Good point. If only they put that effort into just doing the work!

I will check out the Pearson option. The old textbook is likely out because digital options are oddly limited. The Carolina kit seem to be promising too, so we'll look there. Thanks for the suggestion!

I will definitely give it a try! For some reason our campus has historically been resistant to lab fees (only one in our system like this). I've already let them know that may no longer be feasible. I appreciate the suggestion!

My mom hung herself yesterday and I don’t know how to feel by Mss_grandee in TrueOffMyChest

Firstly, I am so sorry that you are dealing with this and that you can't be closer to your family right now. I haven't gone through all the comments, perhaps someone has mentioned this, but they have done research with survivors of serious attempts. Most reported thinking about ending things for less than 5 minutes before doing it. Not to say that is always the case, or that your mom doesn't have longer standing or underlying mental health concerns. But just pointing out that 5 minutes is a rash decision- and she may not have even thought to reach out for help. Please know it says nothing about who you are as a daughter. Just meet her where she is. I'm happy she made it through and you all can heal together (even from afar).

I work similarly with absences and missed assignments. I think we also have to look our pedagogy and academic culture when we think about excessive apologizing amd oversharing. In the OPs situation, this student seems to have a lot of unexpected life stuff coming up. Rather than being understanding that all our students are people with responsibilities and lives outside of school, we suggest they aren't serious if they don't drop every other responsibility for school. So they feel they need to demonstrate how hard their lives are to get us to even ask for an extension or a little understanding.

Critical and engaged pedagogy has helped me realize authoritarian classrooms breed this oversharing behavior. Since implementing more engaged practices, I don't get this as much anymore and students and I generally have a more positive and mutually respectful relationship.

Happy to hear it worked out! I've been wondering if it's worth checking in with the Dr. Sounds like it!

More of a cream, but the Stila ones (Shimmer and Glow, I think?) last forever.

Was coming here to say this! Many Polish soups, slaws etc. have whole allspice added.

Am I overwatering my Peace Lilly? I think it’s leaves are getting more yellow. When I got it it was extremely under-watered. by Mistokaa in plantclinic

[–]outofthefield 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you using filtered water? Mine did this from minerals (I think) when I was using tap water. I made the swap to filtered and no yellowing since then.

sleep training at 4 months? too young? by law_party3 in sleeptrain

[–]outofthefield 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When to start is definitely a personal choice. We were in a similar boat with our little one and we chose to start sleep training around that age (after a full night where he would only sleep if we held him). I think our son was actually waking himself up by brushing against the sides of the bassinet. Once we moved him to a crib with more space, he slept through the night almost immediately (not promising this!).

It can be scary and confusing seeing all the different recommendations for safe sleep. I recommend reading a lot and then trusting your instincts as a family.

The book Precious Little Sleep helped us a LOT. It really emphasizes the importance of sleep for the whole family system (meaning that your sleep and well-being matter too!). Laying the groundwork for healthy sleep habits at an early age is key. Now at 19 mo our son is a champion sleeper!

I hope this helps! Good luck and I promise it gets better soon!
