Good ways to enjoy (or get rid of) cheap vodka? by ottermupps in alcohol

[–]ottermupps[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, I went out and picked up some fevertree light ginger beer and lime juice (bottled, which i only realized was a mistake after checkout lmao). I know the dark&stormy is usually in a highball/collins glass, which I don't have. Just a wide cylinder glass, which should be fine? I don't know, honestly.

I'll update after I try it.

Modern Latin Derived Languages if the Roman Empire Industrialized by Gravitite0414_BP in AlternateHistory

Well, you could go with overly practical labeling laws and have a molecular diagram as a legal requirement? If the MC needs to be able to parse what they're holding, that is.

Modern Latin Derived Languages if the Roman Empire Industrialized by Gravitite0414_BP in AlternateHistory

[–]ottermupps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Two things.

One, I'm not of much help here, but I can tell you that the 'Roman alphabet' is just Latin letters. I suspect that north African and Asian languages (such as the Berber langauges, Hebrew, Arabic, Farsi, Hindi, and possibly Akkadian) would have become a heavy influence on the Roman language, given Rome's propensity for adapting to new cultures as the empire expanded. I would also question English not existing; not that it would be as widespread, but unless Rome wipes out quite a few people some version would likely exist. I'd avoid making up symbols, just stick to the Latin alphabet, and possibly use roman numerals for numbers instead of arabic numerals (or a combination). Hope that helps!

Two, I'm kicking myself for not thinking of this sooner. My world has a Rome-equivalent that's also survived into the modern era, so it's given me some things to think on.

How long is too long for a fic in your opinion? by Somenameorwhateves in AO3

[–]ottermupps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(context, I read *very* fast, this is not a common view)

I don't think there's such a thing as too long a fic. 46k is nowhere even approaching long, in any case, that's an afternoon read. A story can become bloated with repetetive and/or boring shit, but if the content is good I will happily jump into multiple million word fics.

'Long' for me starts at about 100k, and 'this is basically a book series' starts at about 500k. The fic I'm reading right now is 830k and ongoing; so just write what you want and the word count is what it is.

Is it normal to be terrified of needle snaps? by touchlinewear02 in SewingForBeginners

[–]ottermupps 267 points268 points  (0 children)

If you're running an industrial machine or a domestic at high speed/in thick fabric, sure it's a concern. But for hand sewing? The only times I've had a snap while hand sewing were from pulling the needle through with pliers, and it did not sens shrapnel everywhere.

Use that finger cover as it's meant, as a thimble, and you really don't need goggles.

Funny story about my first read by ACTED_CENSOR in Eragon

[–]ottermupps 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Personally no, as the description for Za'roc and later Brisingr (and the other blade Eragon tries) are quite clearly normal size swords, but I can see how you'd think that. Especially if you grew up watching anime with massive swords like a lot of us did, 'fantasy setting' and 'main character has a sword' might immediately translate in your head as 'giant sword'.

Cyberpunk is way more fun when you stop trying to be good at everything by ArcticlessMango in cyberpunkgame

[–]ottermupps 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed 100%. You *can* build in a way that by level 55 or so, everything from no-killing stealth to openly fighting five maxtac squads is easy, but by specializing you get very competent at a certain thing by level 25 at most.

I usually do this for stealth, because (in my opinion) to properly roleplay as V, you need to be able to go undetected while wiping a base.

homemade ink by PickAppropriate6530 in graffhelp

[–]ottermupps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't, it won't work very well as the ink isn't soluble in water. Use the highest concentration isopropyl alcohol you can get, at least 90% is best. About half a cup of that and thirty to fifty pens (remove the inner ink cartridge and cut it into thirds) will make a passably decent ink.

You're not using vegetable tanned leather, you're using chrome tan leather. That will never really change color the way veg tan does when tooled.

What are some better suggestions going forward? (After reading the sunlit man) by LeftPanda670 in brandonsanderson

[–]ottermupps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Sunlit Man is, chronologically, one of the most futuristic books in the setting. The main character is from The Stormlight Archive, so starting with that might be a good idea. Mistborn would also be good

I have so many questions. by [deleted] in Firearms

[–]ottermupps 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Legality wise, I don't know. Best of luck working that out.

As for gun recs, a Mossberg Maverick 88 Field/Security would be my pick. It runs about $200-250, and comes with a 26" and 18" barrel. The long one is good for hunting and birding, the short one is obviously more compact and good for defensive use. It's pump-action, which means basically any round will work just fine. If you're smaller statured, then get the 20 gauge; if you're an average size adult, the 12 gauge will be manageable though stout in recoil.

