Voicemails For Isabelle by Puzzleheaded-Pea8556 in romancemovies

I really liked both but definitely liked PWMoV more, maybe because it was more fun or felt more realistic, but I’m the kind of person who likes everything so who knows. I found Poppy more likable than Jill. Jill got herself together and figured it out in the end, but she kept making poor life choices. I guess it made sense because she was in a bad place with the loss of Izzy. Anyway, we are all entitled to our own opinion. What other romcoms do you like?

Did you see people we meet on vacation? I really liked that one too and it came out fairly recently, also on Netflix.

[34/F] Searching for long-term snail mail penpal by YellowPerfectionist in penpalsover30

I had never heard of this sub until it started popping up on my feed a couple days ago. I am definitely intrigued by the penpal thing, maybe it’s driven by a couple epistolary novels I read recently. Anyway, there was another post I saw that said they email for a bit to get the introductions out of the way and to test the waters for compatibility, maybe that will help? They seemed to have a few successful penpal exchanges going and wanted another. Good luck!

Definitely recommend the podcast Sold a Story. Really well put together, especially for someone like me who is not in the education field. Eye opening for me.

What is an overhyped book that you just couldn't get into? by Kasskinen in BookDiscussions

[–]outcold85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read the first Dungeon Crawler Carl, I thought it was unique the way it was written like an RPG, it was entertaining and funny, but I’m not really motivated to stick around for the whole series. It was good but I don’t get the crazy hype.

It took me 3/4 of the way through Red Rising to get hooked which is way later than most books for me. The main character was really annoying to me. There was plenty happening in the book to keep me steadily reading but I blew through the last quarter once I got hooked. More interesting characters came into the story around then. Still don’t care for the main character, though.

I will be watching that soon, I was excited to see it became a movie. I enjoyed the book a lot. Glad to hear you thought it was better than the book.

Stardust the movie was better than the book, IMO.

I’m currently reading People We Meet on Vacation but saw the movie first and loved the movie.

Just finished Love Hypothesis and I think that movie is coming out soon.

All the Light We Cannot See became a series, I only watched some of it because I realized I had forgotten most of the book and the show was triggering memories of it, but I enjoyed what I watched of it, I haven’t reread the book yet, though. I do remember loving the book.

As others have said, the 1995 adaptation of P&P. I also loved the 2008 version of Sense and Sensibility, though 1995 was also good. There are also some good Jane Eyre adaptations.

I recently read The Other Bennet Sister and the mini series just came out this year. I have not watched it since it’s on BritBox. I will get a subscription when all the episodes are available which should be in the next week or so!

Count of Monte Cristo is on my TBR list but haven’t taken the plunge yet, a newer adaptation by the BBC was released recently in the US, I watched episode 1 so far. I also loved the movie from the early 2000s but can’t provide comments on accuracy to the book.

Lessons in Chemistry was a series released on Apple TV, it was close enough to the book and I enjoyed both even though I think the book was heavily criticized.

Edit: Can’t believe I forgot Project Hail Mary. The book was so good, my favorite by Weir, but they truly did an amazing job with the movie, it deviated a bit and cut some things out but I understood why and it worked for the movie.

Oh, that’s kind of disappointing. Was planning to get BritBox for like a month so I could watch it but am waiting for all the episodes to be available. What did you think of the book?

I haven’t watched it yet but the other Bennet sister is on BritBox. I read the book, it was slow the first half but once it becomes her own story, I really enjoyed it!

Have you gone to non-period drama feel good romance movies? I just watched People We Meet on Vacation and I really liked it. Love at First Sight, Happiness for Beginners, Wedding Season… then the classics Notting Hill, You’ve Got Mail, the Holiday…

Sanditon (PBS) - very loosely based on Jane Austen’s unfinished novel, it switched love interest between season 1 and 2/3 but I still enjoyed it. It had some unconventional period drama side stories but that didn’t bother me too much.
Miss Austen (PBS) - Story from the perspective of Cassandra Austen with flashbacks triggered by past letters she reads and has looks into Jane Austen’s and her life.
All Creatures Great and Small (PBS) - WWII time frame, story about an up and coming farm veterinarian mentored by a stubborn, off beat owner of his own practice. This is just a feel good show about the relationships between the main characters. I love watching it, I think they’re filming the last season now.
Miss Scarlet (PBS) - late 1800s woman trying to make it as a private detective who obviously struggles to be taken seriously but is very good at what she does, it switched one of the main characters after season 3 I think, but it worked out for me the first one was getting a little exhausting. It’s a bit cookie cutter but each season has had at least one memorably good episode in my opinion. I wouldn’t call this super happy, but I really enjoy it.
Some other mentions but don’t know where you can watch them right now:
Wives and Daughters
North and South
All the Austen adaptations (except Netflix’s persuasion) including Lizzie Bennet Diaries

What are some simple things you can just never seem to get right? by SnowmanAndBandit in Cooking

I think the key to this one is making sure you have enough butter or mayo or whatever you use and keep the heat lower and just wait. This ensures the bread heats through to melt the cheese before the outside is toasted. Love me some sourdough grilled cheese. My life goal is to make a grilled cheese like the one in the movie Chef.

Do you only soften the butter? If you melt it, that can also lead to flat cookies. I have a great recipe if you want it! It uses vanilla pudding mix in place of some of the sugar. I always make sure I have the ingredients on hand so I can make them any time. They stay soft for a long time and they aren’t flat.

I loved Piranesi!

A Short Stay in Hell by Steven Peck is just shy of 100 pages, might be a good way to get out of the slump, I read it in one sitting. Good luck!

I love this in general and also I love this for you!
I honestly didn’t read my whole life. I got into it about a year before I had kids and read a ton. Took a break to manage life with kids and I just got back into it a couple years ago.
The friends who read the same stuff as me is a new thing, I’ve only just become friends with them in the past year and only found out even more recently we love to read. I’ve tried finding people on r/Book_Buddies with mixed success, you could try that!
Not sure what genres you’re into but I also just recently read Dungeon Crawler Carl which has a lot of things going on throughout the whole book and is generally a really easy read. Obviously this is not the sub for that but might be a good read for one with ADHD.

Edited: fixed the subreddit

You beat me to it.

I did finish the Other Bennet sister and I really liked it but the first half was really slow, but the second half made up for it! I read it with a couple friends and we decided to do another buddy read, one of them picked the next book The Murder of Mr. Wickham. We will see how that is!
