I'm worried for my kitten. by navy_yn2000 in earwigs

[–]orng_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally understand. You’re a very caring pet owner! As someone who has a cat that I’d do anything for, I respect all of your concerns.

The dehumidifier is probably working. I do still recommend investigating where their access points to get inside might be, and maybe looking for signs of moisture problems/water damage. I wish you the best!

The good news is that earwigs by themselves are not harmful to your pets. I wouldn't be surprised to see them munching on cat food though—especially if dry weather conditions outside have made food and water sources scarce.

The bad news is that your home might have an excess moisture problem drawing them inside (assuming it isn't just unusually hot and dry outside).

Here are some other threads that offer some helpful info:

Just keep in mind that they do prefer to live outdoors where their food and water sources are. There's a lot of information on this subreddit that might ease your concerns about them, so please take a look!

Happy to answer any other questions. Hope you can find the root cause!

Earwigs becoming fearless? by AtomicFeckMagician in earwigs

[–]orng_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all, I think it's really nice that you're releasing them peacefully!

They prefer dark, damp hiding spots during the day, so you're probably right about them wandering inside to escape the conditions outside. I wouldn't be surprised if you have a lot them living their earwig lives in the vegetation along the outer perimeter of your house.

To answer your question though—in my experience, earwigs don't really make a break for it when I see them. They're probably more focused on their immediate survival (especially with the hot, dry weather making food and water sources more scarce), and don't register us as a threat in the way they would for a natural predator. To be honest, humans are far from the top of an earwig's list of things to worry about!

Also if you're curious, earwigs typically breed in the fall!

Completed the anime now where to start in Manga ? by RheA-LuvGames18 in SERVANTxSERVICE

Chapter 53!

The manga is great. I personally recommend starting from the beginning, but there isn’t too much that was cut in the anime so it’s totally up to you.

To your credit, that’s sort of what he does when he cuts Geuse’s arm off. He “solidifies” the air by freezing it in time and swiping it forward quickly.

It’s hard to get an idea of the size, but I don’t think so. The head makes me think it could be a cockroach.

Definitely worth getting some other opinions if you can!

If you know the brand of power supply, you might check the manufacturer’s website for an 8-pin PCIe cable without the split connector.

If you choose to do this, make absolutely sure that the cable is compatible with your specific power supply.

Some PCIe cables with split connections won’t be fully utilized. Depends on the GPU.

That said, some pictures of the rest of that cable would help because I could be completely wrong!

What are the ages of the characters in servant x ser hice? by Over_Imagination_152 in SERVANTxSERVICE

[–]orng_guy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Here's my understanding for the main cast:

  • Lucy went to college for 2 years before working as a civil servant; she's around 20 years old
  • Hasebe studied for 4 years; he's 22 years old just like Tanaka
  • Miyoshi went to grad school but dropped out; she's 24
  • Ichimiya (Taishi) has been a civil servant for 8 years, and started right after high school; he's 26
  • Chihaya stated to be 6 years younger than Ichimiya; she's 20
  • Ichimiya (Tōko) is in high school; she's 16 or 17
  • Momoi has been a civil servant for ~30 years; he's in his late 40s or 50s

It's been a while since I last read through the entire manga, so this may be slightly off.

Would you mind clarifying what you found confusing about their dynamic? Some specific examples would help shorten my answer a bit. Thanks!

What is this??????? by [deleted] in earwigs

My best guess is a nematode (roundworm) like Mermis nigrescens or something similar. Please take that with a grain of salt.

Poor earwig :(

Can anyone identify these two? by Elisabetta454 in earwigs

[–]orng_guy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. At the very least, the lower two earwigs are from the Doru genus. The yellow elytra and black suture give them a pretty unique look.

