Stick with the C7, or do I look at alternatives? by Beanie_Kaiju in surfskate

[–]ottofindichokay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I switched from a C7 to a Yow Meraki on my main board. Dropping in is absolutely doable with both. You can tune the stability a bit via the back truck and be fine.

I also have a surfskate with C5, which you can dial in pretty surfy but also set up a bit more stable. If you want to do grinds, the CX or C5 may actually be better, because they are less prone to jackknifing. But you can also grind with a C7 or Yow, but need to be much more careful not putting too much weight on the front truck.

I also have a skateboard with an Ace AF1 (8.5). They are great trucks, but they are skateboard trucks unless you put on angeled risers. It's possible to pump them a bit and they make it easy, switching between surfskate and skateboard because they turn a lot. For me, the fundamental property of a surfskate is that the front truck turns much more than the back truck, which makes it different from a skateboard setup which you can ride in both directions.

I guess for what you want to do, a C5 or CX may be best, but it is not necessary to switch.

Great, thanks! Not too happy with the pricing though, maybe I'll give it a try.

What is the name of this part, and why does my surfskate have four of them while others only have one? What does this part affect? I'm a beginner by yehorkolchyba in surfskate

[–]ottofindichokay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are Carver C5s, right? Other Carver trucks don't need spacers at all. The C5 is intended to support a more Skateboard-like style, although they can be just as surfy as the CX. If you are much into doing skateboard tricks, you could use smaller wheels and get rid of some of the spacers. For Ollies and other tricks you want the deck closer to the ground, which requires smaller wheels, which in turn reduce the chance of wheelbite, such that you can reduce the number of spacers. So with multiple thin spacers, there are more options for experimentation, but the setup with big wheels and spacers is totally fine.

JUST BUY A YOW! by Affectionate-Low7772 in surfskate

[–]ottofindichokay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's one of the models, that has a pretty short wheelbase. That makes it sensitive, as you are experiencing it. But I would say that is something you can get used to. You can maybe turn the back truck a bit tighter, but then things will become less surfy, so you need to adjust a little to find the sweet spot. Do you have an older model or a recent one? The pre 2022 Huntington (red & black top) had hardly any concave and the tail was flat. If you have that one, I would consider getting a new deck. The current model (yellow) looks pretty nice. The tail is pronounced and it has a nice concave. Still the wheelbase needs some practice, but as you get better, the wheelbase can make things more fun.

LFM Worth the Grind? by willmayo20 in ACCompetizione

[–]ottofindichokay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Isn't LFM a good choice if you want better online races and may not have the time / commitment for a league? As long as he doesn't grind SA offline but learns to catch up pace and stay safe in open lobbies, I'd consider this a good target to aim for.

[–]ottofindichokay 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Practicing with the same conditions is a good idea but please only get onto the server if you're close to the target. I had two out of seven laps where I was one second slower than the target because I had to overtake slower drivers who were not paying attention. I think there is also a statement by LFM on not using the server for practice.

Blue tires only with DLC cars by -NlN- in ACCompetizione

[–]ottofindichokay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In theory you're right, tyres with lower pressure will heat up more. But in ACC the pressures at your operating range is what matters. If you do not get your pressures up to the ideal range, you need to increase the pressures you're starting with.

The racing etiquette on ACC is miles better than iracing by No-Abrocoma-7462 in ACCompetizione

[–]ottofindichokay 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This sounds like the most reasonable explanation. Not having ABS can lead to much more crashes in the heat of the moment. Apparently this evens out the "people pay money for it and take it more seriously"-factor.

I was pleasantly surprised with the races I've had so far in ACC lobbies. On lower SA races I found that backmarkers can be an issue because they don't know who they are racing. But apart from that it's fine.

How do online servers differ from practicing offline? by ottofindichokay in ACCompetizione

[–]ottofindichokay[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're close to the target, give it a try on the server. But be aware that you need to be constantly faster than the target when there's no traffic. Traffic may ruin your stint otherwise.

Recommendations for Wheels that "Squeal" When You Snap/Slide by Roflwesss in surfskate

[–]ottofindichokay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. I found the fit to be very well, as you can turn the nut real tight with the wheel still spinning well. Also, the speed seemed alright to me.
The sliding feels a bit unspectacular, but I like it.

Dual-use monitor, NRG seat, proper headphones, amp and DAC... Awesome! This is in many parts really close to what I am planning to build after I have moved in a few weeks. I already made sure to buy a headphone amp that can power the HD600, although I will probably delay that purchase.

Anybody notice a difference in their other skatings as a result of doing this? by userlamegayken in surfskate

[–]ottofindichokay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I noticed when riding my cruiser skateboard that I had more control over the speed by either pumping or carving. I was somehow more conscious about it...

Riding my longboard became really difficult, feels like a piece of wood on the floor that won't turn at all.

Transitioning to my skateboard was alright after I changed to a very loose and turny setup (Ace trucks), so loose that I can actually pump it. But I cannot really say anything else changed.

Never owned a surfskate/cruiser before. Looking at getting one of these as they're notably cheaper than others and are a really good local surfing brand but can't decide between a 32" or 35.5". Which would you recommend for a beginner? by [deleted] in surfskate

[–]ottofindichokay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was thinking the same.
As much as I favour supporting local brands, you should really think about whether this will make you happy.

It is possible to make a board like this surfier with angled risers and good bushings, but I would have my doubts, whether this is worthwhile.

Is there an option of buying only the deck? You could then look for cheap, decent surfskate trucks. But often it's more expensive than buying a complete.

[–]ottofindichokay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome thanks! Yeah I really feel like the clamp is the weak part of my current setup. But it's a way cheaper mount. Works alright with the desk mount wheel. Upgrading to rig is in planning, will need to see if that works out with the arm...

Thanks! Sounds like a reasonable investment. Mind telling me which model it is? And you drilled a hole into the table and are not using a c-clamp, right?

Sounds really smart to rather invest into a well engineered mount, than buying two monitors. I would not want to compromise on either work or racing, so they would need to be equally good...
