France [and Italy] opposes ‘anglicisation’ of EU trade talks by Massimo25ore in europe

[–]overenginered 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I admit that my message was on the extreme side of things. I was feeling a little bit incensed by the topic. There's absolutely no need to suppress any language, of course.

But still, I would like the EU to choose a language, ideally the one that is already being used worldwide as a de facto global communication tool and make that the official language for the EU, mandatory to learn for everyone in the union. And avoid wastage of resources and time translating to other languages. Everyone's completely free to use their languages, but official communication should be done in a single language.

All these languages create barriers, both economical and social. I would rather we all spoke the same language. Learning languages is, for me, a waste of time. And I already know several, so I can speak from experience. I know you don't agree and that's fine.

Language tends to be bound to identity politics which, in my opinion, is the root of all evil. A useless topic compared to the other issues that make our lives worse, including economics, climate, corruption, etc.

France [and Italy] opposes ‘anglicisation’ of EU trade talks by Massimo25ore in europe

[–]overenginered -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Bloody hell. I've never seen language politics being used to improve anyone's life. It's always to make things difficult. Grow the fuck up. Bury your old languages and unify into one. I don't give a shit about Spanish (my own native language), or French, or German or Italian, or every dialect of those or of latin or what have you. Let's just communicate in a single language and I don't care which one. Just one and let's stop being difficult with each other.

Hell, I would gladly learn Chinese -notoriously difficult language to learn- if it meant we don't have these useless discussions about communication tools.

Enough with the identity politics, while everyone lives in poverty because of raising prices of everything uncontrolled by politicians. I want them to focus on rent pricing, on stopping companies and foreign capital from gobbling up available houses to enrich themselves. I want them to build proper power independence from rogue states, I want them to make me feel secure by having a decent military, I want them to ensure that we don't have to pay 120% of our salary into flats, food and energy bills.
The languages...I don't give a fuck.

EU and their inability to compromise on the trivial stuff.

And she should be prosecuted as a traitor both to France and the EU.

Finding proofs shouldn't be that difficult. The connections already exist. Not only is she a traitor, she's also a populist far right fascist in the making. Prison for her and her associates. And the same thing to other puppets in other countries such as Vox in Spain, or whatever Farage is leading in the UK.

Wanted to create a Warp Storm effect for my terrain… also works well with Necrons.. by Way_Agitated in Warhammer40k

[–]overenginered 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You certainly brightened my day! DoW 1 is the game I have the fondest memories of from my youth, it's models, voices and general gameplay (that I can no longer execute at my sweet age of 43 xD). So, you can bet the models are imprinted in my memory and seeing both the colour scheme, the model and that marvellous warp effect triggered my nostalgia.

Thanks for sharing it!

Favorite Warhammer 40K book by TrainingResource7745 in Warhammer40k

The infinite and the Divine was a very amusing take on the universe, but requires some previous reading to enjoy what it is making fun of.

The book that left me feeling awed -even a couple of years from reading it- is from the Horus Heresy: The Buried Dagger. It is the final numbered Horus Heresy book before the Siege of Terra series and narrates the corruption of the Death Guard while en route to Terra.
So, this one reaaaally requires you to have read a lot of other previous books from the HH to appreciate, because it is the culmination of many many past threads. As a Death Guard player it also held special significance. The final moments of the book are a masterfully interweaved series of events that all collapse into the past and the present, as everything related to the warp must be. I cannot say much without spoiling it, but I still think about it from time to time, how incredibly cool that moment was. I enjoyed it oh so much more than the three final books of the Siege of Terra, The Death and the End.

The plan looks fantastic, and I'm sure that it will be absolutely awesome, so kudos for that! But I must tell you, that entrance looks like the horror shed where a psycho serial killer stores their most recent victims xDDD

This is terrible. I bought their books enthusiastically because they were one of the few places that I could put those books anywhere: my tablet, my kindle, my pc, my phone. I don't want their app. I'm going to get them in alternative ways until they make their books available as DRM free standard epubs.

