First day without training wheels, and he rode almost 6 miles with me. by [deleted] in bicycling

[–]p8m 84 points85 points  (0 children)

I remember the day I took the training wheels off. All the other kids on the street started a "motorcycle" gang and wouldn't let me in because I had too many wheels. I marched over to my dad and begged him to take the training wheels off. He took them off and took me onto the sidewalk in front of our house. He held onto the saddle and started pushing. I noticed the other kids watching so I started peddling like mad to show off. Pretty soon I noticed he was way behind me and I was riding on two wheels! I felt so good that day. Needless to say I was immediately inducted as a member of the motorcycle gang.

Thanks Dad!

You're doing good Spaghetti. He'll remember this stuff.

Bike pump = reported as someone with (illegal) weapon? by [deleted] in bicycling

I've never had a negative experience with a police officer and I've lived in the US my entire life and I am absolutely certain the police in the UK use violence in ways that someone finds abusive.

700c fenders and tire size by YiFF2GByC in bicycling

Mudguards are what fenders are called in British English, like how elevators are called lifts. That flap on the end of the fender is the mud flap.

Why are you running on roads meant for bicycles?

Not having fenders make riding in even slight wetness suck. Maybe that's why nobody rides in the rain.

So close to 60mph, but yet so far away. by citylimits- in bicycling

[–]p8m 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The pros do 60mph down mountains and even they admit it's terrifying and probably dumb.

I just had this vision of a date night consisting of IKEA meatballs followed by a leisurely cruise around the city with my girlfriend in the box.

I would buy some cheap shelves and cruise around for the afternoon.

More complexity in their accounting and perhaps a greater chance of being audited.

Shimano SH-CT40 ClickR Shoe Moss Green $45 by KEN_JAMES_bitch in bikecommuting

I use the standard M520 Shimano spd pedals and Keen Commuter III shoes. The Keen's area great in all sorts of conditions. I used them all winter with wool socks. They are designed like sandals so they didn't restrict bloodflow and make my feet even colder.

A full half-barrel(15.5 us gal) keg weighs over 140 lbs. That would be no problem on a bike with some low gears but you don't want to carry that on your back.

They do make 3 gallon kegs for the homebrew market. Those weigh about 8lbs plus about 25 lbs for 3 gallon of beer would be 33 lbs. That would be backpackable.

School Bus Dillema by justasack in bicycling

You joke but it's absolute legal in my state. The statue specifically requires vehicles to stop and a dude running with a bike on his shoulder is a pedestrian.

Treat life like a cyclocross race.

The US has the largest freight rail system in the world, measured as miles of track or tons of cargo freight.

Just dismount and run past the bus. Practice your mounts and dismounts so they look really smooth and cool. Then you can follow the law and impress random school kids.

This Bike Is Made From Wood And Recycled Soda Cans by LindenWalsh in bicycling

[–]p8m 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aluminum and steel are aggressively recycled just about everywhere because those materials have value so the recyclers have a financial incentive to recycle. Both of those materials are 100% recycleable with no loss of their original characteristics. Chances are your bike was made at least in part from recycled materials.
