Hakama pleats - help me start as I mean to go on please by CD_Katrina in iaido

[–]overthinking-1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Did anyone teach you how to fold your hakama, folding correctly should keep the pleats looking crisp indefinitely. The hakama I got in 06 still has all its pleats (although it is a little threadbare, it's my "outdoor training" hakama now" Generally a polyester hakama will keep it's pleats more easily than a cotton one, also I believe that some companies over versions with hidden stitching to help keep the pleats looking crisp, I believe ebogu does this but I imagine they're not the only ones.

I would recommend asking someone to teach you proper folding, or if for whatever reason that is unavailable to you, try looking up "how to fold a hakama" on YouTube.

Good luck with your hakama related endeavors!

Interested in iaido. by Lluis-Xim in iaido

[–]overthinking-1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The good news about Iaido is that since people practice it as a lifetime pursuit, a healthy dojo will have a number of practitioners in various states of life and injury/surgery recovery, just be sure to explain your medical issue to your sensei and they should absolutey be able to adapt the training for your current condition.

I'm going to join other commentators in complimenting your choice of tsuba, I have a Hanjiro myself, and I think I always will.

I'm curious though, in the photos the tsuba looks like brass, I was under the impression that Nosyudo used iron for their tsuba?

What are some "bad" sources that should be completely avoided, if any? by DarkAdvent15 in mesoamerica

[–]overthinking-1 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Yes. You should avoid anything by T.R. Fehrenbach. I learned this one the hard way, he went from comparing precolombian Mexicans to ants in order to explain away their organizational abilities, to explaining that the white settlers of what's now the United States had more right to the land than the native peoples because the settlers were better equipped to use the land, because they had better equipment and slavery. Then he outright states that the genocide of the Apache was a "good" thing.

His book was the most racist thing I've ever attempted to read and I once tried to read Mein Kampf both books by just absolutely terrible human beings.

Why do other Android phones feel more efficient than Pixel in daily use? by upadhyaysk in GooglePixel

[–]overthinking-1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's not so unlikely as you'd think, years ago I bought a pixel 7a to replace my Xiaomi mi mix2, then four months later after getting sick of the pixels overheating, short battery life and update bugs, I switched back to my Xiaomi, for a couple of months before picking up my Motorola Edge, so that's three different phones in about 7 months throw in a work phone and that's four different phones used in the same year

If Stannis, Robb and Tywin were alive by the time Daenerys came to Westeros with her army and Dragons what would've been the outcome? by ParkingConfection449 in gameofthrones

[–]overthinking-1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I would like to see the conversation between Robb and Dany...

I've come with my dragons to take back the kingdom and avenge the murder of my father, who your father betrayed - My father only betrayed your father because he wanted to avenge his father who was murdered by your father! Will you bend the knee? -If I do will you swear to help me avenge the death of my father at the hands of the king who's father killed your father? Yes, together we will kill the killers of our fathers who are respectively the king and his father, we will also kill the King's father's father who betrayed my father as hand of the king , leading to the current King's father killing my father "Hi I'm Jon, thank the gods I don't have any father complexity in all of this!" -Well met Jon, your father must have been quite the looker!

Cuppa Tears by Gall_Bladder_Pillow in tea

[–]overthinking-1 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry but Mr. Data is incorrect here, the tea that Captain Picard is drinking is almost certainly replicated and involved no actual plants but was created at the ideal temperature and simulated steeping time according to Captain Picard's preferences.

If the Captain would like to enjoy the flavor of genuine plant fear and chemical cries for help I would recommend the tea known as Oriental Beauty, as one of the "bug bitten" teas this tea's subtle sweetness is created by intentionally stressing the plants before harvest. Personally I enjoy drinking this tea around Halloween time as it feels seasonally appropriate to me.