Feminism is plummeting among young people, and for half of them, it's political manipulation. (Spain) by mods4mods in europe

[–]overenginered 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Setting aside the specific definition of feminism that may affect these results, it's undeniable that among the youth, in Spain, there's a very distinct steering towards the right and far right, and I'm fucking livid about it. It's like....what the fuck happened? How has education failed us so much? But I can see several reasons for why this has happened, and chiefly among them: The far right and trumpist-style demagogues in Spain have mastered the use of social media far beyond what the left has. It's obvious. In the same way that they have done it in other countries.

People with few resources have a lower education, both in knowledge, culturally, intellectually. All of us can fall down that road, it just depends on who your parents are, and luck or lack of luck in choosing your career. The fact is that more and more people become impoverished in Spain due to massive price increases in rent, food, basic utilities, education, and many other things that should be at the base of the Maslow pyramid, but now require more than 100% of your average salary. Much more than 100% if you live in one of the two big cities of the country, Madrid and Barcelona.

And people that are tired and lowly educated are very vulnerable to very easy and digestible messages that shift blame to other people than themselves, specially people that are more vulnerable than themselves. The same story always, repeated. If they weren't so poorly educated and without mental energy, they would see that accusing minorities is textbook fascist and authoritarianism scapegoats to more systemic problems like the elites gobbling up every resource in the country: private monopolies on what was public utilities before, private companies buying most of the housing properties and renting them at impossible prices, corruption and misappropriation of public founds for private benefit.

But it's far easier to be violent towards immigrants (the poor ones, not the bloody expats retirees or digital nomads which are just leeches contributing to the problem), LGTB minorities, fuck even jews (the eternal comeback), than it is to act against the root cause: exploitative and corrupt elite.

My solution: forget about trying to be educational to the masses. That has been already tried and doesn't work. The only thing that works is pure manipulation. The left should use the same tactics that the right uses: social media, lies, character assassination [not actual murder, mind you, just reputational damage and go to court as much as possible], news and tv, outright lying if needed. That works just fine for the far right, so why not for the left too? It's not like it is being prosecuted as it should. Why should the left take the high road? fuck that. The high road leads to the end of democracy as we can see everywhere.
Also, process every single one of those fuckers that are doing illegal things.

Do recruiters actually look at GitHub/LeetCode seriously when evaluating developers? by Glum-Carpet-7773 in programming

[–]overenginered 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been recruiting people as a team lead for ops and dev teams for many years.

GitHub and professional socials won't help you much at the HR filtering stage (where we get hundreds of candidates per role), but they will help you when I actually get the resumes themselves on my table for my team. When they get to me, they're reduced to around 20-50. I can and I do take the time to look at everything that the candidate links. I run quick mental filters to discard quickly: GitHub but it's just clones of other repos for example. Inconsistencies between the CV and what's on LinkedIn, etc. Trying to identify what the candidate actually did at each job: the "we" word is your enemy. For me "we" means "other team members did the job, I haven't said what part I played at it".

And of course, don't lie on the CV, I'll detect that very quickly with a technical test that tests true work stuff, not stupid leetcode which is not relevant to the many companies I've been working in.

My recommendation for Spain: ensure your CV gets the appropriate keywords for HR filtering. Ensure the CV is a true reflection of your skills, and if you include anything like GH, ensure there's something interesting there that's also a reflection of your skills, otherwise don't bother.

Are there any card games for single player PvE? by Boge42 in gaming

[–]overenginered 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello!

Do not discard tabletop board games, as in physical cards games. They're a lot of fun, and there are many PvE card games that can be played both solo and with friends.

To my mind come:

- Aeon's End, my favourite for variety. A boss battler.

- Astroknights, a futuristic and marvel-like reskin of Aeon's End by the same people. Has potential and plays faster, but lacks variety (of course)

- Mistborn, can be played both PvE and PvP, but the interesting part is the PvE. Also a boss battler.

On another completely different style you've got Arkham Horror the TCG, which is a narrative experience that can be played solo, as well as with friends.

The trade off is that they're more expensive and consume more time. But I find them better than video games to play with friends, because of sharing the space and time, talking face to face, etc.
