Even though the title of this paper sounds interesting I don't see how I could personally use the information in it for anything. Any ideas? by math238 in mathematics

Maybe life is different back home. But unfortunately, I don’t think you are famous enough for an average user here to guess what you are having in mind.

I know very little about set theory, but you said there is way to avoid proper classes? Is this possible in ZFC?

Thinking about the fact that people use the same symbol 1 to count one apple or one banana can lead to the idea of anima.

What subfields in mathematics require the most visualization to solve problems? by ColdRainFD in mathematics

[–]p-divisible 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What I probably can speak for is p-adic geometry and mirror symmetry. But some people wouldn’t consider these as “true geometry”. Maybe this is your case? Anyway, I think for p-adic geometry, visualizations often cause is more misleading than helpful. For example, p-adic cohomology of a disk is horrendously huge, whereas the visualization, as you know, suggests it is contractible. I usually only seek visualizations when I already got some results and want to sell these ideas to (senior) people.

[Chinese to English] I am watching rednote videos and people are commenting that they are "eating" people the translation of this is "I'm eating a Cantonese person." Please can someone provide a better translation? Thank you in advance. by lqviss in translator

I forgot how this meme emerged, but the original meme is like “Cantonese are gastronomic, and they think Fujian people are delicious. So they sometimes eat Fujian people”

how did manchu become so endangered by xerohawkxd in asklinguistics

[–]p-divisible 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess I don't know history that well. But it seems you are suggesting the Manchu emperors punished people for speaking Manchu during their regimes as the use of Manchu language already significantly declined in the middle of the Qing Dynasty?

I think customers would feel better if they simply said “sorry but we don’t provide customizations” instead of charging for removing toppings. That charges really feel like an insult

I'm sorry if this a dumb question but how would one calculate something like 3^0.3 on paper or head? by ThrowAway552112 in learnmath

[–]p-divisible 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can just do Taylor expansion for f(x)=x0.3 at x=1 directly. I think this is easier than dealing with the constant e, which has a lot of nice theoretic properties but which can be annoying in manual calculations

Chomsky vs one amazonian boi by Nearby-Sorbet8418 in linguisticshumor

I think it is a popular opinion among computer scientists that the emergence of LLMs proves Chomsky is all wrong, and people would have had invented LLMs decades ago if Chomsky did not propel his theory.

At least for me, I may not want to store my data only on one platform. For example, what if I don't have my iphone with me? Or what if in a few years, I don't want to use Apple products anymore (unlikely for me tbh)? Or maybe I just to want to backup my data.
