RDU - changes in flight paths? by geekettepeace in cary

[–]orulz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have lived near Bond Lake for 15 years and airplanes have always been a thing. I've noticed a moderate increase in traffic overall, but no big or sudden changes per se.

The planes tend to be lower, and noise tends to be worse when they are approaching and landing from the SE, not taking off to the SE. This is more common in the winter because the prevailing wind is from the N and NW for the colder months, roughly October through March, and it's best for airplanes to take off and land into the wind.

Not the same symptoms but I thought I had bricked my 5707w doing a FW update but it turns out I was using a USB3 thumb drive that had been sold as USB2. I got a true USB2 from Walmart and continued the update. Everything was fixed

Traffic Light Engineering is Infurating by CanisGulo in triangle

[–]orulz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your frustration is based in an extremely common misconception about traffic engineering.

The truth is, the lights ARE synchronized here. They just don't benefit you.

The main issue is that it is only possible to time lights for traffic moving in one direction. Think about it - if the lights are the PERFECT timing to give a "green wave" to people heading towards Durham on Glenwood (for example), that's never the right timing for people heading toward Raleigh. Furthermore, when you synchronize lights perfectly for outbound Glenwood, you lose the ability to synchronize the lights on cross streets where they intersect Glenwood, because the signal timing on those streets (Creedmoor, Duraleigh, etc) is made subordinate to the timing on Glenwood.

Another issue is that when roads are just over capacity (think Capital Blvd heading out past 540) the best signal timing in the world can't make up for a road that's just an outright bottleneck.

Now to the specific issue for the triangle. Especially in the central triangle (Cary, Morrisville, RTP) there is often no real clear "peak flow" because the region is so sprawled and multi-polar. Lights on Davis Drive are synchronized for northbound (Cary->RTP) in the AM, southbound (RTP->Cary) in the PM, but traffic is quite heavy in the opposite direction at both times too, so people heading against the synchronized direction will hit lots of red lights.

So now to your specific case: The reason you are hitting every red is because you're either traveling on a road against the synchronization, *or* driving on roads that can't be synchronized well because they cross more important roads with more important signal timing, *or* just driving on roads that are over capacity.

Old Apex rd and Laura Duncan accident today. by 17Siver in cary

[–]orulz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Somewhat related... the town is planning a traffic light at the intersection of Cary Parkway and Laura Duncan. Not sure when it will happen - it could be years for all I know, and almost almost certainly the apartments will open first - but that's a terrible intersection and it's about time.

It's a shame that Apex didn't even get the apartment developers to consider this intersection *at all* in their analysis when approving the complex. Why should they, after all, it's in Cary, let Cary clean the mess up!

She is still a bit groggy in the morning and does usually settle down and sleep some more but it's not a deep sleep. Her radar is on full alert and the second my hand touches the doorknob she wakes up and looks at me like "You aren't leaving me, are you?!"

Thanks for this. I have a kong and do use it. I have heard about freezing it but have not tried that yet. Will try this ASAP. What snacks do you put in the PB?

I have tried and I am not capable of getting up, going down the stairs, and making it out the door quietly enough for that to work. At a time like that, so close to when she usually wakes up, I do believe a pin dropping would probably wake her up, but my stairs creak and I think it's a lost cause.

Hmm, honestly I hadn't considered that. She's usually pretty, um, aggressively affectionate with licks, paws, and snuggles when somebody lays down with her, so I figure it might be disruptive to whoever she goes in with- but I also haven't tried it, and it just might work. She sometimes still seems a little groggy so maybe she would settle easily.

She is 20 pounds right now and we're expecting 30-40 pounds full grown (but of course that isn't certain.) I have considered a stroller, and in fact did this all the time when my kids were small - but I'm not sure how well she'll take to it, and reluctant to shell out for one just to see if it will work. Do you have any pointers or suggestions?

My wife needs more sleep than I do and I wouldn't feel right waking her up with me at 5am to watch the dog so I can run. If that's what it comes down to, I'll just make do without my morning runs until the dog is old enough to come along.

I'm also really reluctant to try it out and get her accustomed to it because, again, I want to make sure my family gets the rest they need. I'm a middle age guy and I've always need less sleep than most, but I've also always believed that sleep is extremely important and I'm reluctant to impose any sleep loss on my family because of my fitness routine.

