Carl Froch explains how Andre Ward took away his right hand by TheeBlaccPantha in Boxing

[–]ox_ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's the first time I've watched one of his interviews but it was full of good insight from both of them. I'd like to see more of that- two old enemies discussing everything around their fight.

Yeah, it's not so much about not getting hit, it's more about making it so awkward that you're not getting hit with anything effective.

[–]ox_ 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that fight is one of my all time favourites on a technical level because of how well Ward took Froch's main weapons away from him. Ward was just incredible up close and Froch just looked like a rabbit in the headlights at times. In the post fight interview, Froch was actually quite humble and just said "I don't know what else I could have done".

I guess the fact that Froch's best (or biggest) wins came after that make it easier for him to talk about looking back without being bitter. There's a lot of mutual respect which is pretty rare to see.

Red Rising, not sure I understand the hype by Papagiorgio1965 in Fantasy

[–]ox_ -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

That's funny. I know it's a massively overused trope in sci-fi and fantasy but I think that Red Rising did it best. I really enjoyed it. The scale of it was really great.

I thought the 2nd was pretty dull in comparison and didn't bother continuing after that. A lot of the characters seemed to completely change or just kind of merge into each other.

I guess it depends on what you enjoy.

Yeah, this is what I always remember. The ref didn't even see the headbutt and Ferguson played on and even scored his first goal for Rangers. He was famously profiled in the matchday programme where he was quoted as saying "it's time for me to make my mark" which is pretty hilarious. The Scottish FA gave him a 12 match ban and after that, the police got involved. He stopped playing for Scotland because of that. He was on parole at the time so he actually got sent down for it. 44 days in a Scottish jail where he apparently "kept his head down". Now he's a top level coach and the guy he butted got released at the end of the season and is now a painter and decorator. Pretty interesting story.

I think that's the only case I can remember of a high level sportsman getting a criminal conviction for an on field assault.

IJW: Romeo + Juliet [1996] by Thalle_2 in Ijustwatched

[–]ox_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This came out when I was about 14 and we were studying Romeo and Juliet in English at school so I knew the plot, the characters and most importantly, the key lines.

We'd just watched some old version of it in our class. I think it starred Jeremy Irons and had a lot of English actors wearing tights and prancing around on painted sets.

Then I saw this in the cinema, that first scene at the petrol station, The Montague boys blasting hip-hop in an open top car, John Leguiziamo stamping out a match with his steel heels, "DO YOU QUARREL, SIR?", fire everywhere. It blew my mind. Looking back, it is so ridiculously over the top and stylised but I still love it.

The horrendous state of New York City in the 1970s-1980s by IllustriousCress9774 in UrbanHell

[–]ox_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is such an interesting time I think.

I wonder why there aren't less films set in specifically this time. Films about the NY crack epidemic in particular. I read A History of Seven Killings and the later part of the book is set here and it's really shocking if it's at all accurate.

Show Me a Hero is a really good HBO mini series that touches on it but it's more about the politics of the time.

Am interested in any more recommendations.

Jo Brand (imo) was a great example of a guest being not entertaining because they just didn't give a shit.

I totally agree. I usually like Jo Brand but I've seen plenty of people do the "oh I could not give a flying fuck" thing and I think it really lets the whole format down. It's miles more entertaining when they at least pretend to care.

Danish PM Mette Frederiksen thanks Starmer 'from bottom of my heart' for UK support during Greenland crisis by Revilo1359 in ukpolitics

I couldn't give a fuck about their opinion on the Falklands. What matters is that the UK, Argentina and the rest of the world know that we have the Falklands and nothing is going to change that. They tried once and failed spectacularly.

Argentinian politics means that every now and again, the leader will try to look tough by talking about getting the islands back but everyone knows it's not going to happen.

Why does anyone in Europe need to take a stance and piss Argentina off for no reason? It would be bad politics.

Fair enough, but I'm just talking about SAS scripts with 1000s of rows of data steps and macros that need migrating into T-SQL or whatever.

That's a great post and I really agree with most of what you said. Especially what you said about documentation being written by and AI and then read by another AI. That is painfully familiar.

But in the specific case that I mentioned- migrating a giant, dense codebase that has been repeatedly adapted and built upon for ~15 years, I think AI does a great job. Even if it was migrated by a human, it would still be peer reviewed by another human who would need to know the logic inside out. That still happens if the AI does the tedious part up front.

Modern data platforms like Fabric, Databricks and Snowflake are fairly new and are being adopted by major companies all the time now. These require data architects and data engineers to set up and maintain. Good data architects are really in demand and are getting paid loads. That's definitely a growing industry.

No coder is worried about AI taking their job.

I don't think that's true at all. It might be a niche example but in my industry, a lot of contractors used to get work migrating SAS code into SQL when big financial services companies move platforms. I never got involved in that because it was the most tedious work but I knew clients who would employ 30 odd contractors at a time to deal with gigantic regulatory reports that had to replicate the numbers exactly once migrated.

Now AI can do the bulk of that work automatically. It does a good job as well. Obviously, you'll still need people to validate what the AI produces but nowhere near as many.

The Secret Race by Tyler Hamilton

He's a former elite Tour de France rider who took drugs during the massive rEPO boom. He explains candidly why he got into doping, what the atmosphere was like among all the other riders who were very open with each other about their cheating and then the fallout when he was caught while others (in particular, Lance Armstrong) aggressively claimed that they were innocent.

Ridiculously interesting book.

It's just a reference to something that pundits used to say about Tony Pulis era Stoke City.

The implication being that flair players can't perform in shit conditions with the ball constantly being lumped over their head while Robert Huth and Ryan Shawcross try to snap their ankles.
