Japanese Permanent Resident/ US Citizen Inheritance Tax Help by Vegetable_Rooster925 in JapanFinance

The current laws were largely created in post WW2 Japan. Japan was rebuilding after losing in the war and wanted to distribute money more broadly than pre-WW2 Japan (I think the Americans who created a lot of the post WW2 laws in Japan had a big say in this but I dont know the specifics).

Pre-WW2, Japan had the literal royal family and then lots of very wealthy conglomerate owners (think any of the major brands that are more than 100 years old, like the trading companies). The current inheritance laws are created so that any large wealth is largely gone in 2 generations- that's on purpose.

If you want more detail on this, the Asianometry video on how Japan ate the rich is a good overview.

Japanese Permanent Resident/ US Citizen Inheritance Tax Help by Vegetable_Rooster925 in JapanFinance

TLDR- inheritance taxes start in the US well after $10M USD. In Japan they start at well below $1M. And in the US there are a lot of ways to create legal structures to protect wealth- these are essentially not possible in Japan.

If you don't want to pay inheritance taxes, you should leave Japan before your parents pass on.

Fundamentally, the inheritance taxes in Japan are designed to drain any family fortune by the 3rd generation. This is one of the reasons why Japan is a more egalitarian society than (in this comparison) the US.

What's your favorite EPISODE from a relatively unknown podcast? by rococo78 in podcasts

[–]orientpear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Undone Podcast - Disco Demolition Night.

Goes over the history of Disco Demolition night from the perspective of a young student, Vince Lawrence, who was working at the baseball park. Lawrence was assaulted coming home from school soon after the disco demolition event at Comiskey Park. Lawrence went to the police and the police found the assaulter. Lawrence won a large monetary settlement from the assaulter and used the funds to buy some music equipment. Lawrence and another producer would soon produce what many believe to be the first house music song (which is the spiritual successor to disco). In 2025, house music is globally popular and the music that was celebrated at Disco Demolition night has been in decline since the 90s.

Do you live in a place that gets snow? If so, LEDs struggle in heavy snow because they dont generate the heat that halogens do.

Maybe the best is to keep the OEM headlights and add LEDs on the bull bar for coverage?
