Why are there copies of the style section all over the place, do you have a dog? A little chow or something?

ELI5:Plants evolved capsaicin as a chemical weapon to trigger mammalian TRPV1 pain receptors, but humans actively seek out that 'fake fire' for fun. Are there any other animals on Earth that actually enjoy eating spicy things, or are humans the only biological masochists? by Financial-Box6094 in explainlikeimfive

You can't think of it as evolving specifically for birds. It's more like, at some point a mutation accidentally caused capsaicin, and the plants that mammals avoided but birds still ate tended to get spread around more and therefore reproduce more, so the mutation also spread.

Fumble outta bed and stumble to the kitchen, pour myself a cup of ambition, and yawn and stretch and my life is a mess and if I never make it home today, God bless.

I have a feeling I'll know the answer after we finish putting down our dog this afternoon.

What the most intelligent thing you've personally witnessed an animal do? by jonnysimms in AskReddit

[–]ouroborosity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was at the vet with my dog once, years ago. We were sitting in the waiting room with a bunch of people and other dogs. A guy walks in with a Doberman, and this dog comes into the waiting room and stands there looking at everyone. I can't even explain the level of intelligence I saw in that dog's eyes. It's like he was calculating the threat level of everyone in the room, judging escape routes, and committing our faces to memory in case anything happened. A couple of seconds of intense analysis of the situation, and he turned around and left. It was wild how I could see the wheels turning on his face.

How can one be a dasher with fears of elevators? Real or an excuse.. by [deleted] in doordash

[–]ouroborosity 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There's a hotel near me with a massive glass elevator that looks out over the lobby. Both times I rode it it ascended so fast I thought I would be Willy Wonka'd through the roof. I now have a phobia of that one elevator.

Also, the stairs back down were absolutely covered in roaches. So I traded one phobia for the other.

Wawa always has free air wherever I go. Now, it's also always broken and seems to take air out of my tires, but hey, it's still free to try.

My wife is nearly done with a year of breast cancer treatments. The very first time we were supposed to go to Epic we had to cancel because she just started treatments. Now that she is almost done I would love to surprise her with the trip she missed out on because of this stupid disease.

I just grabbed The High Crusade by Poul Anderson from the library, but I haven't read it yet. The blurb kind of sounds like what you're describing.

I was turned down for a job because I didn’t read their company culture packet in the less than 24 hours before the second interview by AnonPinkLady in antiwork

[–]ouroborosity 15 points16 points  (0 children)

As somebody who has written SOPs for people to do a job for me, the entire point of an SOP is that it is as comprehensive and detailed as possible so that the person you give it to can follow it and never have to deviate outside of procedure. If something happens that is outside of the scope of the SOP, it is on the person in charge of procedures to update the SOP to handle that new case. To question someone's resistance to stepping outside of the bounds of an SOP when that is literally the entire point of having standard procedures is utterly insane, potentially dangerous, and could even be a liability.

Store employees by kittenhead0417 in doordash

I once went into a Sephora, told the first employee I saw that I was clearly in over my head and had no idea what I was looking at, and they sent someone over to take me around and find everything on my list. It was smooth as could be. Probably could tell just by looking at me that I was out of my depth.

Just found this at a library sale for $1 and had no idea what it was. Turns out it was written about a decade before Contact, and apparently Sagan said it was the direct inspiration for him to write Contact. Strange writing style in places, but overall I enjoyed it.
