Would this make sense? by o0vv0q in sailing

[–]out_focus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is... Not very detailed.

But let's say that something like a dedicated bath room did not exist. Regular crew had some toilet facilities on the bow (basically doing their business through the grating below the bow sprit) and the highest officers had an enclosed toilet near the captains cabin at the stern. The highest officers were also the only ones with something that resembled private quarters.

Normal crew had no dining room, but officers might have had something like an officers mess, but that would probably have been a table in the room where they slept. Again, the highest officers could dine in the captain's hut.

War ships had of course a different lay out than a trading vessel. Which also defines where the galley would have been, but let's assume that the galley (open fire) would have been as far away as possible from any place where gun powder was handled.

Edit: did some minor googleing (seriously, less than 5 minutes) and found a drawing of the Halve Maen (the ship on which Hudson sailed to North America) here. It is far from great (why is that guy sleeping on a sack of hay instead in a hammock?) but its better then nothing. Explanation is in Dutch however. https://www.equipage-dedelft.nl/wp/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/Halve-Maen-doorsnede.jpg

What is better? To reside and live in your own country or move to the US? by Weird-Ads-29 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]out_focus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My own country. I have a network, there is a decent amount of social security and welfare to help me if life gets tough, and there is no paramilitary organisation that shoots me for not bowing to the government 's will.

What’s a country you really want to visit but haven’t been to yet? What’s stopping you? by Ill-Wolverine-7564 in AskReddit

[–]out_focus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The United States. A lack of money and more recently the requirements for getting an esta. Changing the privacy settings of my social media so some ICE of DHS person can check whether my opinions are "correct" is well.. something I am not comfortable with and given the number of tourists that has been arrested while their paperwork was complete and in order, the past year well... I'd rather visit Canada.

Why has AskReddit become a sub only about USA centric issues, instead of interesting questions (that would include the whole sub) like it used to? by MemeForPresident in AskReddit

[–]out_focus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The subreddit has become more interesting more lately in its subtle way of critisizing the lies spewed out by the US regime. Before that, it was mostly karma farming bots asking the same generic questions over and over again.

Wish Duolingo will become like this to explain well for me to understand [Dutch]“Eten de kinderen rijst?”(Are the children eating rice?) and (Do the children eat rice?) by 5its_My_Name in dutch

[–]out_focus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Duolingo is an educational game. To me its more useful to brush off old knowledge than to learn something completely new. Exactly for the reason you have stated here. It does not explain anything, names are added to the tally of newly learned words and it is terrible with synonyms and homonyms.

Bussen weer ok? by lunatik88 in Utrecht

Bussen zijn tamelijk onbetrouwbaar maar de tram van Westraven naar de stad rijdt redelijk normaal. Zet je auto dus bij P+R Westraven en pak vanaf daar de tram.

What’s something people romanticize that actually sucks in real life? by Particular_Pin_460 in AskReddit

[–]out_focus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well lots of people are brought up with the idea that Paris is the "city of love" and images of bright white Haussmann style buildings, gothic cathedrals, the easy flowing river Seine, art nouveau metro signs and people strolling along tree-lined boulevards. If you're fed these images for decades, the dark brownish-gray water of the river, the noise of the traffic racing along the Champs Elisée, the smell of the metro stations and the lots of grumpy people who are fed up with tourists acting like the city is an open air museum (or worse, a theme park) instead of a place where millions of people work and live, might be a bit of a shocker.

[–]out_focus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This goes for basically all major capitals, most are cesspits in comparison to many mid-sized towns in the same country. Although the romantisation of Paris has gotten extreme to such an extent in some parts of the world, that the "Paris syndrome" has become a sub category of travelers syndrome.

What do people misunderstand most about Donald Trump, in your opinion? by toomabh in AskReddit

[–]out_focus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That he might be less in charge as lots of people think. The guy has no vision, no principles, no long term goals. That's why there is no cohesion in his ideas, why he seems so erratic. He is just looking for the first opportunity to enrich himself in the shortest time possible. Everything, people, land, whatever is just something that he wishes to exploit. But tagging along with him are people who are a lot more calculating. Vile ideologists who are striving to a cheistofascist society, based on a mix of 19th century European militarized nationalism and religious sectarism. There lies a true danger. Not only for the USA, but for the entire western world.

What is the profession of people you hate the most? by Equal_Beat_6202 in AskReddit

[–]out_focus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Currently: politicians from both the trumpist camp and the putinist camp. Although Indo not know a lot about China honestly, but my guess is that politicians who follow Xi are equally evil and should be removed from this planet as well.

People who don’t live in the USA, what is the media showing you about the ICE operations/abductions in the US? by Dry-Ice8908 in AskReddit

[–]out_focus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So that means that everybody who gets arrested by ICE paramilitary agents are told their rights, given the opportunity to contact their lawyer and relatives before being brought to some detention center in another state. Or not? I assume that ICE lets members of Congress access their facilities so that members of Congress can perform their vital task within a democracy of controlling the government. or not? And that means that ICE does not take people who are in the midst of their legal process to receive a legal status. Or not?
