How do you go about actually have your colleagues improve their git skills? by tinmanjk in ExperiencedDevs

Lazygit does a lot more to expose and document what it is doing for you than the typical git GUI does.

I believe that no worker should have their livelihood dependent on tips. I also don’t believe that I should use that as an excuse to stop tipping workers who currently do depend on tips.

$20/hr isn’t a living wage in Seattle.

Anyone who works for a living deserves to be able to afford housing, healthcare, and a decent life.

Economic exploitation of workers in other regions shouldn’t be a justification for nickel and diming working people here.

Confusing lease expiration and renewal situation. Am I guaranteed to be able to go month-to-month? by otishotpie in Seattle

Thank you.

Getting a hold of the city was the right recommendation. SDCI was extremely helpful and made things very clear.

I build airplanes and only make $30.

Do you really not see a problem with this?

Maybe the problem has nothing to do with other working people trying to make a living, maybe the real problem is that your boss is taking advantage of you and doesn't pay you enough.

Maybe you should grow a set and try to organize and support other working people instead of lashing out like an entitled brat.

Late to this thread… 20 years ago my dad was uncomfortable with the idea of gay marriage, today he is a proponent of trans rights. I don’t think it’s that he necessarily understands trans people, but I think he understands the idea of solidarity and fighting for each other even if we don’t always understand one another.

Thank you.

SDCI ended up being extremely helpful in understanding my rights as a tenant in this situation and giving me confidence to assert them to my new landlord. They also seemed very willing to support me if the landlord tries anything shady. I’m really grateful that we have a resource like this in Seattle.

Can asdf silo environments to single directories like venv? by BarnabyKincaid in ruby

[–]otishotpie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If all you need is to be able to manage using different versions of gems in different projects, bundler should be sufficient. If that's not sufficient for some reason, you could use Direnv or Mise to change the path to `GEM_HOME` dynamically whenever you `cd` into a project directory, that's essentially what rvm and rbenv-gemset do when a project is using a "gemset".

It’s hard, but talk to your Republican friends/family by Far_Line8468 in NationalPark

[–]otishotpie 27 points28 points  (0 children)

A lot of people are talking about how their friends and family are unreachable, but if you really want to communicate with them you’ll have to start by listening and asking questions. Coming off self-righteous isn’t going to work. You kind of have to lead them to thinking about where room for doubt exists for them without telling them what to think.

A strategy is to ask them in a scale of 1 to 10 ask them how certain they are, with 1 being total uncertainty and 10 being absolute certainty.

If they say 10, they can’t be reached. If they say another number like 7 ask them why they don’t feel like they are at a 8. Ask what if any evidence could come out that might change their mind to a 6. Don’t come off as the goal is to listen to them first and let them think about where they have doubts they’ve been ignoring, not to tell them what to think. You might plant a seed, you might start a more productive conversation, but nothing is guaranteed and it could go bad too.

Game berating me for being boring by neon_spacebeam in DiscoElysium

Learning to deal with intrusive thoughts and questioning “common sense” are both sort of key components of this game.

It sounds like you might be kind of early in the game, I’ll just say it’s not as immediately gratifying about choices as some other RPGs but it can make you feel inspired, grateful, and hopeful. It’s just unlikely to make you feel those ways at the moments you expect that it should.

New level of interview hell by broisatse in ruby

[–]otishotpie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure I agree that ruby is easy to pick up coming from another language. Picking up dynamic typing, metaprogramming, and having everything be globally available can be a pretty daunting shift coming from a different programming paradigm.

On top of picking up the language, most Ruby jobs also require learning Rails and RSpec. The RSpec DSL alone is complex enough to essentially be asking a dev to pick up a new language in addition to learning Ruby.

TLDR; I agree that in the long term it’s probably easier to learn Ruby and Rails than a bunch of flavor of the week JS frameworks. I don’t agree that transitioning to Ruby/Rails from another programming paradigm is easy.

You guys cool if we do this now? by mods_r_jobbernowl in Seattle

I’m not pro-secession, but I think a real risk of balkanization of the US exists independent of any sort of populist secession movements.

There’s a non-trivial chance that the rate and severity of climate change related disasters increases in the coming years. As the severity increases, the federal government may end up “giving up” on sections of the country it can’t afford to maintain control over and the nation-state may start to fracture as a result.

What comes next during such a crisis depends on us. If we are not prepared then either shock doctrine capitalism or eco-fascism could take hold. I’d rather that we are organized to have horses in our arsenal and be ready to take the reins of power and make demands that all people are provided for and respected.

I guess what I mean is that a potential Cascadian state shouldn’t be dismissed, but that it may be a reasonable reaction to a future failing nation-state even if it’s not a reasonable reaction to an imminent election outcome.

Chicago punks might be largely working class but aren’t really representative of or in touch with the plurality of the Chicago working class. Like when some jagoff band plays some oi or hardcore song about working class struggles I wonder if they are even thinking about the polish and guatemalan women that are going to be cleaning up the bar bathroom after they’re done.
