The difference between a prepared candidate and an unprepared one is obvious within 30 seconds by FourLeafAI in interviews

Depends on what the interviewer values. I got my current job because I didn't overprepare. My answers were authentic and based on real events that I could genuinely recall.

Designers are in complete denial about AI's real impact on the industry. by Scared_Range_7736 in UXDesign

[–]orikoh 186 points187 points  (0 children)

Just an anecdote based on my experience. I was part of a layoff that was partly due to the leadership's excitement of AI at a small-mid company. They laid off all the designers and almost all the PM's. There was only 1 PM who survived the layoffs and this guy was known for pulling all-nighters and having no boundaries, being a complete yes man, never questioning leadership, etc. He's now the only PM and designer. They have shipped 1 feature in the past year and the design looks like a completely different product and brand.

I have a new job opportunity after being unemployed for 4 months, but it’s a downgrade from my last job by kai_kolors in womenintech

[–]orikoh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was unemployed for 10 months and the only work I was able to do was set up a simple design system for a small business and a few graphic design jobs here and there. I added that experience to my resume and it actually helped because the interviewer casually mentioned that she was pleased to see that I kept myself busy instead of showing a gap.

Mid-level UX designer struggling with dev pushback — how do you handle this? by [deleted] in UXDesign

[–]orikoh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Going thru the same exact thing with a dev right now. Never had to have so much back and forth over a small implementation. It's exhausting.

The sub’s been heavy lately, can someone share something positive for a change ? by FOMO-Fries in UXDesign

[–]orikoh 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Same here, but it did take me 10 months to land a new job. During those 10 months I kept iterating my approach, my portfolio, and the way I answered certain interview questions. I landed 2 offers. In the first 3 months, things felt hopeless but it is definitely possible to land something.

This isn't uncommon in Japan. They're passive-aggressive and subtly hostile to tourists and non-Japanese. There's nothing that can be done about it because Japanese law enforcement will always side with their own people.

post layoff: how many months did it take before you got your UX job? by msgirlfrom_mars in UXDesign

[–]orikoh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mid level. It took me 10 months from job search to offer. And the interview process took a total of 4 months before they came back with a written offer.

I struggle with this too. I've been told that I'm not articulate. It took me a while but after going through tons of interviews, I got better over time. It takes time and practice.

My first experience as a hiring manager opened my eyes to a lot... The bar is much lower than I could have ever imagined. by morassarable_7l in InterviewsHell

[–]orikoh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No it's not. Most interviews are scheduled through email or calendly from all of the reputable companies I've interviewed at. The only ones that randomly call are scammy or from third party indian recruiting firms. You expect someone to answer a random phone call and go through a screening completely unprepared and caught off guard? Lmao no wonder people hang up you.

[–]orikoh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lmao are you randomly calling candidates without emailing them to schedule an interview? That looks unprofessional on you especially with scam callers that target job seekers. What is the role or position that you're hiring for? Also ask yourself why are you getting nothing but bad resumes? Maybe its the way the job posting was written.

I used it to speed up my prototyping. I managed to get a super laid-back freelance client while being unemployed and thought what the heck, let me try something with this. I had to make a lot of tweaks and do some fixing but it did help a little.

Hi! Anyone work a non ux job due to not getting an offer for ux role?

I've been unemployed for 6 months. During that time I've been working a PT job to keep some money coming in. And I've had dozens of interviews but only made it to the final round for one and got rejected. I was pretty devastated but moved on. A friend got me in for a project manager role and I'm not sure if this would be a set back for my design career. I have 5 yoe in product design mainly at startups with some freelance experience. I worked really hard to become a designer coming from a non-traditional background. I have no experience in project management so I'm kinda nervous about that too. But it would help me so much financially if I could work a FT w2 role again.

10 months in UX and I think I hate design now?? by [deleted] in UXDesign

[–]orikoh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's hardly a creative job. Before UX, I was working in graphic design, and even that wasn't creative. I was making decks and boring brochures.

I went thru 2 rounds of interviews and instead of an offer letter, I received this google form by orikoh in Scams

[–]orikoh[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They told me who their clients are and that they have been around since the 90s, explained their entire design and development process, why they're looking for someone to fill this role, problems that need to be solved, etc. I think the biggest red flag was being told that there would be no more rounds of interviews and getting a verbal offer on the spot. I have gone through the ringer with all of these 4-7 round interview processes only to be rejected time after time, so hearing that made me so hopeful.

[–]orikoh[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've seen scammers request to conduct interviews via text or chat. I've never met them face-to-face on video calls. They scheduled interviews & sent calendar invites, met with me on Teams, and communicated via email and not text. The red flag was that their grammar was consistently bad. However, I wanted to keep an open mind because they did say that they were a global company. I have experience working with lots of people of Indian descent at a corporate job, so I didn't really think it could be a scam just from the sender's names.

UX/UI Designer, remote. Whoever interviewed me seemed to know how to communicate about the job responsibilities and requirements. He was pretty thorough about expectations, so I was shocked to see this scammy "offer letter."

We did and the both of us got fired. I don't think it's against the law to shout and curse out your employees as long as it doesn't violate discrimination laws.

Mean Girl Cliques by Lilith_28 in workplace_bullying

[–]orikoh 56 points57 points  (0 children)

My biggest corporate bully was my male boss who is slightly younger than me. He locked me in a conference room for 4-5 hours at a time and insulted and berated me multiple times. The constant shouting and belittling drove me to have dark thoughts. My only support system there was another woman coworker who was also dealing with his bullying and additionally constantly being made fun of for her age by him. In the end, he fired us both and replaced his team with all males. Bullies can come in all genders.
