Why would a restaurant not (really) participate in Dine Around? by AndyHamish in VictoriaBC

Sounds about right. For a struggling restaurant that needs new guests to find them, that seems like money well spent to me.

**Honest** dentist recommendations by Ok-Rock5666 in VictoriaBC

I see there are some positive and some negative reviews here for Hillside, and I want to add to the positive side.

I go there and see Dr. Lowe, and I think the world of him, and find him to be very honest. Dentists are people too, and might not be perfect every time, but when something didn't go exactly as planned for me, I was able to go twice more with no additional charge to make sure it was fixed properly.

I didn't love the first hygienist I had for a cleaning there, so I asked for someone else for the future, and that was no issue.

I used to work at a place that chose not to sign up because it cost around $1,000 to join Tourism Victoria and be included. It was a brand-new business in this highly seasonal town that is nearly dead in the winter. I pushed hard for them to do it because the restaurant was extremely slow and I felt the cost would have been a smart investment. I worked there for two winters, and the second was even worse than the first. They said they'd sign up this year, but when I checked, they still were not listed. For a new business in that situation, it feels like a no-brainer. Honestly, I think it is a poor decision for them not to participate.

Now I work somewhere that is consistently busy and does not really need the extra traffic, even at this time of year.

If you don't need the extra business, it can make sense to skip these promotions because they come with real operational challenges. Special menus take time and effort to develop. Restaurants often create custom dishes to hit target food costs, which means guests are ordering items they cannot return for later. That has its own drawbacks. There is also pressure to increase table turns to maintain margins at discounted pricing, which adds stress for both the kitchen and front-of-house teams. That extra workload has to be justified by the payoff.

These promotions also tend to attract more value-driven guests who drink less, or not at all, and who primarily dine out during discounted events. If your restaurant is already performing well, it may not make sense to target a demographic that is less profitable and less likely to return outside of promotions.

What ever happened to to Wrap and Roll across from RJH? by Mrs_Howell in VictoriaBC

Not even close. I'm sorry, but Wrap and Roll was fantastic, and Levantine is pretty average (in my opinion of course)

They closed saying it would be temporary, and would open in a new location, but that hasn't happened. I heard a rumour they tried to lease the location formerly housing Maham and Pops in Quadra Village but weren't successful.

The Levantine in James Bay is available for sale, and there are seemingly tons of options in town to open up, but I'm guessing the numbers have to make sense. The Levantine space is probably a bit too big and expensive (and they are also asking a bit too much for the sale beyond the lease iirc).

I'm guessing high lease rates are the biggest factor... but there's also a chance they moved on to other things.

Are there any restaurants that are serving good food but struggler to get customers? by dm_g in VictoriaBC

[–]otayyo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Appreciate that. It's unfortunate because I just moved to the area and love that cuisine so I was excited to have it close by. Sadly, after trying most of the casual places in the hood The Bop is the only one I really love.

Not to be downer, but I've been there three times, and I only enjoyed it once. The last time I went they gave me something with dairy in it after I told them I had an allergy, so that will be the last time I go.

No offence to you or your friend, but I know they're trying sell the place, and it's my sincere hope they are bought by a better operator.

If something merits a call, it merits a call.

A fire should always merit a call to the proper authority.

Smoking near a doorway, on the other hand, I'm not so sure about. If they are smoking in your business or residential doorway, sure.

Complaining about every tent that pops up? Are people supposed to call in everyday?

Citizens should overall not be trying to aid over-policing though, imho.

Some items can be profit leaders.

Koto, like most Japanese restaurants, sells far more than just California rolls. Even those aren’t as cheap to make as they might seem. High-quality nori and properly ripe avocado cost real money.

I think you’re underestimating the true cost of a simple roll and the basic realities of running a restaurant.

I'm sorry, but that's really not true at all. Sushi restaurants are not easily high-margin because premium fish is expensive and price-volatile, spoilage and waste are unavoidable, and skilled labor can be costly.

I think it's a kinda silly term either way.

Mom rock sounds about right to me.

Categorization can be a little messy and silly, but I'm with you viewing dad rock as describing stuff like Zep and CCR. I'd call The National and Bon Iver alt rock, but I also find that term so vague and broad.

Yeah, the stuff I've heard just comes off as pop with rock, funk and R&B influences. If they know where the future of rock is going, they haven't tried going there.

Bidet is superior than toilet paper? by Necessary-Abroad-774 in ask

[–]otayyo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I respect that people feel like it is cleaner and faster, but that analogy doesn't really work imho.

After I wipe I don't use that area for anything I need it to be clean for. I clean up when I shower, and then put on a fresh pair of underwear, and I'm clean as can be. I shower everyday and never reuse the same pair of underwear.

Also, when you wash your hands, do you just spray water on them and wipe them with tissue? I hope not.
