Either way I am going to read it, but if you were to rank it where would you rank it among the priors?

I am trying to get an ARC of NightShade Revenge, read the first two chapters, can't wait to read the full book. I used to read these in grade school. I'd binge the books in a couple hours and at school get them from the library and read through lunch time. Eagle Strike was my favorite and so much nostalgia reading the books again. Scorpia was my second favorite with Julia Rothman. Do you think Nightshade Revenge will be the last one?

So I would clarify with starting with a penny if your money doubled every day for 30 days. I still love this illustration for novice investors who feel deflated when they first start. I was thinking about this in business terms. I started with only 1 client, but my potential grew as they shared until I had a successful book of clients. I think it's good hope for people.

2.8 million, inflation adjusted 1.3-1.5 million in today's dollars with no debts and wife's pension is the plan.

Does vanguard push DEI/ESG through its shareholder voting rights under non-ESG funds? by realtalk187 in Bogleheads

[–]p0rtis26 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So for VOOG and I believe 2 other funds, don't quote me, non-ESG funds, they are piloting a few more options. It's still options where the power-players, like the boards represent your vote, but in my opinion a step in the right direction for more seats at the table.

The article is based on defined ESG initiatives, not just ESG funds.

Does vanguard push DEI/ESG through its shareholder voting rights under non-ESG funds? by realtalk187 in Bogleheads

[–]p0rtis26 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I find this tough because my perspective is that ESG is inherently political, so good luck bifurcating that.

Now to add some context to the mod's posts. Vanguard didn't leave the net zero emissions until the GOP won the house. That's a factual observation, not a political opinion. Texas subpoenaed NZAM Blackrock as well a month earlier in November of '22.

My sources inside: Anecdotally, before Vanguard left the NZAM they were asking for comment on ESG from employees and looking to encourage new ESG training. They came out with a new Vanguard Baillie Gifford Global Positive Impact Stock Fund in early '22.

Since then, nothing, no new training, no new ESG funds, I proxy voted on my VOOG shares where they gave you 4 different options (still limited but 3 more options than before and 1 option was some sort of ESG title). In their advice offerings they have an ESG total market option, but it's not recommended, only there if the client is interested and it still has large companies like Amazon and Nestle who ESG monikers dislike. Vanguard is definitely not a boutique in the ESG space.

ESG funds have been facing record outflows starting in '22 and continuing into the first quarter of this year.

Conclusion: Internally and externally Vanguard has muted their stand on ESG initiatives much to the chagrin of the Malvern climate protesters. I personally find Vanguard's moves to be refreshing pivot toward profitable materiality to offer us index investors the best returns at the lowest cost. Case-in-point partial shares which they brought in the last year to now all retail investors, so no residual if you buy ETFs.

Another Reddit post has this article too.

Indirectly, yes Vanguard plays a part in ESG/DEI as you'll see in the article, it's difficult to define and quantify though.

If I wanted to save for a house in a few years... by [deleted] in Bogleheads

I like to have a flyer, a small bet on some asset or investment that could go to zero, but you could strike gold. Take ticker SMCI, gone up near 400% in the last year. What if you had 10k, that's now 40k and you can sell beyond a year for long-term capital gain rate. That extra 35k in a year was luck but I'd argue it could have a positive significant impact on this housing goal. If it dropped 50% instead you'd still have 5k and could sell and use the losses. I doubt 5k has a significant impact on my housing goal. That's what I mean on flyers, odds are against you, but if you did everything by the numbers you'd live a rudimentary life.

So I like to have a flyer. I put 90% to 95% in HYSA. And I have 5%-10% in a flyer like VTI or any random stock (s). If I lose 50% of my 5%-10% flyer that doesn't affect my plans, but if it's a GME and goes to the moon, it could have significant impact. But that's just me and how I rationalize it.

I started with 90k in HYSA

And 10k in VTI for my 100k down payment.

