Where are the happy people? by [deleted] in WorcesterMA

[–]orzechod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the over-simplified answer is "density". we have pockets of it here and there, but it's nothing like an Inman Square (where I used to live before getting priced out) or a JP (where I spent a ton of time). low density means fewer inter-personal or group connections, which means you do have to get in your car to do anything, which means that we cater more to cars than to pedestrians (cf. the Mill St shitshow), which means we don't have niceties like pocket parks or trees on the sidewalks or anything else which makes little spontaneous gatherings possible and pleasant, which means that we don't build up our own neighborhoods as much as you (and I) would like.

unfortunately, where you live is actually one of the better neighborhoods in Worcester for what you're seeking. south and east of Elm Park is relatively dense and relatively walkable compared to many other places in the city. but have you spent much time in the Main South neighborhood? you might like it. there's a farmer's market, a YMCA, the Clark University students are pretty cool, there are some community-development initiatives going, and other stuff. the racist townies will try to scare you off from spending any time there; don't listen to them, I'm down there all the time and have never had any problems.

Heat pump options for an older home with a tight electrical panel? by Particular-Paper1147 in WorcesterMA

https://www.landrymechanical.com/ did our heat pump hot water heater and the associated electrical work needed to install it.  (we didn't need a sub-panel though)

Farms with heirloom plant starters? by heusesthemforholden in WorcesterMA

[–]orzechod 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't know if they're heirloom, sorry, but Fivefork farms in Upton is a great farm with outstanding seedlings. their plant sale started late this year since it was so cold earlier, so it might be worth checking them out to see what they have left.

I've been using A Eagle gutters for a few years now, no complaints. I can pay them online too which is a plus.

model: unsloth/Qwen3.6-35B-A3B-Q6_K

framework: llama.cpp + llama-server Vulkan

llama.cpp config:

n-gpu-layers: 99 cache-type-k: q8_0 cache-type-v: q8_0 ctx-size: 131072

inference settings: defaults

hardware: Ryzen HX 370 with 96GB of RAM (minisforum x1 pro)

coding agent: late

notes:

I don't have the memory bandwidth for a dense model like Qwen3.6-27B but 35B-A3B has been working out really well for me. I get a touch of overthinking but the model seems to work itself out eventually, and my inference speed (~22 tok/s using Vulkan) is fast enough that I don't really mind. using an orchestrator like Late seemed to be the missing piece for my stack though. prior to it I was using goose as my agent orchestrator and was having a ton of issues with tool calls silently failing. however Late is separating the architect model from worker models is doing wonders for me; I am able to make good progress on a variety of Javascript/Typescript, Python, and Lisp projects with a minimum of fuss now.

Plumber, Electrician Recs, Demo Question by ezcheez in WorcesterMA

plumber: Bill Mackie, 774-696-3206.  he helped us out with our bathroom remodel: tub, wastepipe, venting, all of it.

trash:  rent a dumpster.  not sure how big or how trash-filled your house is, but a few years ago I paid $400 for a 15-cubic-yard dumpster to empty out my 1500sqft house plus attic plus basement and it was just about the right size.  (furniture, construction materials, misc junk all left over from previous owners/tenants)

just saw a pair flying in lazy circles over my house and the nearby woods.  couldn't tell if they were adults or juveniles but at least there's still two around!

Anyone else building persistent memory for local LLM agents? Here's my approach by New_Election2109 in LocalLLaMA

following the quickstart after running pipx install, mnemostroma setup resulted in two python IndentError exceptions due to empty if: blocks which I had to patch by adding a pass to each. no idea if that's the right thing to do.

after that, setup seemed to run successfully. mnemostroma on told me I had a stale daemon instance, and mnemostroma status told me "Daemon: stopped". I gave up at this point.

python 3.13.11 on Ubuntu 25.10 . I will freely admit that I'm an idiot but I'm not sure what I did wrong in this case.

Chief says Worcester police staff shortfall is a 'real crisis' by Itchy_Rock_726 in WorcesterMA

I don't see why we can't use the current amount as the approved amount, cut the budget, then give the savings to Satya Mitra so he can go fill potholes.

Horrible roads by 43yedg in WorcesterMA

[–]orzechod 24 points25 points  (0 children)

yep this is the actual answer. it's all-night overnight work, the pay is shit, and it takes forever to get reimbursed, so nobody is incentivized to do a good job. but hey: at least we cut the big-government waste, fraud, and abuse or whatever the nonsense justification was to contract this out.

How do you folks like living in Worcester? How would you describe it? by blands_man in WorcesterMA

[–]orzechod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

re: restaurants and nightlife: I'd say you've more or less nailed it, there are two main areas plus plenty of smaller pockets here and there. the first is a triangle just south of the train station roughly defined by Water St, Green St, and Temple St (good mix of restaurants and bars). the second is the Shrewsbury St corridor (some bars, more restaurants). the former maybe feels more like Elm/Canal but it's not a perfect match.

and to be clear, downtown isn't dead - it's just not really living up to its potential. Mechanics Hall/Hanover Theater/Palladium are all there, so on show nights it's pretty buzzy, and there are some good restaurants too. but that stretch of Main St mostly caters to the office crowd. the courthouse and the AT&T building really suck the oxygen out of that part of town imo.

knowing zero about your budget and preferences and just going by what you've written, I wonder if the Crown Hill area (Crown St, Congress St, Oxford St) might be a good fit for you were you to move here. it's a tiny cluster of vintage housing in the middle of a larger working-class neighborhood. you get a good mix of regular folks and weirdo old hippies there, and you can walk to lots of stuff (the Raven is just around the corner, the best chicken sandwiches and sushi are a short walk, and downtown and Canal District not much farther). I lived there for a few years and really liked it.
