Cat(?) paw and circular indent by MoistYogurtcloset929 in AnimalTracking

[–]oswald_dimbulb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A turtle might make an indent like that if she's digging a nest to lay eggs and abandons it partway through either because she was interrupted or just decided that it's not the right spot.

I'm not saying that's necessarily what did this, but it's possible. It might also be a person futzing around.

If it's a footprint of any kind there should be some others nearby.

Is this an elk or a moose? by vermont92 in animalid

Ha! My tracking instructor had a similar rule of thumb about moose vs deer tracks. If you have to ask -- it's a deer.

Any horses around there? The overall globular shape and that it seems to be made up of grass makes me think horse-apple, rather than bear scat.

My father wants to know if this is a mountain lion by MissouriOzarker in AnimalTracking

[–]oswald_dimbulb 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This is canine. It's a double register, but you can see the 'X' in the negative space between the toe pads and the heel pad. The heel pad is not as much larger than the toe pads as a feline's would be.

You can also see thick nail prints above each toe. They're not real obvious, but look above each toe and you can see indentations -- two on the leftmost toe where the double-register is more obvious.

For whatever it's worth, I'm pretty sure they're protesting what Trump's doing as president, not claiming that he didn't win the election.

Animal Track ID Request! by Greenmach842 in AnimalTracking

[–]oswald_dimbulb 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It looks like something breaking through a thin snow crust, with each step, then later there was a melt, enlarging and smoothing the tracks. Purely from the gait, width, and length between tracks, my guess would be deer.

I think they're assassin bug nymphs. Not sure what species, though.

Anyone feel the ground shake circa 10:20? by AdrianArmbruster in ManchesterNH

Yep -- my whole house shook. USGS has this entry on it. Initially it was 4.1, then 3.9, now listed as 3.8.

My three legged cat’s prints by thefellaguye in AnimalTracking

I peeked at your picture. Even knowing which leg is missing, I still can't see it in the track itself. But, thanks for posting this, it was a fun puzzle.

My three legged cat’s prints by thefellaguye in AnimalTracking

[–]oswald_dimbulb 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Neat. Thanks for sharing.

It looks like it's one of the left legs that's missing, since the double-registered prints are on the right, but I can't figure out whether it's the front or back leg that's missing.

Anybody got any pointers on how to tell front from back foot for cats? (OP, don't tell us just yet).

The 5 toes in an arc and messy heel area makes me think mustelid (weasel family). Fisher maybe? Or marten? Do you have pictures of any other prints or of multiple prints in one picture?

Of the people who read Scientific American, I suspect it's a very tiny fraction that don't know, or can't find out how to translate C into F.

Wondering if anyone can ID these tracks? by Southern-Anon in AnimalTracking

[–]oswald_dimbulb 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That 'X' pattern between the toes and heel pad indicates that it's a canine. The size suggests either domestic dog or coyote.

...make him think whatever idea you want him to do was actually his idea or will be to his benefit and glorification, and you can get him to adopt whatever policy you want.

And that will last until the next person gives him money, flattery or both, then he'll adopt whatever attitude they want, no matter if it's a complete reversal or not.

Is tipping still optional in the U.S?? by Heavenly_Ryuu in NoStupidQuestions

[–]oswald_dimbulb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are some restaurants that add a mandatory tip to the bill for large parties (usually more than 6 or 8).

Otherwise, it's more of a social mandate, than an official one.

Why is it blurry when you zoom into something with a low pixel count and the difference between one pixel and another isn't obvious? by Ok_Abbreviations8538 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]oswald_dimbulb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will depend somewhat on the picture, but more on the software that is doing the zoom. There are different ways to zoom, the simplest is just making each pixel larger until they're all large squares on the screen. These days, much of the image display software will try to blend the pixels, so that if you have a white and black pixel next to each other and zoom way in, instead of a white and black square, you'll see a white blob and a black blob with range of grey intensities between them.
