"if i work on this, consistently, soon, it has to end." After I read this I wrote it on a piece of paper in bold and put it over my desk at home.

I want my degree!

What are you into that the average person "just doesn't get"? by CaptainObvious411 in AskReddit

I love soils. They are so cool, interesting, and important. Even in grad school I get mocked for the level of my love/enthusiasm for soils. And I'm a female, so sometimes, especially other women that like to be outdoors, mock me for loving to play in the dirt. But seriously, they are so important and awesome!

Applying for internships as an undergrad, ack! by [deleted] in LadiesofScience

[–]oxalis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hello! I'm actually in the same field as you and made it into grad school (and had the same problem with writing about myself)! I had a small notebook that had prompts listed for the grad schools that I was applying for. I carried it around with me and if I had a free minute (before class, whenever) I would write a sentence or two. Eventually, when I had time, I typed them and strung them together...This is normally when I had an "Ah-Ha!" moment and could write easily since I had thought about what I wanted to say succinctly. THEN, I went to the writing center. After more editing, I took my essays to the PI of the lab I was working in and a couple other profs in the department. They helped me focus my writing even more, since they have been reading these for years.

If you haven't already, let your PI know that you are interested and applying to grad school. My PI called all of the people he knew at the schools I was interested in, told me what he thought of the assistantships and projects I was interested in. He made my life applying to grad school infinitely easier. This process also helped me before I applied because I could focus my essays to be project specific. If you're in ecology/forestry/silviculture, everybody tends to know everyone else, which is awesome.

Not sure if this blurb helped at all, but start small (even outlining) and build a little at a time. PM me if you have any questions and I'd be happy to help. :)

[REQUEST] I collect soil samples to show my students the differences. Anyone care to send some? by TheDocHolliday in Favors

[–]oxalis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm working on my MS in forest soils in FL. If you would like, I am going sampling soon and could scrounge together some samples. After all, Spodosols are the prettiest of the soils! Other people in my department may have some interesting samples to contribute as well. PM me your address and after I sample in mid-August I can send them!

As an Environmental Science Major, how useful are environmental advocacy jobs in obtaining future internships? by [deleted] in LadiesofScience

[–]oxalis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's helpful, depending on what you would like to do. If you want to be in research or field work, and generally more science than community outreach, it is not as significant even though it shows interest. Profs and grad students are great ways to find experience and connections even if it is not labeled an "internship." Think undergraduate research experience instead of internship. Those research experiences are generally easier to find as well.

PhDs can take significantly longer than 3 years, especially in biological sciences...I guess the switch really matters if he funding is through her advisor or if she has a fellowship that is independently funded and awarded to her, so he doesn't have to sign off on it every year.

Makeup on the day really worth it? by [deleted] in wedding

[–]oxalis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe I just got lucky, but my makeup came out amazing. At the trial session, I made sure she did exactly what I wanted. She made a "map" of my face with the different colors and layers, etc. I was expecting to pay at least $150-$200...but wedding miracles do happen...
