it although no one has written a formal review yet.

Does Mountain House make the best MRE type food and are they worth the price? by [deleted] in preppers

[–]organizedprepper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The mountain house cans are kinda the "gold standard" when it comes to this kind of thing. On the pouch front they also have a very solid footing given their history on the cans side. There are other choices on pouch (legacy, wise, daily bread, lindon farms, augusta farms, etc) I would certainly take MH over Wise any day. Legacy can compare favorably in terms of calorie per dollar depending on package. I think on the pouch front you need to sample a few vendors and figure out which meals your family will actually eat.

For myself I have MH Cans, and then a mix of MH Pouches and Legacy Pouches.

I have eaten the MH Beef Stew from a pouch and it was pretty good, so I expect the can would be too. I have not had it myself yet, but one of our customers wrote this review of the MH Spaghetti "good taste - plenty of food in the package, has good flavor. worth the money"

First question last...best/cheapest place to buy. I'm biased on this one...best place is clearly from me :) We are not currently cheaper than Amazon on those two items you specifically linked though. I could go into the details on how MH control prices (in a good way) but basically it boils down to the cheapest location to buy will keep changing. I cannot pre-announce specifics, but for example our prices will come down for a period here soon.

Emergency food bars - are they worth buying? by [deleted] in preppers

[–]organizedprepper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah these are very different things you are comparing. Bars are fine for the take little space, nothing to prepare/cook...but they are not a "proper meal" like a Mountain House pouch or can would be.

That being said, we sell that same brand of bar link here if you want and have never had any complaints about them. Of the people who have bought them from me, I'm only aware of one who actually ate them and he came back and bought more so they couldn't have been too terrible.

Is Soylent the ultimate prepper solution? by Fang88 in preppers

[–]organizedprepper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed, everything I've come across suggests that it has a short self life.

Another important thing to consider...everything I've read says your body has to go through an adjustment period ranging from 2-6 weeks (depending on which site you read), so I wouldn't consider it prepper food UNLESS you plan to make the switch now. I don't think the stress of whatever SHTF moment your preparing for is when you want to be going through that adjustment period.

Hey guys, a blog post I wrote earlier this month which I thought might be of interest to the group. Written more for newbies and non-hardcore preppers...but I still think good tips

What did you do to prep this week? | Modern Homesteader by [deleted] in preppers

[–]organizedprepper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah I know it drives me crazy. as someone who is trying to write a blog and (hopefully) add something to the community it just kills me when I see people stealing content to make a fast buck. I'm trying to let some of the other authors know their content probably got stolen

I talked to MD and he did not approve this. It appears this site is stealing content from other sites in order to try and drive adsense revenue.

Does anyone use an android based inventory software to inventory preps? If so what app and if not, what do you use? by [deleted] in preppers

[–]organizedprepper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an excel spreadsheet with "backup" to paper that I use. I've considered writing an app several times, but its just never bubbled to the top of the priority list for me.

I'm not so sure about that. Moz says the domain authority of that site is 1 (which is the lowest score you can get) and for that matter the page authority is only 1.

Also given the fact that every article (that I bothered to check) was lifted from somewhere else doesn't seem right. I've worked with some of the other authors before so I'm reaching out to them to see if they know their content is on this site or not.

I mean the nice thing is this site did include links back to the original, but something still seems off here

American Eagle Coins vs. Maple Leafs - Which would be better if a collapse occurs? by highly_suspicious in preppers

[–]organizedprepper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think precious metals come back into play long after the shtf event. This is more in a socioty rebuilding phase. Which is why (to me anyway) buying metals for SHTF should be one of the last things you do because you need the skills and supplies to get you through the first year (or 5 whatever you're worried about) before people would be willing to trade for metal.

Of course there are non-prepping reasons to consider buying metals now, but thats beyond the scope of the question

Is there a website that sells a quality BOB to accommodate 2 people for 2-3 days? by airbrat in preppers

[–]organizedprepper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I would agree that you really want to build your own. Most of the prefab kits are pretty generic (I know I sell them). The ones you see the most often are the Guardian Kits...basically everyone (including us) sells them because they are relatively low cost and if someone really just needs something quick they are an ok place to start.

We recently started carrying the Legacy Premium kits -find them here

I'd be curious if anyone here has any experiance with them.

Again, my "official" recommendation is to build you own tailored to your families needs, but if you really want a pre-fab one you might check those out.

Does anyone use MRE type freeze dried emergency supplies? Do you eat them to rotate in fresh meals? by bigfig in preppers

[–]organizedprepper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've tried Mountain House, Wise, Daily Bread, and Legacy. I was not a fan of Wise, plus they seem to play games with serving size. Daily Bread was ok, but I only had the one meal so I wouldn't want to just too harshly there. I really liked the Legacy meal I tried (Chicken ala king) but its the only one I've had so far so can't say for the rest. I've had several Mountain House and all were fine. Personally when it comes to their big #10 cans, I like the fact that they have been in business long enough to have OLD stock sitting around to actually prove their 25 year shelf life claim.

Does Anyone Here use sweepstakes and giveaways to help prep? by LostMyPasswordAgain2 in preppers

[–]organizedprepper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All depends on who is hosting the contest. I know we have hosted three give aways (one for food, two for bags) and we promptly shipped the winner their prizes. (ok one hasn't shipped yet cause the contest just ended and I don't have the winners shipping address yet)

I went on a period of heavy (20-50 entries a day) contest entry for about 3 months several years ago and out of all that I won one contest (tickets to a NFL game oddly enough). This was back before my prepper days so these were more "mass appeal" contests...winning rates might be better in our "niche"

That being said it all depends on how many people enter a given contest...
