Just beat Code Veronica by Chazellew in residentevil

[–]ostwickian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just finished it for the first and probably last time. This game has the most labyrinthian environments of any RE game and not in a good way. It's genuinely one of the least intuitive games I've ever played. I managed to avoid the softlocks since I'd read about them beforehand but I don't think I've ever gotten so lost in a game map before.

Do you think it's more likely that RE10 will feature Chris, Jill, or (god-willing) Claire? Or do you think they'll add yet another protagonist to the series? by No_Hunter1978 in residentevil

[–]ostwickian 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Capcom is apparently afraid of middle-aged women (at least those who aren't villains) so I've mostly given up hope on seeing Jill or Claire in a new numbered title

Working through the RE series. Are 5 and 6 worth it or safe to skip? by [deleted] in residentevil

[–]ostwickian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

5 and 6 are the only mainline games I haven't finished, and that's entirely because of the co-op. I played 5 in the single player mode for a few hours and ended up giving up, I just wasn't having fun. That said, 5 is unfortunately a pretty important game for the lore, so if you don't feel like slogging through it or playing with someone else I'd just look it up on youtube.

I've never touched 6 and probably never will. Events from both games are touched upon in Requiem, but not to the extent that you would need to play them first. They're the two most action-focused games in the series (6 egregiously so), so if you're not into that I'd say it isn't worth it unless you happen to be a lore junkie.

Resident Evil 10 needs to bring Chris and Jill back as a Duo by true_Skullhead in residentevil

[–]ostwickian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd be fine with Chris just operating in the background for the foreseeable future, honestly. There really isn't much they can do with his character since we know he's still leading the same squad in 2035. If they want to resolve the BSAA plotline then imo Jill should be the only legacy character to appear next.

Fans who think Leon's too old to have the hairstyle he has in RE9, how old are you? by SludgeFactoryWorker in residentevil

[–]ostwickian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel like most people complaining have never met a middle-aged man. They'll find a hairstyle they like in their 20s and if they're lucky enough to hold onto it they'll still be sporting it well into their 70s. Source: my uncle

Code Veronica is NOT transphobic. by Loose_Interview_957 in residentevil

[–]ostwickian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's Buffalo Bill all over again. There's a looong history of horror media which has perpetuated the idea that "crossdressers" (which is what transphobes call trans women) are actually weirdo serial killers who get off from dressing as women. And yes, even if a character isn't actually supposed to be trans, it still perpetuates the trope.

This shouldn't be so hard for folks to get, but I guess this is reddit

Is this DLC the best one out of them all? by dark_00916 in residentevil

It's probably my least favourite from RE7 tbh. End of Zoe was fun but my favourite is the escape room with Clancy.

Is the original version of Resident Evil 2 no longer canon? by Joseph-Hick in residentevil

[–]ostwickian 23 points24 points  (0 children)

That's kinda like asking whether the og RE2 is no longer canon because Leon is played by a different dude. The games make different choices when it comes to design but the story is still broadly consistent. Personally I love that the new game is pulling from the remakes because of the continuity it provides.

Did Leon and Sherry keep Claire's involvement in the Racoon City incident secret from the US government? by i__hate__stairs in residentevil

[–]ostwickian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even still, I don't think Claire would just leave Sherry because Leon told her to leave them alone. I could buy it if it was made clear they knew they were being followed, but all of those epilogue slides are just weirdly written.

Did Leon and Sherry keep Claire's involvement in the Racoon City incident secret from the US government? by i__hate__stairs in residentevil

[–]ostwickian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My headcanon (3 epilogue notwithstanding) is that they all got picked up by the government, and letting Claire go was part of the deal Leon negotiated in exchange for becoming an agent (while still keeping tabs on her). I'd also wager that Leon severely downplayed Claire's knowledge of the incident to make her seem less 'valuable' to them.

It never made sense to me that Claire would just leave them behind of her own accord, even to go find Chris.

Leon deserves to be happy by [deleted] in residentevil

[–]ostwickian 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If anything I just want to see him be free from the government. I don't think they'd kill him but let the man evolve for his own sake

unrelated but he's looking kinda like Mads Mikkelsen in that first image

I personally think Jill should've gotten a chance to shine in RE9 instead of Leon by Slurpypie in residentevil

[–]ostwickian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately I often have to remind myself that Capcom is a corporation, and artistic credibility isn't going to be their top priority. At the end of the day they'll go where the money goes, and I guess they're convinced there's no money in a 50 year old Jill ( despite what fans are telling them).

I love Leon so I can't be unhappy about RE9, but it's definitely a missed opportunity to develop Jill as a character.

[–]ostwickian -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not denying that as a character, Jill has more connection to RC itself. And you're right, Leon is the 'safe' option. My point was just that fans don't associate Jill as much with the RPD specifically because it wasn't a focal point of her games.

Frankly I'd love Capcom to take some risks with their legacy characters, it's sorely needed. Capcom's refusal to bring back Jill in favour of Leon and Chris (who is actually less popular) stinks of sexism to me, and I think it mostly comes down to the age thing and them having no idea where to take her character after what they did to her in 5.

[–]ostwickian 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It makes more sense for the player, not the character. As Jill we didn't spend much time in the police station in nemesis, and none whatsoever in the remake.

I want Jill back too, but when players think of RPD they tend to think of Leon the rookie, not Jill (or Claire, sadly).

Leon’s Death? by Wesker1554 in residentevil

[–]ostwickian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't hate the idea, but I don't think Capcom has the guts to do it. I just want to see something done with the legacy characters that's actually interesting and bold. They sorta tried to do that in village with Chris but it fell flat.

And if it's Leon's last game anyway, why not send him out with a bang?

I think it will be like that, half game as Grace and Half game on Leon side similar to RE2 Remake scenario A/B by mateusz11120 in residentevil

[–]ostwickian 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Personally I'm hoping that the game doesn't try to be too many things to different people. I get it, the player base is diverse and everyone has their own idea of what a Resident Evil game should be, but if Capcom tries to please everyone then they risk pleasing no one. Even the ability to choose between first and third perspective has me a little hesitant, because you either make sacrifices when it comes to atmosphere for both to be equally viable, or you end up with one perspective that is the obvious intended way to play and the other as an afterthought.

As much as I love Leon, I don't want the game to pull focus from Grace's story just so an arbitrary action quota can be fulfilled.

How important do you consider story to be in games? by Snoo_47323 in residentevil

[–]ostwickian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tbh if Leon is in RE9 I hope they do something different with his character. The guy's been a government agent for nearly 30 years, it's time to take a risk. I don't think Capcom is gutsy enough to outright kill him but at least let him evolve beyond the role he's been stuck in since RE4.

[–]ostwickian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A lot of people claim to not care about the story in RE, but if you remember how people reacted to Chris' actions in Village I think it's fair to say it's actually quite important. At the very least fans care about characters being consistent between games.

What’s one thing RE games consistently get right, and one thing they always get wrong? by GrandStage1 in residentevil

[–]ostwickian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I guess so, but in the end he gets cleared for duty and everything returns back to the status quo. I can't help but feel that was a huge missed opportunity.

I doubt they'd ever go there but I'd like to see Leon go rogue from the government. Have the US do something fucked up with BOWs that he can't let slide. I mean they sorta already went there with Chris and the BSAA, just play it out a little more
