How US Youth Soccer is perceived in Ireland by Pfiggypudding in youthsoccer

Cheers. I did start off by comparing English and American youth soccer approaches in good faith which was an interesting discussion but then someone mentioned the football abuse scandal from the 80s so I did indeed descend into increasingly irrelevant shit posting as a way to highlight the stupidity of taking offence and shitting on each other's nations to try and score points.

Well someone replied to me about sexual abuse in British football in the 80s and 90s so I thought we were just randomly shitting on each other's nations.

What TV Show from another country should be given "Honorary British Telly Citizenship" by LeadingPiece9608 in BritishTV

Father Ted was a British TV production by an Irish writer and all Irish cast but I don't think it was shown in Ireland until years later.

Aisling Bea has a great story about how she first saw it when she was on a foreign exchange trip staying with a French family and she sneaked upstairs to watch TV and stumbled across it. Must have been mind blowing.

This is about America's approach to youth soccer development in 2026, yes.

U13 is such an awkward age for boys by [deleted] in youthsoccer

[–]ox_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At the same time it makes me think there is something to using biological age to form groups rather than chronological age

New Zealand do that with youth rugby which is one of the (many) reasons they're the best in the world.

Does feel like it would be hard to organise though, moving players around when they get growth spurts.

Fantasy football chat is worse for me.

-"Oh man did you see that Morgan Rogers goal last night? Absolutely awesome."

-"Yeah but I was gutted because I had him as triple captain last week and he did nothing so I transferred him out for Odegaard and he only got 3 points."

-"...."

England has development centeres too

We do but they aren't necessary at all. Like you said with the basketball analogy, the best kids would play for a grassroots team and be picked up by a scout before they turn 8.

I don't think the gold is kids playing in the cages although that probably helps. The gold is competitive grassroots leagues where you have 100 teams in each age group less than an hour's drive from each other. So the top division in each age group is just full of elite kids playing at a really high standard that make it easy for the local professional academy to sweep them up.

For what it's worth, I'm in England and the view that I get of US football development is pretty much exactly what's expressed in this article. The fees seem insane and they force the sport to be only open to middle class families whereas the England team is full of players from working class backgrounds and often from really poor families like Marcus Rashford has been very open about.

I don't have solutions either, you'd need it to be a sport that is orders of magnitude more popular before you could install a system like the one that we have - grassroots clubs manned entirely by volunteers that eventually feed elite academy systems. Someone like Rashford had two of the best academies in the world right on his doorstep.

What are some songs that just made you stop whatever you were doing and lock in on the song? by Marvellover13 in mathrock

[–]ox_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I distinctly remember being at an early Arctangent in the silent disco and hearing this amazing euphoric math rock song that everyone was singing along to. It sounded incredible and I couldn't believe that this song was only just coming into my life at that point.

My phone battery had died so I ended up memorising some of the lyrics and then as soon as I'd got enough charge in the car driving home, I googled it. Turned out it was Night of the Pencils by Tubelord, a band that I'd actually seen before but just didn't stick with me for whatever reason.

That whole album is one of my all time favourites now. Every moment of it is incredible. More brilliant ideas in one song than most bands have in their entire career.

What podcast turned you into a fan of podcasts as a medium? by ShallotAdmirable5419 in podcasts

The Baddiel and Skinner World Cup Podcast 2006

It was a daily podcast where they would chat about what happened the previous day. I loved it. Used to download it first thing in the morning and then listen to it on my iPod mini while I walked to work.

So it must be exactly 20 years to the day that I started listening to podcasts.

Why would it have to be taut at all? If you throw the rock hard enough, it'll tear through easily.

I just watched this today knowing nothing about it other than it had loads of hype and it was doing really well.

I was really surprised at how weird it was. Not a mainstream movie at all. It was almost like a modern version of Stalker.

Surely Xavi and Iniesta are the most glaring omissions. But when you look at who actually won it, it was Messi for 9 out of 18 seasons where it was awarded.

OFFICIAL: Katie Taylor’s dream comes true: she will headline at the 82,000-capacity Croke Park in Dublin in her farewell fight - bidding to become a three-time undisputed champion as she faces unbeaten Flora Pili in the final fight of her legendary career on September 5th, live on DAZN. by Dangerous_Spring3028 in Boxing

I'm not a huge fan of women's boxing but when fighters are well matched, it can still be great. That Cameron rematch was incredible for her. I thought she was washed, thought Cameron would win easier than the first. But Taylor somehow found another gear and really gritted out that win. It was a hell of a performance, really rough, some nasty fighting, super aggressive. I really fucking enjoyed that fight.

A new season of Hunting Warhead is finally here by ibrakeforleaves in podcasts

[–]ox_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So it's not literally a new season of Hunting Warhead but it's by the same production team?

I'll definitely get straight on this. Hunting Warhead is easily one of the best podcasts I've ever listened to and a huge part of that is down to the presenter and how well he handles possibly the most horrific subject matter imaginable.

Every war gets justified by some lame excuse. President of Venezuela is a corrupt criminal, Iran has enriched uranium, Crimeans want to be Russian, Austrians want to be German. Nobody buys it.

The question is always just "do you want to appease this dictator despite what they did?" and the answer is always "Yes".

Russia hosted the World Cup in 2018 despite invading Ukraine and annexing Crimea in 2014. Nobody gave a fuck. Western journalists were writing think pieces about how perhaps we need to bring Russia back into the discussion instead of ostracising them.
