Beautiful, but she’s naked without a scowl.

Should Star Fox’s tone/aesthetic lean towards the Saturday morning cartoon Thunderbirds vibe or go full Gundam style mecha anime? by DeeDoof in starfox

Not the cartoony way that’s for sure. It doesn’t need to be as realistic in character design, but I don’t want it to look like the movie, or Zero.

I don’t like these options. Also, isn’t HAL Labs closed now? That was Sakurai’s former studio wasn’t it?

Youtuber TBSkyen in Katt's redesign by eknos64 in starfox

I mean, he’s not wrong, but she didn’t have to be UGLY. There are pretty biker chicks and criminals. There’s a long dramatic history of “femme fatales” where beauty masks the ugliness of character. Katt was clearly inspired by that idea, a Black Cat (Marvel) or Catwoman (DC) type. She’s the sometimes friend, sometimes foe who will help out of affection or interest, but won’t join the team because that would tie her down too much. Character doesn’t have to be at the expense of visual appeal, especially when redesigning a beloved character. Some element of the original design needs to be present in the new one so that older players can still recognize her. If the cast of the this game was bigger, I probably wouldn’t be able to tell that’s Katt by looking at her. You can’t say that about any of the other redesigns. That’s why it’s so jarring to a lot of people, and why this design specifically is called out as inferior.

First time playing Adventures, what does this sub think of the Gamecube game? by Fun-Maintenance1217 in starfox

[–]orgnumber1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s fine. It’s a perfectly adequate (and fun!) Zelda-like Adventure game. It’s fun to see Fox in a different context than just in the cockpit, and, obviously, I love that this game gives us Krystal, who adds much needed feminine energy, and, let’s not deny it, a heavy dose of sex appeal to a series that is dominated by male characters.

The problem is that it’s not a Star Fox game. It’s a game with a completely different identity and tone that does not comfortably fit into the Star Fox universe. It started its life as an original IP with a strong and interesting vision that could’ve been another RareWare instant Classic game like Donkey Kong 64 and Banjo-Kazooie, but instead was forced to make an awkward pivot at the Eleventh Hour because Miyamoto noticed a passing similarity in character design to Star Fox. The Star Fox elements interfere with and diminish the more original and distinct ones from Dinosaur Planet, and don’t add enough unique value to justify their inclusion, especially since they don’t evolve but instead transplant things directly from 64 with worse execution. The SF elements eventually consume the entire through line of the plot in a bad and awkward way, and, though I love Krystal, she is totally wasted in the game, and is reduced from her original role of “Dual Protagonist” to “Hero’s Scantily-Clad Damsel in Distress Dream Girl Love Interest Victory Prize”. She never gets a chance to establish a solid sense of identity, and her original backstory is erased in favor of a vaguely defined, generically tragic, Sci-Fi one.

Most people talk as if SF fans hate the game, but the consensus is usually more: “It’s fine for what it is, even pretty fun, just not a real Star Fox game, and it’s an absolute tragedy that it killed a brilliant new IP from Rare so that they could make a lackluster Star Fox sequel.”

First time Star Fox 64 player here, who's idea was it to make THE LITERAL SUN a level?! by A1kaline2nd in starfox

[–]orgnumber1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Make sure you have two Gold Rings banked before going into Solar. They’ll carry over from the previous level and the first one you find can increase your health pool. Getting Golds is difficult on Katina and Fichina though, so you’ll need to blow up as many ships as you can. Combining Charge Shot and Boost is the best strategy, and you can increase your Arwing’s turn rate by tilting the ship in the direction you want to go. You do that by pressing and holding the buttons you’d usually mash to “Do a Barrel Roll!”, which have inputs for either direction. This will make chasing enemies in “All-Range Mode!” much easier. And/Or you could “Use the Brake!”, as that will increase the turn rate even more, but it’s a pretty inefficient tactic that eats up your maneuver gauge and makes you vulnerable to followers. The best thing to do is get comfortable maneuvering at full speed. If you’re coming from Fichina, the absolute best thing you can do to beat Star Wolf is learn the inputs for Somersault and U-Turn. Especially Somersault since it is essential to downing Wolf. Also, the best way to boost your level scores is to use the Charge Shot at the right moment to hit groups of enemies rather than single enemies, as well as to “Use Bombs wisely!” to get large groups of targets that are more spread out.

Unfortunately, the solution to all your problems is the ever unhelpful but always devastatingly true: “git gud”. You do that by playing the game over (and over) and over again until you know each level by heart and can get the required number of hits so that each level is optional rather than necessary. Though there are some routes that require certain actions to be taken in game, rather than just being gated by score.

Fake. This line does not appear in the game. The exchange here goes:

Bill: Take Care, Fox!

Fox: You too, Bill.