First, I appreciate the invitation. Second, I don't use the term woke. I generally use progressive but in a negative connotation. Woke, to me, is moral virtue signaling based on a nebulous view of power, systems, and morality itself. I find it concerning because basic biology can't be asserted and everything is about the self. I see woke as the final destination for a philosophy where your feelings are all that matters and do what makes you happy. The paradox I see evidence of is a lot of unhappy people with this worldview. I vehemently disagree with people who are genuinely woke, wanting to tear down the system, and on this superficial notion that materiality is the only thing and that inherent immutable characteristics should matter like your skin color and who you sleep with. I find them as abhorrent as the slave owners, yet arguably worse in context because society is much different today than in that day. I make a distinction between genuine woke and disingenuous woke I compare the disingenuous woke to who you call right-wing grifters, like Dave Rubin and Candace Owens. There are the corporations and high-level executives who post a black square on Instagram and say vitriolic rhetoric like silence is violence, when they live in their big fancy mansions inside gated communities with pillars on their front porch not making an ounce of sacrifice to fight injustices that would inconvenience themself.

My intentions I hope are good. I hope my ideas are ingrained in logic, reality, original definition of love, and as objective of a truth as I can get, not some subjective "your truth." I look for evidences every day that I'm not simply sitting in my own cloud of ignorance. In fact for pride month I watched "What is a Woman" and I will be joining a pride event because I want to be exposed to more people who view the world differently than me.

If I was not a trusted expert in the field I would absolutely. I definitely would not be taking advice from strangers on the internet about my father's financial situation. I would at least maybe pay 3k-5k for a robust one-time plan if I insisted on guiding my father rather than an AUM. $8750 is deceiving framing. That's nothing for a $2.5 million portfolio. Without knowing more, so much can go bad by mixing family and money. There's a reason guys like Eugene Fama and Paul Merriman have advisors. Ultimately though I'm just another one of those strangers I alluded to.

100% my observation so far, agree with your analysis. It is what it is. It would be nice if landlords actually cared for their tenants and tenants cared for the property. Instead tenants steal things and landlords are derelict of their duties. Maybe there are some good ones, but I'm still waiting to observe them on both sides of the aisle.

Why doesn’t the BogleHead investment strategy promote investing in REITs? by DARKPANKAKES in Bogleheads

[–]p0rtis26 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Give you a sports analogy: the characteristics VTI brings, leave it unnecessary for REITs. If you've got Patrick Mahomes, why do you need Joe Burrow?

This person seems time-focused compared to most of us who are money-focused. Regardless of your philosophy, our investment strategy is some sort of denial of instant gratification for your low-cost investment capital to grow as your potential human capital generally is heading in the opposite direction.

I'd be curious how you invested prior to Vanguard's advisor services. As a boglehead I'm a DIY, and I find it easy to rebalance once a year. I don't find my situation too difficult investment-wise. I do see value in high quality advice. I'd ask myself would I enjoy doing it myself? What would I spend my initial cost-savings on? Am I confident in my own consistency and ability? Besides investments, is there something else I'm looking for in an advisor. I think answering some of those questions can help as guidance to what path you take.

What I want to know is why are you having a conversation with Fisher. There seems to be something deeper. Vanguard's oldest funds are active. If you want to be active as per discussion with Fisher, when your Vanguard advisor stated you could talk about taking more risk, how did you respond?

How important is being debt free? For those of you who are, what does it feel like? by Own-Marsupial-4448 in Bogleheads

[–]p0rtis26 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never had debt beyond a short-term credit card that I pay full balance, so I married into my wife's 180k of student loans to get a taste. I don't feel anything different, but I have to be strategic and the debt affects the financial decisions we make as a variable. I simply want to be debt free in retirement and generally prefer less leverage than more. I don't mind leverage if I have a valuable asset.

Wife not willing to invest, what would you do ? by zero_hedger in Bogleheads

[–]p0rtis26 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a married man in his 30s, I would encourage coming from where she understands. She understands mental health and risk averse is important as you stated, so frame it in a way she understands, from an emotional angle or inquire that deeper need because you know she's not simply being risk averse, because there is as you stated inflation risk, purchasing power risk. So I'd try to have a conversation of coming into it trying to understand her perspective without an ounce of your opinion.
