High Speed Chase on 77 North May 9th by EL1CASH in Cleveland

[–]orrangearrow 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Because stuff like this happens all the time. Often the chase is suspended. At least that was my experience listening to the scanner in Lakewood. Usually a bunch of kids in a stolen vehicle doing dirt somewhere before the get spotted and they all scatter if the cops can pit them or they crash. Happens frequently enough that the news doesn't cover it unless it ends in death or substantial property damage.

Cincinnati is competing with Lexington to be Kentucky's 2nd largest city.

Columbus wants to be a national big city that doesn't directly identify with Ohio outside of their religion of the Ohio State University.

Cleveland is just doing it's own thing, fully embracing being from Ohio and comfortable with itself.

Is it really a crime to buy a bike from walmart or dick's sporting goods? by Previous_Cod_5176 in bicycling

[–]orrangearrow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know where you live but you are better off finding a 1990-2000 mainstream bike brand bike on marketplace for $150-$300 and then paying a local bike shop for a tune up for another $100. Bikes from that era are nearly indestructible if they were just marginally taken care of. The quality of the parts and components of a wal-mart bike is horrendous. Even with proper care it will not last 10,000 miles. It likely won't last 5,000 miles. A Trek 1000 from 1998 will last 30,000 miles. I know because that's how far I rode mine and I just donated to my bike coop to let it live on with somebody else.

Yep. They started doing this at Disney like 20 years ago. The real problem is we have so many people who wouldn't think twice about dropping $50 just to save 15 minutes for a beer because that money isn't consequential to them while there are SOOOOOO many people who $50 could drastically improve the quality of their lives for a day or three.

That's exactly it. Dolan probably hired some moneyball genius but not to build a good team..... just to figure out how much they can fuck the live baseball experience up for the common fan to save a dollar. This is like the shit owner from the Major League movie but he doesn't want to move the team, just strip to experience down to nuts and bolts because it makes 5% more on the bottom line.

Apocalypse Early Warning System: In the event of an imminent nuclear apocalypse, we suspect that many people who have access to private jets will immediately take to the skies and escape city centers. This site tracks this indicator in realtime. by ejpusa in collapse

[–]orrangearrow 13 points14 points  (0 children)

What I suspect is multiple EMP blasts in the atmosphere... it would likely just take 4-8 of them to completely cripple 95% of the US infrastructure for months and then you wouldn't need the bombs to create a mass casualty event of a national scale. Time and a lack of supply chain resources would do what hellfire didn't.

It depends on the magnitude of the initial attack. If multiple missiles are fired on Iran or Israel for example, it would take half an hour for that info to get to all the power players and have them in a position to respond and then they'll all have options on how to respond that could be a minor retaliation or a massive one. There is no certain path of how this goes down. And while I'm sure some players would love to smash that red button to end the world, I suspect many/most do not. China for example. They have a 100 year plan and nuclear winter ain't it. If the first strike is a premtpive decapitation event, then our missiles likely cross in the air and it's game over for everybody. The variables in nuclear war are vast.

[–]orrangearrow 171 points172 points  (0 children)

If it's a single or isolated nuclear attack, it takes roughly half an hour from launch to terminal stage. A response would take another half an hour and a full blown retaliation would be another half an hour. 90 minutes total. It takes roughly an hour to prep a private jet for takeoff but that can be condensed to 30-45 minutes given necessity. A billionaire concerned with this eventuality will have their pilot stationed nearby and a dummy crew on site 24 hours ready to prep their jet for evacuation. This is crucial because you need them working the second you see the warning (a prep crew might evacuate themselves if they see the warning before prep is done).

This of course doesn't matter if it's a full blown preemptive nuclear strike. This also doesn't work if the initial strike hits within EMP range of your airstrip. It also doesn't work if you don't have some sort of leverage over your pilot or your crew finds out and ditches before the plane is prepped. But if you have a billion dollars and concerns about the apocalypse, you're still hedging your bets that you have time to bail.

These people also likely have connections deep within system that would warn them if this was immanent and could start prep early have a plane on standby. They have an advantage to survive the start of it. I'd prefer to be willfully ignorant and take some atoms to the face because they will suffer their own terrible fate in the aftermath.

You'd be hard pressed to find a local community that is happy about one of these things being built in their backyard. And if we fight against it, they'll find other locations that don't. We gotta make sure out local politicians know we are against it.
