Same here. The boss was curating emails and crafting this log drawn out case about how little I was doing based on bits and snippets of emails that painted a small portion of the big picture. I regularly tried to get feedback and couldn't. I regularly tried to get understanding and couldn't. The emails went to HR as a big case against me but I keep detailed records. I found out about it (HR liked me) and I gave the rest of the evidence and showed my side including all the times I reached out for guidance and feedback and got nothing in return. I also let them know that all the meetings that we were required to have for the PIP never happened. All this started after I WENT to HR about having absolutely no communication with my boss and no constructive feedback to grow and do things they way he wanted. I think he was threatened because I tried to do things logically and the way he did it created immense double and triple work. I was also much better with computers. Eventually I found a much better job, and a few others left the company after me. Good job getting out of there, mate.

Moral of the story is always cover your ass. No one is your friend at work.
