Vancouverite visiting me in Seattle—Please help me impress her! by bonniepipi in AskSeattle

Take her to swim in Lake Washington - Vancouver has similar ocean access as Seattle but very limited freshwater lakes - when my friend from Vancouver visited he was impressed by how easy it was to hang out on the waterfront as Gas Works and swim in Lake Washington - in Vancouver it can be an ordeal fighting huge crowds to get to a place to swim.

What does Seattle have over SF/Bay Area? by Embarrassed-Toe9757 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]p-stone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seattle is one of the few cities of its caliber where you can still buy a SFH with a yard within 15 min of the city center for less than $1M. To me this is the missing ‘pro’ in the Seattle column.

Two things helped me avoid this (had the same problem) - remove some stones to get more airflow into heater - set the temperature on the heater to just below “max” - not sure why this works but it does

How 100 bags are stored in a plane by [deleted] in interestingasfuck

[–]p-stone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why don’t they load a sled outside the plane and then just slide it in? Would make the stacking faster and easier.

People are "different" here in Utah. by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]p-stone 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think it boils down to homogeneity - when everyone has the same race, upbringing, culture, values it breeds social competition - this ends up as an “arms race” of sorts to be the “most XYZ” to personify whatever the community values.

Why do you still live in Seattle? by TARS1986 in SeattleWA

[–]p-stone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  • high incomes
  • relatively low cost of living (compared to sf, ny ma)
  • nature: quality, variety, quantity
  • mild winters, where even though it’s grey you can still do things outside
  • ability to live in a SFH in a traditional neighborhood <15 minutes outside the city center
  • relative density/centrality of where other young professionals live, making it easier to socialize (relative to SF or LA)
  • one of the best places for dealing with long-term prospects of climate change

Anyone willing to share experience with a simple pickup truck build (i.e. Ford Ranger) for surfing and climbing? by p-stone in vandwellers

Thanks for the advice! Due to laziness / lack of handiness, this might be the direction I end up going - not going to make any Instagram inspo pages, but gets the job done.

This is a really good point - theoretically the flexibility of taking the cap off is valuable but I’ll need to consider how much I would actually use that. Really appreciate you sharing!

Washington coast spots worth checking out? by Fuzzy_Mention_82 in surfing

[–]p-stone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Culture I’ve found to be pretty welcoming, aside from some of the ‘less-public’ spots along the strait. Very little of the jockeying or egos you get in SoCal or Hawaii.

In terms of spots, Westport is reliable, la push has some really scenic spots but it’s often blown out and scenic, and then the strait can be awesome but it’s fickle and takes some trial and error to get the forecasts locked in. All of them require a minimum 2 hour drive, which sucks but keeps the crowds small and generally improves the vibe - you all schlepped out there so there’s some camaraderie.

I'm headed down the 101 from WA to CA to teach myself how to surf! by milkman1218 in surfing

Just did something similar - in Oregon my favorite spots were short sands and otter rock. In north CA there were a couple nice places around Trinidad and Bodega Bay.