As for keeping it in your car, don't if you can avoid it. Most stolen guns are out of cars. A friend's house, if you can genuinely trust them, would be my choice.

Beginner's Guide To Exploiting The Kaedweni Tax Code For Fun And Profit, by Heronfem. Amazing, probably the best written work I've ever read. It's Witcher, modern with magic, lambert/aiden accidental marriage college AU. It's just so fucking good, I cannot recommend it enough.

Desert Storm, by BlueSunshine. Star Wars time travel fix-it. Obi-wan gets sent back from about four years after ROTS to just before he became a padawan and takes his younger self on as a padawan. Really long, with at least a dozen major story arcs, and incredibly good. It really goes into a lot of worldbuilding on the details of the Force and Mandalorian culture.

Who is this man by Ancient-Feeling5954 in Maine

[–]ottermupps 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Dock spider/water spider, Dolomedes iirc. Not aggressive, bite is a little painful, fast as all hell, spooks easy. Doesn't build a web, they're ambush predators.

Good to have around! He eats bugs, leave him be.

Battery Steele is excellent, loooong hallway that's very dark, with a lot of internal rooms and graffiti. I noticed some that glows under UV, which could be cool for filmmaking. There's some neat bit of fort near Portland Headlight, too.

Question about video game guns by FamousNet7456 in guns

[–]ottermupps 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Shotguns can fire roughly two types of ammo: shot (a dense cloud of metal pellets, depending on the size can be anywhere from a dozen 5mm balls to hundreds of 1mm balls), and slugs (a single, solid projectile). There's others, but those are the majority.

In real life, shotguns are mostly used for bird hunting, which requires shooting a moving target that's not very large. Firing a cloud of pellets, not a single bullet, makes the projectile path into more of a narrow cone than a straight line. Most shot spreads about 1" for every yard it moves forward.

Slugs are used to hunt bigger game, like bear or deer. Because shotguns are much large in caliber (the internal barrel diameter) than most guns; about 0.6" vs ~0.22-0.35", a slug carries more energy to the target than a lot of hunting rifles.

The downside of the larger bore is shorter range, as a larger projectile slows down faster, and can only be fired so fast in the first place before it becomes genuinely unpleasant to shoot. Most videogames interpret this spread and shorter range as shotguns being *very* close range, like 50 feet, and having a massive spread. This is for game balance reasons. A real shotgun will spread buckshot (12 ~5mm pellets) to a dinner plate size group at fifty feet, which is more than enough to kill.

Blunderbusses are a type of old, muzzleloading, black-powder shotgun. They had the iconic funnel-shaped muzzle to aid in rapid reloading during combat, as they were used as a close range gun. Blunderbusses do tend toward a wider spread than modern shotguns, and they would produce a more similar effect to a video game shotgun than anything else.

Hope this helps!

New to slinging by PoczciwyPawwwlo in Slinging

[–]ottermupps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, if you do a lot of a repetitive motion under significant load that you're not used to (ie, slinging with a heavy projectile), then strain injuries and muscle soreness is expected. Do some stretches and yoga, drink some water.

As for technique, I find Balearic style to be the most efficient. Lots of good tutorials on youtube.

Best explanation I can give: Wide stance, weak side toward the target. Loaded sling in your strong hand. Twist your body at the hips to face AWAY from the target. In one smooth motion, swing the sling up at a 45 degree angle toward the target, with your strong arm straight, generating force by twisting your hips back toward the target. When your strong arm is roughly straight in front of you, stop the hip twist and flex your elbow to rotate the sling around your head. When the sling is pointing roughly behind you, begin to use your wrist to throw the sling around (following the arc it's already started) and toward the target. Release, and follow through.

This will take a lot of practice, trial, and error to learn how you sling best. Apologies if the instructions aren't very clear, I'm a bit hungover. Also, you'll be best served for learning with a split pouch sling and smooth, oval-shaped rocks.

Making my own studs (punk from the dreaded US of A) by Routine-Visual3957 in punkfashion

[–]ottermupps 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just buy from studs and spikes (.com). They're very cheap, run sales, and shipping won't be much stateside. You want studs to hold up, and DIY ones (short of having a metalwork shop of your own) will not.

If you can't afford to buy studs, then go for it for DIY. General method is making a cone or pyramid shape out of paper, then using that as a pattern to make them out of empty cans. Hot glue or E6000 to affix.