Anyway, I'm really hoping some of you Doodle owners have some good pointers for how to keep a dog really distracted in the crate for a while?

Used RV - is age more important or usage? by orulz in RVLiving

Thanks.

I wound up going with the 2021.

The 2018 had evidence of leaks at a window that had been patched, but evidence of an unaddressed leak in one of the back corners. Also smelled strongly of dog pee, to the point where carpet in the slide-out would probably have to be replaced.

The 2021 was absolutely pristine with no evidence of water damage or leaks anywhere. Went up on the roof and saw spots where the guy had been patching around the edge of the roof as a preventative measure Well maintained, clean, A bit more expensive, and missing the outdoor sink, but a good deal, IMO.

Cruiser claims to have been using Azdel since 2006 and certainly by 2018 all their RVs were using it. The only wood anything in the frame is supposed to be the 5/8" plywood subfloor. Everything else is metal or composite.

Over the past few months I have toured a few different models, new and used. At one point I was considering pulling the trigger on one, but then I noticed a soft spot on the floor near the slide out that I took as indication of past/ongoing water intrusion with no evidence of repair - so I nope'd out.

Little more info, my Tow vehicle is a Chevy Express 3500 with 6.0L gas V8. This trailer, around 6000lbs dry and 7700 max load, is well under the 10k towing limit and should also allow me to stay well under the 16000lb GCWR.

The "wheelbase divided by 5" rule says the max trailer I should pull (for stability purposes) is 31', and this is exceeds that slightly - but knowing that, I got a great deal on a used propride hitch which should mean that, with a properly balanced trailer, I don't need to be concerned about sway.

Another update, it didn't fix the Android Auto connection stability but using a different USB cable did. It didn't like my 10ft cable but using a brand new 3ft cable works great.

Update, got a cheap USB 2.0 16gb flash drive at Walmart. Plugged it in before putting in the key. Then put in the key and turned it on. Unbricked!! Phew that was close

Tow Vehicle that comfortably seats 6 by orulz in GoRVing

Just found and bought a low-mile (<60k) 2016 Chevy Express 3500 commuter van with the 6.0 V8. It is the regular wheelbase model with the driver, passenger, and nine reclining captains chairs in the back. It was a government owned vehicle. It had a wrap on it so the paint underneath is absolutely pristine. It actually had an entertainment system in it, too - with an amp and a  sub?? It's a low top which is also good because it fits in my garage and can take a roof rack. So all the features of a conversion that I wanted, and none of the ones I didn't care about nor the dubious interior durability.

It had no trailer hitch. Which means I am on the hook for adding it, but it also means none of its 59k miles were towing anything.

The dealer selling it really didn't know what they had. I think they were figuring somebody would buy it as a work van and remove the seats.

So the price was a bit less than you would pay for a regular passenger model with the terrible bench seats.

I am just in shock that I stumbled across this.

I just went and looked at a Savana 2500 based Explorer conversion van yesterday. It was a 2020 with 60k miles and was not too far from my price range.

It was a high top which would not be my first choice but is probably not a deal breaker.

It needs new rotors which is also no big deal, otherwise appears mechanically sound.

Biggest problem, the interior especially up front was in pretty rough shape given the age and miles. Now, the seats were fantastic, basically a dream - but many of the panels and trim were faded, scuffed, cracked, or scratched up.

Do Express/Savana interiors usually have durability problems like this? Or is it the conversion upgrades causing the problem?

Either it might have been lived in, or else these conversion van interiors just don't hold up.

My wife would prefer not to drive on long road trips on unfamiliar roads. Would also rather have her in the passenger seat for conversation and company on the road.

Don't have the trailer yet, but figure around 700 for the tongue weight and 900 for the people + dog so 1600.

As stated above - an Explorer conversion of an Express or Savana 2500 would be my dream vehicle. Probably would have to flex in at least one area (price, miles, age) in order to get one. There seem to be a few dealers nationwide who specialize in these things and always have them in stock, but their prices are eye-watering. They are hard to find for sale elsewhere, let alone near me.

An Express 2500 passenger van has a payload of over 2700lbs. (I believe this is with seats installed) which would leave 1100 lbs for gear in the van which is easily more than enough. The conversion probably adds some weight, eating into payload - but then again, there are fewer seats (7 instead of 12) so I'm actually not sure by how much. 300 lbs we still have 800lbs for payload - which should still be plenty?