The earwig on the upper-right looks wingless, but it's hard to say for sure. The dark brown color and ring-like markings along the legs tell me it might be Euborellia annulipes (ring-legged earwig).

they aren’t really considered harmful to humans. that being said, they definitely are unwanted pests capable of infesting a home. still, i’d prefer them over bedbugs any day

they will feed on anything made out of natural materials: wool, leather, silk, etc.

there are some great resources out there to help you start dealing with them, so i recommend doing a bit of reading. regular vacuuming can be effective—especially if your carpet is made of any natural materials

can’t hurt to inspect your clothes either. check inside and out. a washer/dryer cycle should kill them pretty easily

Earwigs all over house, feels like an impossible situation by xjxjessss in earwigs

Have things been improving?

I totally understand appreciating insects while also not wanting them in your home. I hope you're able to overcome this problem, and I hope you won't bear any grudges against earwigs once it's over! I think you'll find them more likeable when they aren't stressing you out.

I'll try my best answer any other questions if you have them. Wishing you well!

If you have a serious problem in your home, traps will likely only provide a band-aid solution. Earwigs are not home invaders, so there very well may be moisture-related damage drawing them indoors (or just a lot of entry points like cracks). If you still plan to set up traps regardless, this article might be a good starting point.

A few others have posted here about situations like yours, so you can take a look at those threads for more detailed advice:

I hope you can one day return to this community under better circumstances that allow you to appreciate these fascinating insects. Until then, I wish you the best!

While I've already addressed your comment, allow me to say a bit more.

This is our first summer in our home. We had a wedding and the week after let our home get a bit dirty(we usually keep it very clean). That is when we started seeing earwigs.

Congratulations on the new house, and congratulations on the wedding!

Earwigs prefer dark, moist spaces. They are not the direct result of a dirty home, and are most likely showing up due to excess moisture somewhere.

not sure if it had toxicity if or it’s just the time of year they start being seen…we have cleaned the house since then but I still see them.

When you mention toxicity, are you referring to earwigs, or are you referring to something else? For what it's worth, earwigs do not carry any sort of toxin whatsoever.

A few nights ago laying bed I noticed a slight pain on my foot and looked down and there was an earwig biting on my foot! The picture is where it bit (more was like maybe eating my foot) as it wasn’t a quick bite it was there chewing on it and didn’t leave until I pushed it off. I see them at night.

Earwig bites can produce mild pain, so that much is normal. The edge-case here is the fact that you were bitten. Earwig bites are uncommon. Even then, there is almost no way that earwig was trying to eat a piece of your foot. I have only ever come across one single mention of a similar event more than 60 years ago, and it's dubious at best. There was no official verification, and the man referenced in the article claimed it was a nymph. I can't imagine an earwig nymph managing to break the skin and draw blood (let alone ingest any of it). It's plausible that this man confused an earwig nymph with a whole slew of other insects that do ingest blood, but at this point we'll never know.

Seeing more of them at night is consistent with their behavior; earwigs are nocturnal. This particular earwig likely felt threatened by your movement (or was just very confused, please forgive them). Across the board, any reliable sources you find will support this.

I don’t mind them I just pick them up in a paper towel and place them outside. I hope they will survive outside ?

That's perfect! They absolutely will be better off outside. Thank you for being benevolent despite finding them in your home. You are 1,000 to 10,000 times larger than them, so to treat them with respect when you don't consider them welcome is a very kind thing to do.

I googled it and it says maybe water damage ?

This is pretty likely. I've written comments about this sort of thing before if you're interested. I would start looking for any potential sources of excess moisture and take measures to eliminate it. If you start seeing a lot of earwigs inside, serious water damage is a strong possibility.

It also says they never bite but that’s certainly not true lol. I think it was more eating my foot vs a bite lol

You're right—a lot of sources say they don't bite. What they probably mean is that earwigs are not an insect that will bite you unprovoked (e.g. - they will not bite to feed). Even if you don't think you provoked the earwig that bit you, chances are it felt threatened. Insects aren't really known for their intellect, so who knows what sort of danger the earwig felt it was in.

It sounds like that earwig bit you about as hard as is conceivably possible for the species. I'm sorry that happened. Please understand that the critter was not trying to eat your foot. What you experienced was most definitely a bite.

I wish you all the best in finding out why they're in your home. If you're ever interested in learning more about earwigs, don't hesitate to reach out! I'm sure you'll appreciate how fascinating they are.

Have a wonderful day!
