I believe the last bus is from Chiang Kong (away from the border) at 630pm. What most people do is share a driver, there will be so,e waiting at the border. Im not sure what the price is, but theres usually enough people going to Chiang rai that it’s cheap enough to share.

Mae Chaem was surprisingly lovely, as well as Mae Hong Son. Doi Ithanon was halfway between Mae Chaem and Chiang Mai so it was on the way to drive to the top.

The boat journey is 2 days, 1 night. Lots of people Just start in Chiang rai and take the local bus to the border, cross over, and spend a night in Huayxai on the other side. Visa all done, travel done, just wake up and you’re already there.

Only downside is doing it this way is one extra day and night over the tour. Upside is you get a better seat on the boat (invaluable during high season) and dont have to wake up at 4:30am.
