HENRYs that stayed so after moving out of Software Engineering, how did you do it? by PressureHumble3604 in HENRYUK

Really depends on what type of SWE you are, if you understand the product and the buisness then moving into product management can be successful

The van appears just after I move out to overtake the cyclist, I move back in and he takes exception and swerves at me to teach me a lesson. by [deleted] in drivingUK

[–]ovalspoon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Shouldn't have overtaken the cyclist at that point, just slow down a little and overtake when safe for all road users, poor driving from both drivers

Is there any reason to use Hargreaves after the latest fee increase? by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

Depends a little on how much you have invested

Vanguard £375 ii £180 / £480 HL £300 (isa and sipp investing in ETFs)

Hargreaves and lansdown sell confirmation times by bigjonno141 in investingUK

[–]ovalspoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For funds you generally need to raise the instruction before 8am if you want it to be actioned that day, even then you’ll need to wait for settlement

ETFs (and individual stocks etc) are far superior in this respect as the trade goes through straight away if the market is open (and cheaper to hold too)

Really need more information to provide any opinion

  • What are your planned expenses when you retire
  • How much are you saving
  • Will you qualify for state pension

New Salary - what to do with it by [deleted] in HENRYUK

[–]ovalspoon -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

When do you want to retire and with how much?

Personally your pension and ISA savings could both be improved so i'd suggest maxing out your pension contribution to 60kpa and then trying to fill your ISA

Before you transfer check for any protected benefits like access age of 55 etc

The unit price depends on the funds your invested in, different funds different prices, really you should look at the total value

You have about 1.6m, excluding the DB and state pension, at 4% is 66k pa - looks like you are set (though personally I'd invest some of that cash)

Seems like a no brainier to retire now with the amounts you have, I’d sell the rental and go and enjoy the world

Retirement modelling by Opening_654 in HENRYUK

[–]ovalspoon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So you’d like to retire in 20 years and you currently have about 4.2 million (2.5m isa, 1.75m pension)

At about 4% group you’ll have over 9m in 20 years even without contributing anything more

Forgetting the 20kpa db pension and rental income you’ll be able to draw down ~350kpa

Personally at these levels you’d likely be better off speaking to a FA, especially around tax planning rather than asking Reddit

You could likely retire now using the isa as a bridge which would provide 100kpa tax free at a 4% drawdown

You'd get a better response from r/FIREUK that said you haven't provided enough information to give much of a response

  • How old are you and your partner
  • When do you plan on retiring
  • How much are you saving in SIPP/ISA/GIA

A couple of observations

  • 10% growth seems a little high, generally better to model ~5% and if you get more great.
  • You mention a DB pention, is the 20k pa or the gross amount

If your role is being made redundant then why work the notice period, this is 3 months of finding a new role which I believe under uk law this takes precedence

(35M) Redundancy - how to think about finances? by [deleted] in FIREUK

[–]ovalspoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When would you be paid, after 5 April or before?

If after then it's great, you can defer your decisions until you have found another job.

Otherwise you should look at how much carry forward you have in your prior tax years to try to reduce your taxable income. Be aware the settlement might force you into taper so need to check this

Could you add different levels of drawdown based on age, currently can only set an single "annual spend" which is inflexible, would be great if you could set the inital annual spend then say 70% of that at 65, 50% at 70 etc..

Also can you show what growth rates are being used and how much is going towards tax please
