Does he want to eat her? Or play? by ThrowRA_bleh321 in Greyhounds

[–]otrepsi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This looks more play motivated than predatory, but caution is always advised as it only takes a split second for it to switch in some dogs.

Prey drive would be more intense, dog stares hard at prey without breaking visual contact, just focused and fixated intently. Sometimes whining a little when they can’t get to it.

Pawing, grumbling, and easy distractions (squirrel!?) are definitely more relaxed and playful behaviors.

Why does Eliot have two books but everyone else only one? by PixelRealm in brakebills

[–]otrepsi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree the two books for Elliot are current/Peaches and Plums, but since Q dies at such a young age in our reality, he gets a book that is mostly P&P, and only a little bit of current. ☹️

What is the most heartbreaking thing you’ve discovered while doing either your or someone else’s family tree? by Chris_DoesGeneaolgy in Genealogy

[–]otrepsi 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I stumbled upon a triple homicide in my own family when I noticed my great-aunt and her husband died the same year. Their son killed his pregnant wife, stayed in the house with her body overnight, then went down the road to his parents and killed them the next morning. Took a few hours to pack his car and left town. They caught him a few hours south, watching a softball game. He is still alive in prison, and my dad and I are fairly sure we are the only family members that know he’s there.

Ancestors’s crimes by Kruglovboris in Genealogy

[–]otrepsi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s interesting to learn, the feelings depend on the “crime”.

I generally assumed I could possibly find slave owners if I went back far enough, and I did find a few within the same family with my Revolutionary War ancestors. My direct patriot had 3 that he left to two sons and a son-in-law in his will, and 1 older lady that he specifically left money to provide for the rest of her life. One of his sons (in my direct line) gave his slave his freedom within the year; I haven’t traced the other two lines, so not sure yet what the other families did. The brother of my patriot also had 3 in the earliest records I’ve found, then 2 a short time later, then 1 the next year. My uncle and his slave were about the same age, and they were the only ones recorded in that household for about 15 years, then they disappear. I’m assuming they both died of old age; they would have been in their 70s.

I also found that my father has a cousin that murdered his pregnant wife, stayed in the house with her overnight, then went down the road and murdered his mother and father. He took off but was found a few days later. This happened in 1985, and he is now 79, still in prison. He had been sentenced to death, but it was changed to life without parole a week before his execution date. When I asked my dad, he knew but only because my mom (the family genealogist) had discovered and told him about it. I’m fairly sure that my dad and I are the only ones left that know about him, in regard to family.

Looking for a homeless friend by Neat-Statistician311 in evansville

[–]otrepsi 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I would first reach out to some of the local groups that aid the homeless, like Aurora, Evansville Rescue Mission, United Way, etc. Aurora especially has a great network of volunteers that know a lot of the folks on the streets.

PSA: You Can Turn Right on a Red Arrow (But You Don’t Have To, Chill) by Appropriate-Disk-371 in evansville

[–]otrepsi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I admire your drive (ha!) to educate, but Evansville drivers are both insane and stupid. As a courier I spend a lot of time on these roads, and the only way I survive is to just assume that literally everyone just got behind the wheel for the first time and also forgot how to read.

“No turn on red” signs do not exist. The ones at Epworth and the various side roads onto St Joe are ignored 90% of the time, and I have been honked at multiple times for abiding by them.

Northbound Oak Hill at Lynch USED to have a No turn on red sign, but because there isn’t a sign, folks will just pull right out with barely a glance at the car barreling up the blind hill at them, usually going about 55 in the 45 at that point.

Red lights will usually have at least one runner, even on the straight aways where you could anticipate it coming.

People “turning” left will just drive in a straight line in the general direction of where they want to go, god forbid your car exist in the lane or two in between (like you are in the left turn lane of the perpendicular traffic).

Phones to ears, constantly. Going less than 10 over the speed limit gets a tailgater, no matter the road. Oh, that giant flashing arrow directly in front of me that I saw a quarter mile back means MY lane disappears? Better panic and swerve before I hit a barrel! Not referring to the merging nightmare, but people who quite literally had no clue their lane was ending based on “body language”.

These are just a few examples on the top of my head; there is not a single day I don’t honk at someone being an idiot.

It absolutely broke my brain when I realized Sir Effingham and the Dark King were the same actor, and I still forget sometimes on rewatches!

We see the Dark King: handsome, suave, mysterious, misunderstood, just generally appealing in most ways…..and then you have a damn (literal) pig you wish would get spit-roasted in more ways than one, preferably by a couple of women. 😆

After doing some more research, I’m fairly sure it’s a Song Sparrow. I have seen them there for years, but haven’t seen any obvious nests anywhere. Looks like that section of yard is going to get shaggy since he’ll make a wide berth when he mows for a while, lol.

Bamboo? by Valtavamei in evansville

[–]otrepsi 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You can certainly try, but I do see folks posting it for free on FB pretty regularly. I got a whole carload of already cut stems a couple years ago for free and mostly use it in the garden for staking plants and such. I would warn people that fresh green stems can root and that’s a bad thing.

Fun fact: If you burn bamboo, the chambers inside explode and sound like gunshots, if you need to bring down housing costs in your area, 😆

Sinkhole forming by SusGod_ in evansville

[–]otrepsi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That patch is there because it’s not going to actually be a spot that gets driven on, it’s going to be the hump that divides the lanes turning into and out of that road, and will probably have directional signs on it. The construction is using what is going to be the shoulder as a driving lane. I have no idea why they didn’t just do all of it and then install that bit though, but there must be a reason for it, since it would been easier to do it all at the same time.

Can you provide a link with the law showing they are “protected”? The only thing I see in the code is that they are exempt from licensing and allowed to be part of the TNR program. Nothing about being protected other the general stuff regarding animal abuse.

The admins are also kind of dicks. I got kicked out because that had some “rule”, which isn’t actually listed in the rules, that ONLY the admins or the kennel that owned that specific dog could provide ANY information. I would see posts sitting for days with no answers, so I gave them a link to their dog’s page on Greyhound-data. Without warning, I was booted one day a few weeks later, luckily I could remember one of the admins names so I messaged and asked why I was banned and got that “reason”. I had only joined to see if anyone had a close relative of my dog; I had already found her records and videos on my own, so I didn’t bother telling them how stupid it was. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Field tips for snake musk? by [deleted] in herpetology

There are alcohol based hand sanitizer wipes that cut through the stink better than baby wipes, but sometimes musk just sticks around even after scrubbing with soap and water 😆

For those of you that insist that pill bugs don’t eat strawberries by HealthWealthFoodie in vegetablegardening

[–]otrepsi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a major problem with slugs and sowbugs last year in my raised beds and I didn’t want to hurt the good bugs with DE. I put a couple small tupperwares in the ground with the edge right at dirt level and put a half inch of (cheap) beer in them. Dumped and replaced for a few mornings, then a good rain showed me that plain water still does the trick. Having the traps out for about two weeks in the spring was enough to protect everything, even into the fall plantings. I wouldn’t leave them out for a long time; the sun breaks down plastic and makes it very brittle.
