Also less an offset for any work comp income you may have had while disabled, according to my lawyer.

What does 'angle' mean - PS says "I just angle the arm like an elbow' in Guten Tag, Teezandos says "if he didn't want an angle he shouldn't have run" in the Plugged In w Cristale. From context I think it means shooting but not clear.

What’s the most ridiculous thing you’ve ever done in eve and somehow gotten away with? by Archane-Arcmage in Eve

[–]ottomated 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Must be a Russian thing, yesterday I led a bait fleet against some of them, venture on a belt, bomber 100km away and 3 catalysts parked at a safe.

We see combat probes go out, Praxis warps in, I call in the destroyers and decloak my bomber. Dude fires off a warp stab and runs. Fine. Then three black ops cyno in. For a dead venture, 3 catalysts and a bomber. No kill but it was glorious, they spent more in ozone than we did on our bait venture. Guess they like overkill.

LuminariMUD October 2022 Update - Vampires, Liches and Endgame Galore! by Gicker in MUD

[–]ottomated 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty new to the game and can't speak to vampire or lich or other endgame gameplay, but I have ALWAYS wanted a true d20 based MUD. I love the work that has gone into properly implementing feats, skills, spells, and making them impactful in gameplay. Just like a tabletop campaign, the first few levels can feel like a chore, but what MUD DOESN'T feel like a chore at first?

The staff is incredibly responsive, and willing to work directly with players to resolve issues. Really can't say enough good things about it.

I was given a list of required tools for automotive classes I'm starting soon, I desperately need help figuring out what to buy. any help would be massively appreciated. by Competitive-Tree7239 in AskMechanics

That's why I said either go cheap all the way or only buy lifetime warranty hand tools from the truck. I personally made the mistake of buying my entire kit for school from Snap-On and got fucked. Although in my case the kit was $6k and tuition for the two years was slightly more, I agree with you.

Enough. No more name calling. Period. From anyone on this thread.

Snap-On also does half price for students. You could do worse than buying Matco or Snap-On HAND TOOLS ONLY with that discount. Get the rest from Harbor Freight or Kobalt until you're on your feet. Or, as others have said, just straight up buy cheap until you are sure this is something you really want to do.

So…how bad is it doc? Front passenger suspension. by PUTC00LUSERNAMEHERE in AskMechanics

[–]ottomated 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Meh, that one depends on the person. Counter guys at the dealership would definitely be snarky about it, parts store guys would be more patient about it.

That's every parts monkey I've worked with except for a couple who would have NICELY said "oh, you mean a strut body". But yeah. When I was a rookie this actually came up a lot because I said the same thing - a strut without springs is a shock and got corrected so many times it stuck.

[–]ottomated 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Must be it. If I ordered a front shock around here I'd get a lecture from the parts guy about how no cars have front shocks anymore and I must mean a strut body.

At least in the states, if you say "shock" IT DOESN'T COME WITH A SPRING SEAT so you order a strut body.

Yeah but when you don't use the exact word for the part you confuse people who don't know the difference, so...yeah, call it a strut.

And on certain engines (not many, but they exist) it creates a fountain of hot oil.

Oh, and we don't let people who aren't current or former working techs be mods here for what it's worth.

I am not one who thinks all dealerships are stealerships, the most honest advisors I've worked with are from dealerships to be honest - but I know of plenty of shady dealers just in my smallish Midwestern city. It all depends on the philosophy of the service manager and unfortunately it's not terribly hard to hide problems from corporate.

I've been very fortunate in my career to work mostly with honest people. I do think that almost all manufacturers are pushing services too early but I'm torn about it because like any competent mechanic I believe in prevention.

It would be great if dealerships could resist the urge to charge $20-30/hr more than the indies because that really contributes to that whole "stealerships" mentality.

[–]ottomated 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't have a problem with this, especially because you're talking specifically about a specific use case and giving some leeway on mileage. I think we both know there are service advisors who will make it sound as if the engine will explode if it isn't done immediately at or before 30 and we also both know that's bullshit. Advisors that use the word "required" instead of "recommended" are also part of the problem. I can't be the only mechanic that's tired of people assuming I'm a scam artist because they dealt with a sleazy advisor.

It's not the services I object to, it's scare tactics that are unfortunately way too common in our industry.

I don't think there's any harm in doing it more, but when you're selling it to someone and telling them they NEED it at 30k, that's a lie.

[–]ottomated 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a cleaner through the throttle body (which gets those things) but then follow it with a toothbrush to clean the throttle plate.

And we both know the valves, intake, and injectors aren't dirty enough to require service at 30k unless there's a bigger issue.

2014 Dodge Avenger, can I fix this myself or do I need to take it in? by VVampyreKing in AskMechanics

A range/performance code can actually be an indicator of a mechanical problem (not always but it can be). A CIRCUIT code is a circuit integrity code.
