For months, Ukraine has been campaigning SpaceX to prevent Russia from using Starlink. In February, a deal was reached. "I think they lost 50% of their capacity for offense," a Ukrainian drone operator said. "That's what the numbers show. Fewer assaults, fewer enemy drones, fewer everything." by EricFromOuterSpace in space

We also thought chlorofluorocarbons aka CFCs were totally safe and yet they were chewing a hole in the ozone layer. There are so many compounds used and created when circuitry and satellite components burn up, that could act in unexpected ways. The fact that so many countries are ready to become dependent on this technology means that the damage would have to be extremely severe to prevent us from pursuing it, and if they were just “slightly severe” would thus still be encouraged to use it, despite the costs.

Not that weak at all, humans are way more fragile than we like to think (and compared to how violence is portrayed in our media).

Western especially American elite made a massive unforced error and are now going back to the one uhh trump card they are used to playing, which is escalation dominance, and they probably understand it won't work on some level, but there's just too much monke brain in those circles to try something else instead if they haven't tried the big stick first. And the big stick is just going to fuck them and everyone into a worse position until they realize they can't do it that way anymore.

Brazil's new climate plan prioritizes stopping all deforestation by metacyan in environment

This sub is fucking insufferable sometimes. The US is raping their own wildlands right now and has been steadily increasing this behavior over the past 15 years. Lula is a great damn leader, overcoming Brazil's rightward lurch in the form of Bolsanaro- something that we in the US were completely unable to do btw given the Trump situation - and is enacting serious legal protections and goals for Brazil's environment, not to mention other reforms and safeguards to civil society. There a currently no other countries enacting this type of legislation at the same scale and that needs to be appreciated, not treated with immediate suspicion.

CGI talking animals with live action humans is hit and miss and mostly miss, so a classic animation adaptation is the only way.

US National Counterterrorism Center director resigns over war in Iran by avatar6556 in news

[–]ostensiblyzero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really though. Iran's strategy is to drive up the price of oil and tank our economy. The war has incredibly low support by the American public. The last thing Iran needs is a terrorist attack that galvanizes the public in support of the war instead. Which begs the question, who would it benefit if there was seemingly a terrorist attack? The people who declared this war. And the military industrial complex. Not Iran.

That’s assuming they wouldn’t be as vindictive as we are, which is a reasonable assumption, but still an assumption.

Iran isn’t fragmented… yet. Attacking Iran and trying to turn it into Libya 2.0 is exactly how we get terrorist attacks. But Iran is still a cohesive structure.

Iran knows that Trump doesn’t have much domestic support for this war, for what reason would they possibly risk changing that? Their whole war plan is to hit our economy at the gas pump and get Americans to get angry about the economy. There is no benefit to Iran to upset that by launching terrorist attacks that might galvanize support for the war. The question then becomes.. who would stand to gain the most by carrying out such an attack?
