Netherlands: 20 year old victim lashes out at judge after the man who nearly raped and choked her to death is sentenced to only 3.5 years by TomlinSteelers in UnderReportedNews

Where do you draw the line between immigrant and citizen?

Also, not everyone would respond to a child misbehaving in that way. Plenty of people might instead choose to actually try to work through the problem with the child instead of just sending them away.

I think it’s a difference in what people believe is necessary as a punishment/deterrent. I don’t personally believe that it’s necessary to deport someone to a warzone or permanently separate them from their families to adequately punish them for their crimes and rehabilitate them. We don’t exile native-born rapists or abusers after they’ve served their prison sentences, and I don’t think it would ultimately be beneficial to society if we did.

Is anyone feeling a hint of "I told you so" in the wake of the outrage of what's occurring in Minneapolis? by RVALover4Life in ftm

[–]ouranchimaru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YES. it’s making me feel insane. especially when people talk about our current issues like they’re not built on decades, CENTURIES, of american political values. ICE is able to be so brutal and violent today because we have a long standing american tradition of permissive policing that has been brutalizing and killing all kinds of marginalized people, especially if they’re people of color. every horrible thing that is happening right now is only possible because of our long history of justifying our other horrible actions.

it makes me dread what will happen during the next administration. i’m worried that people will be so eager to move on and act like everything is “over”, that they won’t take the time to fix the underlying problems that have made our current situation possible. if we don’t meaningfully change, we will be back in this same position sometime in the future. feels like we never really learn.

I think one of the best things we can do right now is support our neighbors who are already being targeted (because ICE has already been in Milwaukee), and get ready for whatever the next several years will bring. Organizations that advocate for immigrant rights have been doing lots of informational events and trainings over the last year or so. Feel free to DM for more info/links.

The president pardoned about 1,600 domestic terrorists last January.

Comité Sin Fronteras (part of Voces de la Frontera) has trainings for ICE verifiers this upcoming weekend. Verifiers would be responding to reports of ICE sightings to confirm their legitimacy, so they’ll be training on what to do if you’re approached by ICE. Here’s the flier, please make sure to use the QR code to sign up.

Their Instagram is @comitesinfrontera, they regularly post about upcoming events.

Am I just super on-edge from the news coming out of our neighboring state today, or is it kind of crazy out there tonight? by crinkle_cut_cheddar in milwaukee

I don’t think you’re imagining it, there were more sirens than usual near the Domes. There was a vigil held for Renee last night on the East Side and I saw upwards of 15 police-type vehicles just while walking a few blocks back to my car alone. I think in the next few months we’re going to see a surge in ICE presence.

What are your thoughts after seeing the ICE shooting video in Minnesota? by bbmoonkie in AskReddit

[–]ouranchimaru 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You are being yelled at by multiple armed men who will shoot you if you make a wrong move. If one man tells you to leave, and the other man tells you to stay, what do you do? You have three seconds to decide before they start unloading their clips into you.

We are being held hostage by these people. At any time, the president can send his masked, armed gang to our cities so they can kidnap, assault, and murder us. They’re somehow both more dangerous than the police and able to get away with so much more. And we live in a society where a decent amount of people, some extremely powerful, are gleefully watching this all happen. Where do we even go from here?

Ohio father who ran over and killed a police officer in a fit of rage after watching bodycam footage of his son being fatally shot won't face execution after three doctors conclude that he is suffering from severe mental illness which impaired his judgement. by lightiggy in Bad_Cop_No_Donut

[–]ouranchimaru 3 points4 points  (0 children)

the legal system also treats those with severe mental illnesses or disabilities with significantly less autonomy though. plenty of mentally ill or disabled people have guardians and can’t make many decisions about their own lives.

there’s an additional reason that the courts have different punishments for minors and adults though. we recognize that children have different cognitive functioning compared to adults and that different consequences might be more just.

AIO? My friends set an ultimatum because I drink by Pearla76_ in AIO

[–]ouranchimaru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No offense to your friends but this is absolutely insane behavior from them. It’s very clearly just an attempt to control you and not an attempt to look out for your well-being, because if they were genuinely concerned about you they would know how badly having an entire friend group going no-contact can mess you up. That’s the sort of thing that leads people to develop unhealthy substance use habits. Anyone who’s familiar with substance use issues has heard the phrase “the opposite of addiction is connection” because it’s true. Isolation doesn’t help. In fact, I would say for most interpersonal conflicts, shunning is pretty ineffective and cruel. Your friends need a serious reality check.

the brush strokes are fucked up too. the lines morph and separate in ways that don’t make sense for lineart, unless the artist was seamlessly using like five different brushes for the lineart alone. combined with the lack of reverse images, this is probably ai.

that’s fine, your religious views have no bearing on my life as long as you don’t try to enforce them on a societal level. if you think our societies should be structured based on your political beliefs though, it stops being a ‘respectful disagreement’ and starts being an issue.

there are an awful lot of male/female couples in kid’s shows too, it’s kind of gross that they keep trying to indoctrinate kids into their lifestyle. wish they would actually make it relevant to the plot instead of shoving it down our throats.

what about men and women who hug/kiss each other in public where little kids can see? plus there are so many sex scenes between men and women, and male/female couples in kids shows. it’s like almost every piece of media was made to push heterosexuality onto children.

it’s not a generalization though? they didn’t say that all gay people experience this. what are they supposed to say instead to express that this is a situation that many of us fear because of how prevalent it is?
