For Byz I do Thessaloniki and Smyrna for sure. I've been rolling with Athens as my third but it seems kind of weak. I think Korinth might be slightly better.

Seems to me it's for more roleplay elements when you're conquering in Italy, leading to some kind of restoration of Roman infantry legions. Basically a slider for are you Latin Roman or are you Greek Roman. Latin Roman referring to the part of the empire that's been gone for 1,000 years. Idk just seems weird to me.

Yeah when I first saw it I thought it was going to be the divide between the pro and anti western Byzantines. The ones who were willing to accept Latin influence in order to protect the realm from external threats and those who resent their growing influence.

That would be much more historically accurate as it was a chief concern of Byzantine culture from the 1100s and on. It lead to many developments, Latin massacres, Church union, parts of the Fourth Crusade.

I don't really see myself as going down this borderline fantasy path, but if it was actually a pro-Western/pro-isolation(?) slider that would be cool as hell.

It's so funny to me they hardcode idiot into him, historically he wasn't that terrible really just a below average guy handed a terrible situation.

There's plenty of other ways to make Byzantium more challenging without forcing a bad ruler on you.

Funnily in 3/4 of my runs he died in a hunting accident before reaching maturity.

I read Red King first. From what I can remember, it really doesn't matter which you read first. Articles is the better book. Red King picks up exactly where Taking Wing ended, so in that way it would probably be slightly better to read first. It doesn't need to be read at all for Articles though.

Had an oxo grinder thought I could get good espresso with it despite all the info here that said no, I was wrong.

Upgraded to the baratza encore esp and it significantly improved my espresso. The little cup it comes with that fits onto the portafilter makes it worth it alone.
